Antimatter from supersymmetric dark matter
We propose low-energy antideuterons in cosmic rays as a new possible
signature for indirect detection of supersymmetric dark matter.
Since the energy spectrum of the antiproton secondary component is still
spoilt by considerable theoretical uncertainties, looking for low-energy
antideuterons seems a plausible alternative.
We apply our calculation to the AMS experiment, when mounted on the
International Spatial Station. If a few low-energy antideuterons will be
discovered by AMS, this should be seriously taken as a clue for the existence
of relic, massive neutralinos in the dark halo of our Galaxy.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures, Talk presented at the 4th International Symposium

Genomic relatedness within five common Finnish Campylobacter jejuni pulsed-field gel electrophoresis genotypes studied by amplified fragment length polymorphism analysis, ribotyping and serotyping
Thirty-five Finnish Campylobacter jejuni strains with five SmaI/SacII pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) genotypes selected among human and chicken isolates from 1997 and 1998 were used for comparison of their PFGE patterns, amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) patterns, HaeIII ribotypes, and heat-stable (HS) serotypes. The discriminatory power of PFGE, AFLP, and ribotyping with HaeIII were shown to be at the same level for this selected set of strains, and these methods assigned the strains into the same groups. The PFGE and AFLP patterns within a genotype were highly similar, indicating genetic relatedness. The same HS serotypes were distributed among different genotypes, and different serotypes were identified within one genotype. HS serotype 12 was only associated with the combined genotype G1 (PFGE-AFLP-ribotype). These studies using polyphasic genotyping methods suggested that common Finnish C. jejuni genotypes form genetic lineages which colonize both humans and chickens
Simulation of neutrino and charged particle production and propagation in the atmosphere
A precise evaluation of the secondary particle production and propagation in
the atmosphere is very important for the atmospheric neutrino oscillation
studies. The issue is addressed with the extension of a previously developed
full 3-Dimensional Monte-Carlo simulation of particle generation and transport
in the atmosphere, to compute the flux of secondary protons, muons and
neutrinos. Recent balloon borne experiments have performed a set of accurate
flux measurements for different particle species at different altitudes in the
atmosphere, which can be used to test the calculations for the atmospheric
neutrino production, and constrain the underlying hadronic models. The
simulation results are reported and compared with the latest flux measurements.
It is shown that the level of precision reached by these experiments could be
used to constrain the nuclear models used in the simulation. The implication of
these results for the atmospheric neutrino flux calculation are discussed.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figure
Low-lying bifurcations in cavity quantum electrodynamics
The interplay of quantum fluctuations with nonlinear dynamics is a central
topic in the study of open quantum systems, connected to fundamental issues
(such as decoherence and the quantum-classical transition) and practical
applications (such as coherent information processing and the development of
mesoscopic sensors/amplifiers). With this context in mind, we here present a
computational study of some elementary bifurcations that occur in a driven and
damped cavity quantum electrodynamics (cavity QED) model at low intracavity
photon number. In particular, we utilize the single-atom cavity QED Master
Equation and associated Stochastic Schrodinger Equations to characterize the
equilibrium distribution and dynamical behavior of the quantized intracavity
optical field in parameter regimes near points in the semiclassical
(mean-field, Maxwell-Bloch) bifurcation set. Our numerical results show that
the semiclassical limit sets are qualitatively preserved in the quantum
stationary states, although quantum fluctuations apparently induce phase
diffusion within periodic orbits and stochastic transitions between attractors.
