    This study attempts to examine and the analyze the process of gentrification amongst identified LGBTQ+ spaces in Louisville, Kentucky from 1980 to present day using both production-side and consumption-side methods derived from property values and census data, respectively. Using these data, I trace the development of these spaces and determine what relationship to gentrification they may have. I then compare production-side data with consumption-side data to determine disparities amongst class in potential LGBTQ+ bar patrons in Louisville, Kentucky

    Several fast algorithms for the determination of the linear complexity of dd-periodic sequences over a finite field \F_q, i.e. sequences with characteristic polynomial f(x)=xd1f(x) = x^d-1, have been proposed in the literature. In this contribution fast algorithms for determining the linear complexity of binary sequences with characteristic polynomial f(x)=(x1)df(x) = (x-1)^d for an arbitrary positive integer dd, and f(x)=(x2+x+1)2vf(x) = (x^2+x+1)^{2^v} are presented. The result is then utilized to establish a fast algorithm for determining the kk-error linear complexity of binary sequences with characteristic polynomial (x2+x+1)2v(x^2+x+1)^{2^v}

    We report the first calculations of mode patterns of unstable-cavity lasers with truly two-dimensional transverse geometries. A detailed account of numerical techniques, incorporating a nonorthogonal beam-propagation method, and results for cavities with a range of transverse symmetries, such as regular polygonal and rhomboid, are presented. In view of the beautiful complexity of the eigenmodes predicted, a novel kaleidoscope laser is proposed

    On the rules for aquatic locomotion

    We present unifying rules governing the efficient locomotion of swimming fish and marine mammals. Using scaling and dimensional analysis, supported by new experimental data, we show that efficient locomotion occurs when the values of the Strouhal (St) number St(=f A/U) and A∗(=A/L), two nondimensional numbers that relate forward speed U, tail-beat amplitude A, tail-beat frequency f , and the length of the swimmer L are bound to the tight ranges of 0.2–0.4 and 0.1–0.3, respectively. The tight range of 0.2–0.4 for the St number has previously been associated with optimal thrust generation. We show that the St number alone is insufficient to achieve optimal aquatic locomotion, and an additional condition on A∗ is needed. More importantly, we show that when swimming at minimal power consumption, the Strouhal number of a cruising swimmer is predetermined solely by the shape and drag characteristics of the swimmer. We show that diverse species of fish and cetaceans cruise indeed with the St number and A∗ predicted by our theory. Our findings provide a physical explanation as to why fast aquatic swimmers cruise with a relatively constant tail-beat amplitude of approximately 20% of the body length, and their swimming speed is nearly proportional to their tail-beat frequenc

    The impact of marketisation on postgraduate career preparedness in a high skills economy

    This study focuses on the consequences for high skills development of the erosion of the once clear demarcation between higher education and business. It contributes to the broader debate about the relevance of higher education for thewell-being of the society of the future. The research explores the effects of marketisation on the postgraduate curriculum and students’ preparedness for careers in public relations and marketing communications. Interviews with lecturers and students in two universities in the UK and Australia indicate that a tension exists between academic rigour and corporate relevancy. The consequences are a diminution of academic attachment to critique and wider social/cultural engagement, with a resulting impoverishment of students’ creative abilities and critical consciences. Subsequently, graduates of public relations and marketing communications, and to some extent those from other profession-related disciplines, are insufficiently prepared for careers as knowledge workers in a future high-skills economy

    Adherence to Antihypertensive Drugs Assessed by Hyphenated High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry Analysis of Oral Fluids

    Background It is currently unknown if antihypertensive drugs can be monitored in oral fluid (OF) using liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry. Methods and Results We assessed adherence using liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry in OF, plasma, and urine of 56 consecutive patients with hypertension referred to a tertiary hypertension unit. Of these patients, 59% were completely adherent (all drugs detectable in urine), whereas 29% and 13% were partially adherent (1 drug not detectable in urine) or nonadherent (>1 drug not detectable in urine), respectively. Adherent patients were on fewer antihypertensive drugs (P=0.001), had fewer daily drug doses (P=0.012), and had lower 24-hour ambulatory systolic (P=0.012) and diastolic (P=0.009) blood pressures than nonadherent or partially adherent patients. Most drugs were detected in urine compared with plasma and OF (181 versus 119 versus 88; P=0.001). Compared with urine and plasma, detection rates of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, angiotensin II receptor blockers, and diuretics were lower in OF. There was no difference in the frequency of detecting β blockers (P=1.0) and calcium channel blockers (P=0.063) when comparing OF with urine. There was no difference in the number of calcium channel blockers (P=0.727), β blockers (P=1.000), thiazide diuretics (P=0.125), and α-2 agonists (P=0.125) identified between OF and plasma. Conclusions This study shows the feasibility of drug adherence testing for several antihypertensive drugs, especially those without acidic components, in OF, with a similar recovery compared with plasma. Therefore, drug adherence testing in OF should be further explored as a noninvasive approach, which can easily be performed in an "out-of-office" setting

    Speciation through the lens of biomechanics: locomotion, prey capture and reproductive isolation

    Speciation is a multifaceted process that involves numerous aspects of the biological sciences and occurs for multiple reasons. Ecology plays a major role, including both abiotic and biotic factors. Whether populations experience similar or divergent ecological environments, they often adapt to local conditions through divergence in biomechanical traits. We investigate the role of biomechanics in speciation using fish predator–prey interactions, a primary driver of fitness for both predators and prey. We highlight specific groups of fishes, or specific species, that have been particularly valuable for understanding these dynamic interactions and offer the best opportunities for future studies that link genetic architecture to biomechanics and reproductive isolation (RI). In addition to emphasizing the key biomechanical techniques that will be instrumental, we also propose that the movement towards linking biomechanics and speciation will include (i) establishing the genetic basis of biomechanical traits, (ii) testing whether similar and divergent selection lead to biomechanical divergence, and (iii) testing whether/how biomechanical traits affect RI. Future investigations that examine speciation through the lens of biomechanics will propel our understanding of this key process
