Anisotrope Materialmodellierung für den menschlichen Unterkiefer
Im Rahmen der biomechanischen Simulation knöcherner menschlicher Organe ist die Frage nach einer befriedigenden Materialbeschreibung nach wie vor ungelöst. Computertomographische Datensätze liefern eine räumliche Verteilung der (Röntgen-) Dichte und ermöglichen damit eine gute Darstellung der individuellen Geometrie. Weiter können die verschiedenen Materialbestandteile des Knochens, Spongiosa und Kortikalis, voneinander getrennt werden. Aber die richtungsabhängige Information der Materialanisotropie ist verloren.
In dieser Arbeit wird ein Ansatz für eine anisotrope Materialbeschreibung vorgestellt, die es ermöglicht, den Einfluss der individuellen knöchernen Struktur auf das makroskopische Materialverhalten abzuschätzen
Measurement of the Casimir force between parallel metallic surfaces
We report on the measurement of the Casimir force between conducting surfaces
in a parallel configuration. The force is exerted between a silicon cantilever
coated with chromium and a similar rigid surface and is detected looking at the
shifts induced in the cantilever frequency when the latter is approached. The
scaling of the force with the distance between the surfaces was tested in the
0.5 - 3.0 m range, and the related force coefficient was determined at the
15% precision level.Comment: 4 Figure
Nonlinearity in nanomechanical cantilevers
Euler-Bernoulli beam theory is widely used to successfully predict the linear dynamics of micro- and nanocantilever beams. However, its capacity to characterize the nonlinear dynamics of these devices has not yet been rigorously assessed, despite its use in nanoelectromechanical systems development. In this article, we report the first highly controlled measurements of the nonlinear response of nanomechanical cantilevers using an ultralinear detection system. This is performed for an extensive range of devices to probe the validity of Euler-Bernoulli theory in the nonlinear regime. We find that its predictions deviate strongly from our measurements for the nonlinearity of the fundamental flexural mode, which show a systematic dependence on aspect ratio (length/width) together with random scatter. This contrasts with the second mode, which is always found to be in good agreement with theory. These findings underscore the delicate balance between inertial and geometric nonlinear effects in the fundamental mode, and strongly motivate further work to develop theories beyond the Euler-Bernoulli approximation
Daptomycin antimicrobial activity tested against methicillin-resistant staphylococci and vancomycin-resistant enterococci isolated in European medical centers (2005)
BACKGROUND: Daptomycin is a cyclic lipopeptide with potent activity and broad spectrum against Gram-positive bacteria currently used for the treatment of complicated skin and skin structure infections and bacteremia, including right sided endocarditis. We evaluated the in vitro activity of this compound and selected comparator agents tested against clinical strains of staphylococci and enterococci collected in European medical centers in 2005. METHODS: A total of 4,640 strains from 23 medical centers located in 10 European countries, Turkey and Israel (SENTRY Program platform) were tested for susceptibility by reference broth microdilution methods according to Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines and interpretative criteria. Mueller-Hinton broth was supplemented to 50 mg/L Ca(++ )for testing daptomycin. Results for oxacillin (methicillin)-resistant staphylococci and vancomycin-resistant enterococci were analyzed separately. RESULTS: Oxacillin resistance rates among Staphylococcus aureus varied from 2.1% in Sweden to 42.5% in the United Kingdom (UK) and 54.7% in Ireland (29.1% overall), while vancomycin resistance rates varied from 0.0% in France, Sweden and Switzerland to 66.7% in the UK and 71.4% in Ireland among Enterococcus faecium (17.9% overall). All S. aureus strains were inhibited at daptomycin MIC of 1 mg/L (MIC(50/90), 0.25/0.5 mg/L; 100.0% susceptible) and only one coagulase-negative staphylococci strain (0.1%) showed an elevated (>1 mg/L) daptomycin MIC value (4 mg/L). Among E. faecalis (MIC(50/90), 0.5/1 mg/L; 100% susceptible) the highest daptomycin MIC value was 2 mg/L; while among E. faecium (MIC(50/90), 2/4 mg/L; 100% susceptible) the highest MIC result was 4 mg/L. CONCLUSION: Daptomycin showed excellent in vitro activity against staphylococci and enterococci collected in European medical centers in 2005 and resistance to oxacillin, vancomycin or quinupristin/dalfopristin did not compromise its activity overall against these pathogens. Based on these results and those of previous publications, daptomycin appears to be an excellent therapeutic option for serious infections caused by oxacillin-resistant staphylococci and vancomycin-resistant enterococci in Europe
Interaction imaging with amplitude-dependence force spectroscopy
Knowledge of surface forces is the key to understanding a large number of
processes in fields ranging from physics to material science and biology. The
most common method to study surfaces is dynamic atomic force microscopy (AFM).