We restrict our attention to an experimentally realistic parameter regime.Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, submitted to PR
Zero Field precession and hysteretic threshold currents in spin torque oscillators with tilted polarizer
Using non-linear system theory and numerical simulations we map out the
static and dynamic phase diagram in zero applied field of a spin torque
oscillator with a tilted polarizer (TP-STO).We find that for sufficiently large
currents, even very small tilt angles (beta>1 degree) will lead to steady free
layer precession in zero field. Within a rather large range of tilt angles, 1
degree< beta <19 degree, we find coexisting static states and hysteretic
switching between these using only current. In a more narrow window (1
degree<beta<5 degree) one of the static states turns into a limit cycle
(precession). The coexistence of static and dynamic states in zero magnetic
field is unique to the tilted polarizer and leads to large hysteresis in the
upper and lower threshold currents for TP-STO operation.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Using the theory of planned behavior to predict gambling behavior
Gambling is an important public health concern. To better understand gambling behavior, we conducted a classroom-based survey that assessed the role of the theory of planned behavior (TPB; i.e., intentions, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and attitudes) in past year gambling and gambling frequency among college students. Results from this research support the utility of the TPB to explain gambling behavior in this population. Specifically, in TPB models to predict gambling behavior, friend and family subjective norms and perceived behavioral control predicted past year gambling and friend and family subjective norms, attitudes and perceived behavioral control predicted gambling frequency. Intention to gamble mediated these relationships. These findings suggest that college responsible gambling efforts should consider targeting misperceptions of approval regarding gambling behavior (i.e., subjective norms), personal approval of gambling behavior (i.e., attitudes), and perceived behavioral control to better manage gambling behavior in various situations
Localizing limit cycles : from numeric to analytical results
Presentation given by participants of the joint international multidisciplinary workshop MURPHYS-HSFS-2016 (MUltiRate Processes and HYSteresis; Hysteresis and Slow-Fast Systems), which was dedicated to the mathematical theory and applications of multiple scale systems and systems with hysteresis, and held at the Centre de Recerca Matemà tica (CRM) in Barcelona from June 13th to 17th, 2016This note presents the results of [4]. It deals with the problem of location and existence of limit cycles for real planar polynomial differential systems. We provide a method to construct Poincaré-Bendixson regions by using transversal curves, that enables us to prove the existence of a limit cycle that has been numerically detected. We apply our results to several known systems, like the Brusselator one or some Liénard systems, to prove the existence of the limit cycles and to locate them very precisely in the phase space. Our method, combined with some other classical tools can be applied to obtain sharp bounds for the bifurcation values of a saddle-node bifurcation of limit cycles, as we do for the Rychkov syste
INFLUENCE OF HEAT TREATMENT ON THE MICROSTRUCTURE AND TOUGHNESS OF BĂ–HLER M333 ISOPLAST STEEL
In this work the through hardenability and the influence of the heat treatment parameters (austenitizingtemperature, cooling parameter ? and tempering temperature) on the microstructure and the achievabletoughness level of Böhler M333 ISOPLAST are investigated. The results are compared to the standardizedtool steel grade DIN 1.2083. The investigations showed that the cooling parameter ? has a strong influenceon the impact toughness of M333 ISOPLAST plastic mould steel. The toughness is reduced by pro-eutectoidprecipitates and not by a lack of through hardenability. Furthermore, it was found out that depending on thecross section of the moulds appropriate heat treatments lead to a good combination of hardness and toughness
An asymptotic formula for marginal running coupling constants and universality of loglog corrections
Given a two-loop beta function for multiple marginal coupling constants, we
derive an asymptotic formula for the running coupling constants driven to an
infrared fixed point. It can play an important role in universal loglog
corrections to physical quantities.Comment: 16 pages; typos fixed, one appendix removed for quick access to the

Morse index and causal continuity. A criterion for topology change in quantum gravity
Studies in 1+1 dimensions suggest that causally discontinuous topology
changing spacetimes are suppressed in quantum gravity. Borde and Sorkin have
conjectured that causal discontinuities are associated precisely with index 1
or n-1 Morse points in topology changing spacetimes built from Morse functions.
We establish a weaker form of this conjecture. Namely, if a Morse function f on
a compact cobordism has critical points of index 1 or n-1, then all the Morse
geometries associated with f are causally discontinuous, while if f has no
critical points of index 1 or n-1, then there exist associated Morse geometries
which are causally continuous.Comment: Latex, 20 pages, 3 figure
