Power-Law Behavior of Bond Energy Correlators in a Kitaev-type Model with a Stable Parton Fermi Surface

We study bond energy correlation functions in an exactly solvable quantum spin model of Kitaev type on the kagome lattice with stable Fermi surface of partons proposed recently by Chua et al, Ref.\[arXiv:1010.1035]. Even though any spin correlations are ultra-short ranged, we find that the bond energy correlations have power law behavior with a 1/r31/|{\bm r}|^3 envelope and oscillations at incommensurate wavevectors. We determine the corresponding singular surfaces in momentum space, which provide a gauge-invariant characterization of this gapless spin liquid.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure

Exporting Hyperinflation: The Long Arm of Chiang Kai-shek

    Get PDF
As mainland China's inflationary spiral accelerated in 1947-1949 there was a massive outflow of funds to the island of Taiwan. The exporting of China's hyperinflation was facilitated by the fixed, overvalued, exchange rate between the mainland Chinese currency and the Taiwanese currency that was adopted in August 1948. Empirical tests offer support for the importance of the 1948 monetary policy reform and suggest a substantial impact of capital inflows and excess money growth in mainland China on inflationary pressures in Taiwan. We find no independent role for Taiwanese money growth in the inflation process.

Majorana Spin Liquids on a two-leg ladder

We realize a gapless Majorana Orbital Liquid (MOL) using orbital degrees of freedom and also an SU(2)-invariant Majorana Spin Liquid (MSL) using both spin and orbital degrees of freedom in Kitaev-type models on a 2-leg ladder. The models are exactly solvable by Kitaev's parton approach, and we obtain long-wavelength descriptions for both Majorana liquids. The MOL has one gapless mode and power law correlations in energy at incommensuare wavevectors, while the SU(2) MSL has three gapless modes and power law correlations in spin, spin-nematic, and local energy observables. We study the stability of such states to perturbations away from the exactly solvable points. We find that both MOL and MSL can be stable against allowed short-range parton interactions. We also argue that both states persist upon allowing Z2Z_2 gauge field fluctuations, in that the number of gapless modes is retained, although with an expanded set of contributions to observables compared to the free parton mean field.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures. A perception and manipulation system for collecting rock samples

    Get PDF
An important part of a planetary exploration mission is to collect and analyze surface samples. As part of the Carnegie Mellon University Ambler Project, researchers are investigating techniques for collecting samples using a robot arm and a range sensor. The aim of this work is to make the sample collection operation fully autonomous. Described here are the components of the experimental system, including a perception module that extracts objects of interest from range images and produces models of their shapes, and a manipulation module that enables the system to pick up the objects identified by the perception module. The system was tested on a small testbed using natural terrain

The impact of artificial intelligence on sustainable corporate brand:a netnography study of tesla

Abstract. The global market has become ever more turbulent due to digitalisation and digital transformation. Artificial Intelligence (AI) plays a central role in moving forward the advance of technology. AI has become an important research field in marketing while various companies have successfully implemented AI technologies to meet customers’ needs. However, the impacts of AI on brands have not been widely explored in both scientific and managerial aspects. Brands generate values for businesses by providing functional and non-functional benefits that can be contributed by implementing AI technologies. Mainly, developing sustainability is crucial to address stakeholders’ concerns for today’s brands. The sustainable corporate brand can be a solution to this market demand as its promise has sustainability as a core value. Through exploring this phenomenon, the thesis answers the research question: to what extent does AI contribute positive impacts on sustainable corporate brands in the electric autonomous vehicle (EAVs) sector? The EAVs industry, represented by the case company, Tesla, is chosen for conducting this research because it integrates the variants of electric vehicles that provide environmental benefits and the autonomous cars that use AI technologies. The study is performed using the qualitative research method of netnography. The data are collected from the publicly available information on Twitter and Youtube based on their relevance to the research question. One hundred sixty tweets and thirteen Youtube videos are extracted in textual form and analysed following the guidelines of thematic analysis and triangulated with multiple sources of data. The key results of the research suggest the unique characteristics of the three AI features, machine learning, natural language processing (NLP) and Big Data analytics, help create the normative emotions and efficacy in the mind of stakeholders. These norms of emotions and efficacy further motivate stakeholders’ normative actions that, in return, enhance the normative emotions and efficacy in a loop. Five elements represent the values AI technologies contribute to brand promise through creating a unique experience for the stakeholders that differentiate the brand from its competitors. The refreshed excitements and trust are brought by machine learning technologies. The fun and human characteristics and safety are brought by NLP technologies. Technology superiority is made possible through Big Data analytics. Four elements act for the values conveyed by AI technologies that enrich and expand the brand identity. NLP features can effectively enhance the connections between the focal brand and the other brand associations: the CEO, the affiliate brands and meaningful cultural references. The shared ownership of the brand is intensified through the co-creation of Big Data analytics. By contributing to brand promise and brand identity, AI implementation helps foster positive impacts in building an authentic, emotionally charged, and behaviourally based sustainable corporate brand

A Codazzi-like equation and the singular set for C1C^{1} smooth surfaces in the Heisenberg group

In this paper, we study the structure of the singular set for a C1C^{1} smooth surface in the 33-dimensional Heisenberg group H1\boldsymbol{H}_{1}. We discover a Codazzi-like equation for the pp-area element along the characteristic curves on the surface. Information obtained from this ordinary differential equation helps us to analyze the local configuration of the singular set and the characteristic curves. In particular, we can estimate the size and obtain the regularity of the singular set. We understand the global structure of the singular set through a Hopf-type index theorem. We also justify that Codazzi-like equation by proving a fundamental theorem for local surfaces in H1\boldsymbol{H}_{1}.Comment: 64 pages, 17 figure

The nature of CuA in cytochrome c oxidase

    Get PDF
The isolation and purification of yeast cytochrome c oxidase is described. Characterization of the purified protein indicates that it is spectroscopically identical with cytochrome c oxidase isolated from beef heart. Preparations of isotopically substituted yeast cytochrome c oxidase are obtained incorporating [1,3-15N2]histidine or [beta,beta- 2H2]cysteine. Electron paramagnetic resonance and electron nuclear double resonance spectra of the isotopically substituted proteins identify unambiguously at least 1 cysteine and 1 histidine as ligands to CuA and suggest that substantial spin density is delocalized onto a cysteine sulfur in the oxidized protein to render the site Cu(I)-S
