Environmental monitoring of Mycobacterium bovis in badger feces and badger sett soil by real-time PCR, as confirmed by immunofluorescence, immunocapture, and cultivation
Real-time PCR was used to detect and quantify Mycobacterium bovis cells in
naturally infected soil and badger faeces. Immunomagnetic capture,
immunofluorescence and selective culture confirmed species identification and cell
viability. These techniques will prove useful for monitoring M. bovis in the
environment and for elucidating transmission routes between wildlife and cattle
(Giant) Vortex - (anti) vortex interaction in bulk superconductors: The Ginzburg-Landau theory
The vortex-vortex interaction potential in bulk superconductors is calculated
within the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory and is obtained from a numerical
solution of a set of two coupled non-linear GL differential equations for the
vector potential and the superconducting order parameter, where the merger of
vortices into a giant vortex is allowed. Further, the interaction potentials
between a vortex and a giant vortex and between a vortex and an antivortex are
obtained for both type-I and type-II superconductors. Our numerical results
agree asymptotically with the analytical expressions for large inter-vortex
separations which are available in the literature. We propose new empirical
expressions valid over the full interaction range, which are fitted to our
numerical data for different values of the GL parameter
Electromagnetically induced transparency in superconducting quantum circuits : Effects of decoherence, tunneling and multi-level cross-talk
We explore theoretically electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT) in a
superconducting quantum circuit (SQC). The system is a persistent-current flux
qubit biased in a configuration. Previously [Phys. Rev. Lett. 93,
087003 (2004)], we showed that an ideally-prepared EIT system provides a
sensitive means to probe decoherence. Here, we extend this work by exploring
the effects of imperfect dark-state preparation and specific decoherence
mechanisms (population loss via tunneling, pure dephasing, and incoherent
population exchange). We find an initial, rapid population loss from the
system for an imperfectly prepared dark state. This is followed by a
slower population loss due to both the detuning of the microwave fields from
the EIT resonance and the existing decoherence mechanisms. We find analytic
expressions for the slow loss rate, with coefficients that depend on the
particular decoherence mechanisms, thereby providing a means to probe,
identify, and quantify various sources of decoherence with EIT. We go beyond
the rotating wave approximation to consider how strong microwave fields can
induce additional off-resonant transitions in the SQC, and we show how these
effects can be mitigated by compensation of the resulting AC Stark shifts
An efficient method for scattering problems in open billiards: Theory and applications
We present an efficient method to solve scattering problems in
two-dimensional open billiards with two leads and a complicated scattering
region. The basic idea is to transform the scattering region to a rectangle,
which will lead to complicated dynamics in the interior, but simple boundary
conditions. The method can be specialized to closed billiards, and it allows
the treatment of interacting particles in the billiard. We apply this method to
quantum echoes measured recently in a microwave cavity, and indicate, how it

Movement Of 1970 Year Class Striped Bass Between Virginia, New York And New England
Striped bass (Marone saxatilis) were tagged in Virginia beginning in 1968. The 1970 yearclass of striped bass was tagged both in Virginia and New York in 1972. Fish tagged in Virginia were returned from New York to Maine while fish tagged in New York were returned from the Maryland portion of the Chesapeake Bay and the Potomac River. These data indicated that fish migrate from rivers in which they were spawned at different ages and that fish that migrate as 2 year olds remain together as a group until they are 3+ years. Multifractal analysis of stress time series during ultrathin lubricant film melting
Melting of an ultrathin lubricant film confined between two atomically flat
surfaces is we studied using the rheological model for viscoelastic matter
approximation. Phase diagram with domains, corresponding to sliding, dry, and
two types of friction regimes has been built taking into account
additive noises of stress, strain, and temperature of the lubricant. The stress
time series have been obtained for all regimes of friction using the
Stratonovich interpretation. It has been shown that self-similar regime of
lubricant melting is observed when intensity of temperature noise is much