Dynamic AFM has been enormously successful in imaging surface topography, even
to atomic resolution, but the force between the AFM tip and the surface remains
unknown during imaging. Here, we present a new approach that combines high
accuracy force measurements and high resolution scanning. The method, called
amplitude-dependence force spectroscopy (ADFS) is based on the
amplitude-dependence of the cantilever's response near resonance and allows for
separate determination of both conservative and dissipative tip-surface
interactions. We use ADFS to quantitatively study and map the nano-mechanical
interaction between the AFM tip and heterogeneous polymer surfaces. ADFS is
compatible with commercial atomic force microscopes and we anticipate its
wide-spread use in taking AFM toward quantitative microscopy
Like-charge attraction through hydrodynamic interaction
We demonstrate that the attractive interaction measured between like-charged
colloidal spheres near a wall can be accounted for by a nonequilibrium
hydrodynamic effect. We present both analytical results and Brownian dynamics
simulations which quantitatively capture the one-wall experiments of Larsen and
Grier (Nature 385, p. 230, 1997).Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure
Comprehensive characterization of molecular interactions based on nanomechanics
Molecular interaction is a key concept in our understanding of the biological mechanisms of life. Two physical properties change when one molecular partner binds to another. Firstly, the masses combine and secondly, the structure of at least one binding partner is altered, mechanically transducing the binding into subsequent biological reactions. Here we present a nanomechanical micro-array technique for bio-medical research, which not only monitors the binding of effector molecules to their target but also the subsequent effect on a biological system in vitro. This label-free and real-time method directly and simultaneously tracks mass and nanomechanical changes at the sensor interface using micro-cantilever technology. To prove the concept we measured lipid vesicle (approximately 748*10(6) Da) adsorption on the sensor interface followed by subsequent binding of the bee venom peptide melittin (2840 Da) to the vesicles. The results show the high dynamic range of the instrument and that measuring the mass and structural changes simultaneously allow a comprehensive discussion of molecular interactions
Counterion Condensation and Fluctuation-Induced Attraction
We consider an overall neutral system consisting of two similarly charged
plates and their oppositely charged counterions and analyze the electrostatic
interaction between the two surfaces beyond the mean-field Poisson-Boltzmann
approximation. Our physical picture is based on the fluctuation-driven
counterion condensation model, in which a fraction of the counterions is
allowed to ``condense'' onto the charged plates. In addition, an expression for
the pressure is derived, which includes fluctuation contributions of the whole
system. We find that for sufficiently high surface charges, the distance at
which the attraction, arising from charge fluctuations, starts to dominate can
be large compared to the Gouy-Chapmann length. We also demonstrate that
depending on the valency, the system may exhibit a novel first-order binding

O presente Relatório da Prática de Ensino Supervisionada apresenta todas as atividades desenvolvidas no Conservatório de Música do Porto durante o ano letivo 2019/2020, no âmbito do Mestrado em Ensino da Música da Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espetáculo do Porto.
Inicialmente é apresentada uma caracterização da instituição onde foi realizado o estágio, fazendo uma contextualização histórica e organizacional, segundo os seus documentos estruturantes.
No segundo capÃtulo é apresentado todo o processo da prática educativa, contemplando a sua organização, observações e planificações das aulas no decorrer do ano letivo.
Por fim, no terceiro capÃtulo, é apresentado o Projeto de Intervenção, o qual teve como objetivo estudar a aplicação do canto como estratégia de aprendizagem. É apresentado todo o processo realizado com 16 alunos, análise e discussão dos resultados obtidos e as reflexões finais.This Supervised Teaching Practice Report presents all the activities developed at the Conservatório de Música do Porto during the academic year 2019/2020, within the scope of the Master in Music Teaching at the Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espetáculo at Porto.
Initially, a characterization of the institution where the internship took place is presented, providing its historical and organizational contextualization, according to its structuring documents.
In the second chapter, the entire educational practice process is presented, contemplating its organization, observations and lesson plans during the academic year.
Finally, in the third chapter, the Intervention Project is presented, which aimed to study the application of singing as a learning strategy.
The entire process carried out with 16 students is presented with analysis and discussion of the results obtained and the final reflections
