    Gauge Invariant Cutoff QED

    A hidden generalized gauge symmetry of a cutoff QED is used to show the renormalizability of QED. In particular, it is shown that corresponding Ward identities are valid all along the renormalization group flow. The exact Renormalization Group flow equation corresponding to the effective action of a cutoff lambda phi^4 theory is also derived.     The Ah receptor: adaptive metabolism, ligand diversity, and the xenokine model

Yet, we still have many important questions about its role in normal physiology and development. Moreover, we still do not fully understand how this protein mediates the adverse effects of a variety of environmental pollutants, such as the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), the chlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (“dioxins”), and many polyhalogenated biphenyls. To provide a platform for future research, we provide the historical underpinnings of our current state of knowledge about AHR signal transduction, identify a few areas of needed research, and then develop concepts such as adaptive metabolism, ligand structural diversity, and the importance of proligands in receptor activation. We finish with a discussion of the cognate physiological role of the AHR, our perspective on why this receptor is so highly conserved, and how we might think about its cognate ligands in the future.This review is dedicated in memory of the career of Alan Poland, one of the truly great minds in pharmacology and toxicology.     First-principles study of the optoelectronic properties and photovoltaic absorber layer efficiency of Cu-based chalcogenides

    Cu-based chalcogenides are promising materials for thin-film solar cells with more than 20% measured cell efficiency. Using first-principles calculations based on density functional theory, the optoelectronic properties of a group of Cu-based chalcogenides Cu2_2-II-IV-VI4_4 is studied. They are then screened with the aim of identifying potential absorber materials for photovoltaic applications. The spectroscopic limited maximum efficiency (SLME) introduced by Yu and Zunger is used as a metric for the screening. After constructing the current-voltage curve, the maximum spectroscopy dependent power conversion efficiency is calculated from the maximum power output. The role of the nature of the band gap, direct or indirect, and also of the absorptivity of the studied materials on the maximum theoretical power conversion efficiency is studied. Our results show that Cu2_2-II-GeSe4_4 with II=Cd and Hg, and Cu2_2-II-SnS4_4 with II=Cd and Zn have a higher theoretical efficiency compared to the materials currently used as absorber layer

    Bone mineral content after renal transplantation

    Forearm bone mineral content (BMC), as evaluated by photonabsorption densitometry, was measured in 28 cadaver kidney donor recipients who entered the study 8 weeks postoperatively and were followed up for 18 months. BMC decreased signifiantly (p<0.05) but marginally in placebo-treated patients (n=14) (initial BMC 1.09±0.25 g/cm; final BMC 1.05±0.24). Fourteen patients were prophylactically given 1,25(OH)2vitamin D3 in a dose which avoided hypercalcemia and hypercalciuria (sim0.25 µg/day); under 1,25(OH)2 vitamin D3 prophylaxis a significant decrease of forearm BMC was observed no longer (initial BMC 0.94±0.21 g/cm; final BMC 0.95±0.21), but the difference between placebo and 1,25(OH)2 vitamin D3 narrowly missed statistical significance (p=0.066). It is concluded that the decrease of forearm BMC is negligible in transplant recipients with low steroid regimens. The data suggest a trend for prophylaxis with 1,25(OH)2 vitamin D3 to slightly ameliorate forearm (cortical) BMC loss

    Restricted random walk model as a new testing ground for the applicability of q-statistics

    We present exact results obtained from Master Equations for the probability function P(y,T) of sums y=t=1Txty=\sum_{t=1}^T x_t of the positions x_t of a discrete random walker restricted to the set of integers between -L and L. We study the asymptotic properties for large values of L and T. For a set of position dependent transition probabilities the functional form of P(y,T) is with very high precision represented by q-Gaussians when T assumes a certain value TL2T^*\propto L^2. The domain of y values for which the q-Gaussian apply diverges with L. The fit to a q-Gaussian remains of very high quality even when the exponent aa of the transition probability g(x)=|x/L|^a+p with 0<p<<1 is different from 1, all though weak, but essential, deviation from the q-Gaussian does occur for a1a\neq1. To assess the role of correlations we compare the T dependence of P(y,T) for the restricted random walker case with the equivalent dependence for a sum y of uncorrelated variables x each distributed according to 1/g(x).Comment: 5 pages, 7 figs, EPL (2011), in pres

    \Lambda-buildings and base change functors

    We prove an analog of the base change functor of \Lambda-trees in the setting of generalized affine buildings. The proof is mainly based on local and global combinatorics of the associated spherical buildings. As an application we obtain that the class of generalized affine building is closed under ultracones and asymptotic cones.     Calcite distribution and orientation in the tergite exocuticle of the isopods porcellio scaber and armadillidium vulgare (Oniscidea, Crustacea) - A combined FE-SEM, polarized SCm-RSI and EBSD study

    The crustacean cuticle is a bio-composite consisting of hierarchically organized chitin-protein fibres, reinforced with calcite, amorphous calcium carbonate and phosphates. Comparative studies revealed that the structure and composition of tergite cuticle of terrestrial isopods is adapted to the habitat of the animals, and to their behavioural patterns to avoid predation. In this contribution we use FE-SEM, polarized SCm-RSI and EBSD to investigate micro- and nano-patterns of mineral phase distribution and crystal orientation within the tergite cuticle of the two terrestrial isopod species Armadillidium vulgare and Porcellio scaber. The results show that the proximal regions of the exocuticle contain both calcite and ACC, with ACC located within the pore canals. Calcite forms hierarchically organised mesocrystalline aggregates of similar crystallographic orientation. Surprisingly, c-axis orientation preference is horizontal in regard to the local cuticle surface for both species, in contrast to mollusc and brachiopod shell structures in which the c-axis is always perpendicular to the shell surface. The overall sharpness of calcite crystal orientation is weak compared to that of mollusc shells. However, there are considerable differences in texture sharpness between the two isopod species. In the thick cuticle of the slow-walking A. vulgare calcite is more randomly oriented resulting in more isotropic mechanical properties of the cuticle. In contrast, the rather thin and more flexible cuticle of the fast- running P. scaber texture sharpness is stronger with a preference of c-axis orientation being parallel to the bilateral symmetry-plane of the animal, leading to more anisotropic mechanical properties of the cuticle. These differences may represent adaptations to different external and/or internal mechanical loads the cuticle has to resist during predatory attempts

    The GREGOR Fabry-P\'erot Interferometer

    The GREGOR Fabry-P\'erot Interferometer (GFPI) is one of three first-light instruments of the German 1.5-meter GREGOR solar telescope at the Observatorio del Teide, Tenerife, Spain. The GFPI uses two tunable etalons in collimated mounting. Thanks to its large-format, high-cadence CCD detectors with sophisticated computer hard- and software it is capable of scanning spectral lines with a cadence that is sufficient to capture the dynamic evolution of the solar atmosphere. The field-of-view (FOV) of 50" x 38" is well suited for quiet Sun and sunspot observations. However, in the vector spectropolarimetric mode the FOV reduces to 25" x 38". The spectral coverage in the spectroscopic mode extends from 530-860 nm with a theoretical spectral resolution R of about 250,000, whereas in the vector spectropolarimetric mode the wavelength range is at present limited to 580-660 nm. The combination of fast narrow-band imaging and post-factum image restoration has the potential for discovery science concerning the dynamic Sun and its magnetic field at spatial scales down to about 50 km on the solar surface.Comment: 14 pages, 17 figures, 4 tables; pre-print of AN 333, p.880-893, 2012 (AN special issue to GREGOR