larger than intensities of strain and stress noises. This regime is defined by
homogenous distribution, at which characteristic stress scale is absent. We
study stress time series obtained for all friction regimes using multifractal
detrended fluctuation analysis. It has been shown that multifractality of these
series is caused by different correlations that are present in the system and
also by a power-law distribution. Since the power-law distribution is related
to small stresses, this case corresponds to self-similar solid-like lubricant.Comment: 22 pages, 10 figures, 41 reference
Travelers’ diarrhea and other gastrointestinal symptoms among Boston-area international travelers
INTRODUCTION: Travelers' diarrhea (TD) and non-TD gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms are common among international travelers. In a study of short-term travelers from Switzerland to developing countries, the most common symptom experienced was severe diarrhea (8.5%) followed by vomiting or abdominal cramps (4%).1 GI illnesses were the most frequently reported diagnoses (34%) among ill-returned travelers to GeoSentinel clinics.2 Of those returning to U.S. GeoSentinel clinics, acute diarrhea (30%) was the most common diagnosis.3 In one cohort of U.S. travelers, 46% reported diarrhea.4 GI illnesses can last from 2 days to weeks or longer,5 disrupting plans during travel or after returning home. Eighty percent of those who experienced diarrhea during travel treated themselves with medication and 6% sought medical care.
METHODS: The Boston Area Travel Medicine Network (BATMN) is a research collaboration of travel clinics in the greater Boston area representing urban-, suburban-, academic-, and university-affiliated facilities. A convenience sample of travelers ≥ 18 years of age attending three BATMN clinics between 2009 and 2011 for pre-travel consultations completed pre-travel surveys, at least one survey weekly during travel, and a post-travel survey 2–4 weeks after return. Travelers were asked to complete a survey at the end of each week of their trip. Institutional review board approvals were obtained at all sites and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and participants provided written informed consent. Information collected included demographic and trip characteristics, vaccines and medications recommended/prescribed before travel, medications taken during travel, dietary practices during travel (consumption of tap water, ice in drinks, unpasteurized dairy products, and salads), symptoms experienced, and impact of illness during and after travel. Vaccinations, prescriptions, and travel health advice given during the pre-travel consultation were recorded by a clinician, and the remainder of the surveys were completed by the traveler. Data were entered into a password-protected database (CS Pro, U.S. Census Bureau, Washington, DC).
RESULTS: We enrolled 987 travelers; 628 (64%) completed all three parts (pre-, during, and post-travel) and were included in the study. Comparison of the 628 to the 359 who did not complete all three parts (noncompleters) revealed no differences, except that completion rates were higher for white travelers than all other racial/ethnic groups (P < 0.001) and for older travelers (median age 47 years versus 32 years in noncompleters, P < 0.001).11 Of those 628 travelers, 208 (33%) experienced TD, 45 (7%) experienced non-TD GI symptoms, 147 (23%) experienced non-GI symptoms, and 228 (36%) did not experience any symptoms during or after travel. Of the 208 with TD, 140 (67%) reported diarrhea as their only symptom, whereas 33 (16%) also experienced nausea/vomiting, 23 (11%) abdominal pain, and 27 (13%) fever (Table 1). Of the 45 who reported non-TD GI symptoms, 21 (47%) experienced nausea/vomiting, 19 (42%) experienced constipation, and 10 (22%) experienced abdominal pain during or after travel (Table 2). Almost all travelers (99%) received advice about food and water precautions and diarrhea management during pre-travel consultation
Distributed Entanglement
Consider three qubits A, B, and C which may be entangled with each other. We
show that there is a trade-off between A's entanglement with B and its
entanglement with C. This relation is expressed in terms of a measure of
entanglement called the "tangle," which is related to the entanglement of
formation. Specifically, we show that the tangle between A and B, plus the
tangle between A and C, cannot be greater than the tangle between A and the
pair BC. This inequality is as strong as it could be, in the sense that for any
values of the tangles satisfying the corresponding equality, one can find a
quantum state consistent with those values. Further exploration of this result
leads to a definition of the "three-way tangle" of the system, which is
