Comparative studies of lunar, Martian, and Mercurian craters and plains
The spatial distribution of lunar smooth plains is not consistent with experimental simulations of melt rock emplacement during cratering in layered materials. Nor is it consistent with the location of melt rocks (suevite) near the Ries basin. Lunar smooth plains surrounding Imbrium are most extensive in areas where pre-existing craters are most degraded. This observation suggests that plains form by impact of basin and local primary crater ejecta, together with deposition of debris excavated by the resultant secondary cratering events. Craters within the belt of smooth plains surrounding the Caloris basin on Mercury are most degraded nearest the basin; this suggests that Mercurian smooth plains must, at least in part, be emplaced in a manner similar to plains surrounding the Imbrium basin. Mercurian uplands have a primary crater population deficient in small crater diameters (less than approximately 30 km). Lunar uplands far from major basins also have a crater population deficient in small crater sizes. Martian cratered terrain exhibits a similar crater deficiency, which was previously interpreted as due to obliteration of small craters (less than approximately 30 km) by some surface process. A crater size distribution deficient in small sizes (less than approximately 30 km) on the Mercurian, lunar, and Martian uplands has implications for the origin of debris bombarding the inner solar system during the period recorded by these surfaces. It is proposed that during late heavy bombardment, the inner solar system was inundated with bodies that broke up under tidal fission as they approached the planets. Such a mechanism would lend to production of a crater population deficient in small crater sizes, and it would also explain the large degree of spatial clustering of primary craters on Mercury, the moon, and Mars

Size versus truthfulness in the house allocation problem
We study the House Allocation problem (also known as the Assignment problem), i.e., the problem of allocating a set of objects among a set of agents, where each agent has ordinal preferences (possibly involving ties) over a subset of the objects. We focus on truthful mechanisms without monetary transfers for finding large Pareto optimal matchings. It is straightforward to show that no deterministic truthful mechanism can approximate a maximum cardinality Pareto optimal matching with ratio better than 2. We thus consider randomized mechanisms. We give a natural and explicit extension of the classical Random Serial Dictatorship Mechanism (RSDM) specifically for the House Allocation problem where preference lists can include ties. We thus obtain a universally truthful randomized mechanism for finding a Pareto optimal matching and show that it achieves an approximation ratio of eovere-1. The same bound holds even when agents have priorities (weights) and our goal is to find a maximum weight (as opposed to maximum cardinality) Pareto optimal matching. On the other hand we give a lower bound of 18 over 13 on the approximation ratio of any universally truthful Pareto optimal mechanism in settings with strict preferences. In the case that the mechanism must additionally be non-bossy, an improved lower bound of eovere-1 holds. This lower bound is tight given that RSDM for strict preference lists is non-bossy. We moreover interpret our problem in terms of the classical secretary problem and prove that our mechanism provides the best randomized strategy of the administrator who interviews the applicants

Experimental Signatures of Anomaly Induced DCC Formation
We discuss characteristic experimental signatures related to the formation of
domains of disoriented chiral condensate (DCC) triggered by the axial anomaly
in relativistic heavy ion collisions. We predict that the enhancement of the
fraction of neutral pions compared to all pions depends on the angle of
emission with respect to the scattering plane and is concentrated at small
transverse momentum and small rapidity in the center-of-mass frame. The
anisotropy with respect to the reaction plane is also observable in the

Negative Interactions in Irreversible Self-Assembly
This paper explores the use of negative (i.e., repulsive) interaction the
abstract Tile Assembly Model defined by Winfree. Winfree postulated negative
interactions to be physically plausible in his Ph.D. thesis, and Reif, Sahu,
and Yin explored their power in the context of reversible attachment
operations. We explore the power of negative interactions with irreversible
attachments, and we achieve two main results. Our first result is an
impossibility theorem: after t steps of assembly, Omega(t) tiles will be
forever bound to an assembly, unable to detach. Thus negative glue strengths do
not afford unlimited power to reuse tiles. Our second result is a positive one:
we construct a set of tiles that can simulate a Turing machine with space bound
s and time bound t, while ensuring that no intermediate assembly grows larger
than O(s), rather than O(s * t) as required by the standard Turing machine
simulation with tiles
Electron Impact Excitation Cross Sections for Hydrogen-Like Ions
We present cross sections for electron-impact-induced transitions n --> n' in
hydrogen-like ions C 5+, Ne 9+, Al 12+, and Ar 17+. The cross sections are
computed by Coulomb-Born with exchange and normalization (CBE) method for all
transitions with n < n' < 7 and by convergent close-coupling (CCC) method for
transitions with n 2s and 1s
--> 2p are presented as well. The CCC and CBE cross sections agree to better
than 10% with each other and with earlier close-coupling results (available for
transition 1 --> 2 only). Analytical expression for n --> n' cross sections and

Annealing of defects in Fe after MeV Heavy ion irradiation
We report study of recovery dynamics, followed by in-situ resistivity
measurement after 100 MeV oxygen ion irradiation, in cold rolled Fe at 300K.
Scaling behavior with microstructural density and temperature of sample have
been used to establish stress induced defects formed during irradiation as a
new type of sink. The dynamics after irradiation has been shown to be due to
migration of defects to two types of sinks i.e. stress induced defect as
variable sinks and internal surfaces as fixed sinks. Experimental data obtained
under various experimental conditions have been fitted to theoretical curves.
Parameters thus obtained from fitting are employed to establish effect of
electronic energy loss and temperature on recovery dynamics and stress

Effect of Finite Granularity of Detectors on Anisotropy Coefficients
The coefficients that describe the anisotropy in the azimuthal distribution
of particles are lower when the particles are recorded in a detector with
finite granularity and measures only hits. This arises due to loss of
information because of multiple hits in any channel. The magnitude of this loss
of signal depends both on the occupancy and on the value of the coefficient.
These correction factors are obtained for analysis methods differing in detail,
