On Expectations-Driven Business Cycles in Economies with Production Externalities: A Comment
Eusepi (2009, International Journal of Economic Theory 5, pp. 9-23) analytically finds that a one-sector real business cycle model may exhibit positive co-movement between consumption and investment when the equilibrium wage-hours locus is positively-sloped and steeper than the household's labor supply curve. However, we show that this condition does not imply expectations-driven business cycles will emerge in Eusepi's model. Specifically, a positive news shock about future productivity improvement leads to an aggregate recession whereby output, employment, consumption and investment all fall in the announcement period.Expectations-Driven Business Cycles; Production Externalities.
Origin and destination attachment: study of cultural integration on Twitter
The cultural integration of immigrants conditions their overall socio-economic integration as well as natives’ attitudes towards globalisation in general and immigration in particular. At the same time, excessive integration—or assimilation—can be detrimental in that it implies forfeiting one’s ties to the origin country and eventually translates into a loss of diversity (from the viewpoint of host countries) and of global connections (from the viewpoint of both host and home countries). Cultural integration can be described using two dimensions: the preservation of links to the origin country and culture, which we call origin attachment, and the creation of new links together with the adoption of cultural traits from the new residence country, which we call destination attachment. In this paper we introduce a means to quantify these two aspects based on Twitter data. We build origin and destination attachment indices and analyse their possible determinants (e.g., language proximity, distance between countries), also in relation to Hofstede’s cultural dimension scores. The results stress the importance of language: a common language between origin and destination countries favours origin attachment, as does low proficiency in the host language. Common geographical borders seem to favour both origin and destination attachment. Regarding cultural dimensions, larger differences among origin and destination countries in terms of Individualism, Masculinity and Uncertainty appear to favour destination attachment and lower origin attachment
Nonlinear transport in NaVO
Transport properties of the charge ordering compound
NaVO are studied in the temperature range from 30 K to
300 K using current driven DC conductivity experiments. It is found that below
the metal-insulator transition temperature (T = 136 K) this material
shows a typical nonlinear charge density wave behavior. The observed
conductivity is discussed in terms of a classical domain model for charge
density wave transport.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures, final versio
Quantitative spectroscopy of single molecule interaction times
Funding Information: Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (421152132 (subproject C03)), EXC 2046 (MATH+Incubator project IN-B2).Single molecule fluorescence tracking provides information at nanometer-scale and millisecond-temporal resolution about the dynamics and interaction of individual molecules in a biological environment. While the dynamic behavior of isolated molecules can be characterized well, the quantitative insight is more limited when interactions between two indistinguishable molecules occur. We address this aspect by developing a theoretical foundation for a spectroscopy of interaction times, i.e., the inference of interaction from imaging data. A non-trivial crossover between a power law to an exponential behavior of the distribution of the interaction times is highlighted, together with the dependence of the exponential term upon the microscopic reaction affinity. Our approach is validated with simulated and experimental datasets.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
Coherent amplitudon generation in K_0.3MoO_3 through ultrafast inter-band quasi particle decay
The charge density wave system K_0.3MoO_3 has been studied using variable
energy pump-probe spectroscopy, ellipsometry, and inelastic light scattering.
The observed transient reflectivity response exhibits quite a complex behavior,
containing contributions due to quasi particle excitations, coherent
amplitudons and phonons, and heating effects. The generation of coherent
amplitudons is discussed in terms of relaxation of photo-excited quasi
particles, and is found to be resonant with the interband plasmon frequency.
Two additional coherent excitations observed in the transients are assigned to
zone-folding modes of the charge density wave state

Cooperative underwater acoustic communications
This article presents a contemporary overview of underwater acoustic communication (UWAC) and investigates physical layer aspects on cooperative transmission techniques for future UWAC systems. Taking advantage of the broadcast nature of wireless transmission, cooperative communication realizes spatial diversity advantages in a distributed manner. The current literature on cooperative communication focuses on terrestrial wireless systems at radio frequencies with sporadic results on cooperative UWAC. In this article, we summarize initial results on cooperative UWAC and investigate the performance of a multicarrier cooperative UWAC considering the inherent unique characteristics of the underwater channel. Our simulation results demonstrate the superiority of cooperative UWAC systems over their point-to-point counterparts. © 1979-2012 IEEE
