    A tractable DDN-POMDP Approach to Affective Dialogue Modeling for General Probabilistic Frame-based Dialogue Systems

    We propose a new approach to developing a tractable affective dialogue model for general probabilistic frame-based dialogue systems. The dialogue model, based on the Partially Observable Markov Decision Process (POMDP) and the Dynamic Decision Network (DDN) techniques, is composed of two main parts, the slot level dialogue manager and the global dialogue manager. Our implemented dialogue manager prototype can handle hundreds of slots; each slot might have many values. A first evaluation of the slot level dialogue manager (1-slot case) showed that with a 95% confidence level the DDN-POMDP dialogue strategy outperforms three simple handcrafted dialogue strategies when the user's action error is induced by stress

    A POMDP approach to Affective Dialogue Modeling

    We propose a novel approach to developing a dialogue model that is able to take into account some aspects of the user's affective state and to act appropriately. Our dialogue model uses a Partially Observable Markov Decision Process approach with observations composed of the observed user's affective state and action. A simple example of route navigation is explained to clarify our approach. The preliminary results showed that: (1) the expected return of the optimal dialogue strategy depends on the correlation between the user's affective state & the user's action and (2) the POMDP dialogue strategy outperforms five other dialogue strategies (the random, three handcrafted and greedy action selection strategies)

    Presenting in Virtual Worlds: An Architecture for a 3D Anthropomorphic Presenter

    Multiparty-interaction technology is changing entertainment, education, and training. Deployed examples of such technology include embodied agents and robots that act as a museum guide, a news presenter, a teacher, a receptionist, or someone trying to sell you insurance, homes, or tickets. In all these cases, the embodied agent needs to explain and describe. This article describes the design of a 3D virtual presenter that uses different output channels (including speech and animation of posture, pointing, and involuntary movements) to present and explain. The behavior is scripted and synchronized with a 2D display containing associated text and regions (slides, drawings, and paintings) at which the presenter can point.     Attributing northern high-latitude precipitation change over the period 1966–2005 to human influence

    Using an optimal fingerprinting method and improved observations, we compare observed and CMIP5 model simulated annual, cold season and warm season (semi-annual) precipitation over northern high-latitude (north of 50A degrees N) land over 1966-2005. We find that the multi-model simulated responses to the effect of anthropogenic forcing or the effect of anthropogenic and natural forcing combined are consistent with observed changes. We also find that the influence of anthropogenic forcing may be separately detected from that of natural forcings, though the effect of natural forcing cannot be robustly detected. This study confirms our early finding that anthropogenic influence in high-latitude precipitation is detectable. However, in contrast with the previous study, the evidence now indicates that the models do not underestimated observed changes. The difference in the latter aspect is most likely due to improvement in the spatial-temporal coverage of the data used in this study, as well as the details of data processing procedures.111911Ysciescopu
