On Observability and Monitoring of Distributed Systems: An Industry Interview Study
Business success of companies heavily depends on the availability and
performance of their client applications. Due to modern development paradigms
such as DevOps and microservice architectural styles, applications are
decoupled into services with complex interactions and dependencies. Although
these paradigms enable individual development cycles with reduced delivery
times, they cause several challenges to manage the services in distributed
systems. One major challenge is to observe and monitor such distributed
systems. This paper provides a qualitative study to understand the challenges
and good practices in the field of observability and monitoring of distributed
systems. In 28 semi-structured interviews with software professionals we
discovered increasing complexity and dynamics in that field. Especially
observability becomes an essential prerequisite to ensure stable services and
further development of client applications. However, the participants mentioned
a discrepancy in the awareness regarding the importance of the topic, both from
the management as well as from the developer perspective. Besides technical
challenges, we identified a strong need for an organizational concept including
strategy, roles and responsibilities. Our results support practitioners in
developing and implementing systematic observability and monitoring for
distributed systems
Die Kritik der Politischen Ăkonomie der Medien/Kommunikation: ein hochaktueller Ansatz
This debate article discusses how topical the approach of the Critique of the Political Economy of Media/Communication is today. The paper analyses the status of this field. At the international level, there is a longer tradition in the Critical Political Economy of Media/Communication, especially in the United Kingdom and North America. Since the start of the new crisis of capitalism in 2008, the interest in Marxâs works has generally increased. At the same time communicative and ideological features of societal changesâ unpredictable turbulences have become evident. This contribution introduces some specific approaches. It also discusses 14 aspects of why the complex, multidimensional, open and dynamic research approach of the critique of capitalism and society that goes back Marxâs theory remains relevant today
Comparing Static and Dynamic Weighted Software Coupling Metrics
Coupling metrics that count the number of inter-module connections in a software system
are an established way to measure internal software quality with respect to modularity. In addition to
static metrics, which are obtained from the source or compiled code of a program, dynamic metrics
use runtime data gathered, e.g., by monitoring a system in production. Dynamic metrics have been
used to improve the accuracy of static metrics for object-oriented software. We study weighted
dynamic coupling that takes into account how often a connection (e.g., a method call) is executed
during a systemâs run. We investigate the correlation between dynamic weighted metrics and their
static counterparts. To compare the different metrics, we use data collected from four different
experiments, each monitoring production use of a commercial software system over a period of four
weeks. We observe an unexpected level of correlation between the static and the weighted dynamic
case as well as revealing differences between class- and package-level analyses
The Cyclophilin-Binding Agent Sanglifehrin A Is a Dendritic Cell Chemokine and Migration Inhibitor
Sanglifehrin A (SFA) is a cyclophilin-binding immunosuppressant but the immunobiology of action is poorly understood. We and others have reported that SFA inhibits IL-12 production and antigen uptake in dendritic cells (DC) and exhibits lower activity against lymphocytes. Here we show that SFA suppresses DC chemokine production and migration. Gene expression analysis and subsequent protein level confirmation revealed that SFA suppressed CCL5, CCL17, CCL19, CXCL9 and CXCL10 expression in human monocyte-derived DC (moDC). A systems biology analysis, Onto Express, confirmed that SFA interferes with chemokine-chemokine receptor gene expression with the highest impact. Direct comparison with the related agent cyclosporine A (CsA) and dexamethasone indicated that SFA uniquely suppresses moDC chemokine expression. Competitive experiments with a 100-fold molar excess of CsA and with N-Methyl-Val-4-cyclosporin, representing a nonimmunosuppressive derivative of CsA indicated chemokine suppression through a cyclophilin-A independent pathway. Functional assays confirmed reduced migration of CD4+ Tcells and moDCs to supernatant of SFA-exposed moDCs. Vice versa, SFA-exposed moDC exhibited reduced migration against CCL19. Moreover, SFA suppressed expression of the ectoenzyme CD38 that was reported to regulate DC migration and cytokine production. These results identify SFA as a DC chemokine and migration inhibitor and provide novel insight into the immunobiology of SFA
