The sedimentology and geomorphology of rock avalanche deposits on glaciers
This article describes and compares the deposits of four large landslides on two glaciers in Alaska using field mapping and remote sensing. Digital image analysis is used to compare the sedimentological characteristics of nearly 200 000 individual surface blocks deposited by three landslides at Black Rapids Glacier in 2002. The debris sheets of one of the three landslides on Black Rapids Glacier and a landslide emplaced on Sherman Glacier in 1964 are also investigated. The three landslides on Black Rapids Glacier have undergone little post-depositional modification by glacier flow, whereas the Sherman Glacier landslide has been transported supraglacially up to ca 1 km over the past 46 years. The three debris sheets on Black Rapids Glacier have coarse blocky rims at their distal edges, and all four debris sheets have longitudinal flowbands characterized by differences in texture and produced by shearing within the moving debris. Elongated blocks are parallel to flow, except at the perimeter of the debris sheets, where they are aligned more perpendicular to flow. Blocks on the Sherman Glacier debris sheet have been reoriented by glacier flow. The matrix shows no systematic differences with depth or distance from the source. However, it appears to become coarser over a time scale of decades due to weathering
The response of Black Rapids Glacier, Alaska, to the Denali earthquake rock avalanches
We describe the impact of three simultaneous earthquake-triggered rock avalanches on the dynamics of Black Rapids Glacier, Alaska, by using spaceborne radar imagery and numerical modeling. We determined the velocities of the glacier before and after landslide deposition in 2002 by using a combination of ERS-1/ERS-2 tandem, RADARSAT-1, and ALOS PALSAR synthetic aperture radar data. Ice velocity above the debris-covered area of the glacier increased up to 14% after the earthquake but then decreased 20% by 2005. Within the area of the debris sheets, mean glacier surface velocity increased 44% within 2 years of the landslides. At the downglacier end of the lowest landslide, where strong differential ablation produced a steep ice cliff, velocities increased by 109% over the same period. By 2007, ice velocity throughout the debris area had become more uniform, consistent with a constant ice flux resulting from drastically reduced ablation at the base of the debris. Without further analysis, we cannot prove that these changes resulted from the landslides, because Black Rapids Glacier displays large seasonal and interannual variations in velocity. However, a full Stokes numerical ice flow model of a simplified glacier geometry produced a reversal of the velocity gradient from compressional to extensional flow after 5 years, which supports our interpretation that the recent changes in the velocity field of the glacier are related to landslide-induced mass balance changes
âBoundaryâ: Mapping and Visualizing Climatically Changed Landscapes at Kaskawulsh Glacier and Kluane Lake, Yukon
This paper describes a collaboration between a visual artist and geoscientists, who together viewed the same rugged, high mountain landscape through different, yet complementary, lenses. We pair scientific mapping and historic comparative photography with a series of site-specific sculptural installations to interpret the dramatic geological changes that occurred at Kaskawulsh Glacier, Yukon, in the spring of 2016. In the summer of that year, artist K.A. Colorado accompanied geoscientists D.H. Shugar, J.J. Clague, and J.L. Best to the terminus of Kaskawulsh Glacier, as well as Kluane Lake downstream of the glacier, to document the landscape changes that occurred earlier in the year. The Boundary images were created as on-site, three-dimensional, artistic interpretations of the markedly changed boundaries that occurred as a result of climate-induced glacier retreat and the sudden subcontinental-scale reorganization of drainage. Both the scientific study conducted by the geomorphologists and the art installations created by the artist were performed simultaneously. Tree-Ring Dates for the Maximum Little Ice Age Advance of Kaskawulsh Glacier, St. Elias Mountains, Canada
A dendroglaciological study at Kaskawulsh Glacier provides the first calendar dating of a Little Ice Age glacier advance in the northeast St. Elias Mountains of Yukon Territory. Ring series from white spruce trees, Picea glauca (Moench) Voss, that had been sheared, tilted, and killed by deposition of till at the glacierâs terminal moraine were cross-dated with a millennium-length ring-width chronology developed at a site near the south end of Kluane Lake, about 25 km north of the glacier forefield. Six cross-dated samples from two sites at Kaskawulsh Glacier suggest that the north lobe of the glacier reached its greatest Holocene extent in the mid-1750s. Additional limited data suggest that the east lobe may have reached its maximum extent somewhat earlier (ca. 1717). This chronology of Little Ice Age activity of Kaskawulsh Glacier is consistent with well-dated glacier chronologies from adjacent mountain ranges in coastal and interior Alaska. The results also demonstrate the potential to derive calendar dates from subfossil wood in the St. Elias Mountains that hitherto had been dated only with much lower precision, using radiocarbon techniques.LâĂ©tude dendroglaciologique du glacier Kaskawulsh fournit la premiĂšre datation de calendrier de lâavancĂ©e glaciaire du petit Ăąge glaciaire, dans le nord-est des montagnes St. Elias, territoire du Yukon. Reconstructing historic Glacial Lake Outburst Floods through numerical modelling and geomorphological assessment:Extreme events in the Himalaya
Recession of highâmountain glaciers in response to climatic change frequently results in the development of moraineâdammed glacial lakes. Moraine dam failure is often accompanied by the release of large volumes of water and sediment, termed a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF). Chukhung Glacier is a small (~3âkm2) receding valley glacier in Mt. Everest (Sagarmatha) National Park, Nepal. Unlike many Himalayan glaciers, which possess a thick mantle of supraglacial debris, its surface is relatively clean. The glacier terminus has receded 1.3âkm from its maximum Holocene position, and in doing so provided the space for an iceâcontact moraineâdammed lake to develop. The lake had a maximum volume of 5.5âĂâ105âm3 and drained as a result of breaching of the terminal moraine. An estimated 1.3âĂâ105âm3 of material was removed from the terminal moraine during breach development. Numerical damâbreach modelling, implemented within a Generalised Likelihood Uncertainty Estimation (GLUE) framework, was used to investigate a range of moraineâdam failure scenarios. Reconstructed outflow peak discharges, including failure via overtopping and piping mechanisms, are in the range 146â2200âm3âsâ1. Results from twoâdimensional hydrodynamic GLOF modelling indicate that maximum local flow depths may have exceeded 9âm, with maximum flow velocities exceeding 20âmâsâ1 within 700âm of the breach. The floodwaters mobilised a significant amount of material, sourced mostly from the expanding breach, forming a 300âm long and 100âm wide debris fan originating at the breach exit. moraineâdam. These results also suggest that inundation of the entire floodplain may have been achieved within ten minutes of initial breach development, suggesting that debris fan development was rapid. We discuss the key glaciological and geomorphological factors that have determined the evolution of a hazardous moraineâdammed lake complex and the subsequent generation of a GLOF and its geomorphological impact

Academic geriatric medicine in Leicester

There has never been a better time to consider joining us. We have recently appointed a
Professor in Geriatric Medicine, alongside Tom Robinson in stroke and Victoria Haunton,
who has just joined as a Senior Lecturer in Geriatric Medicine. We have fantastic
opportunities to support students in their academic pursuits through a well-established
intercalated BSc programme, and routes on through such as ACF posts, and a successful
track-record in delivering higher degrees leading to ACL post. We collaborate strongly
with Health Sciences, including academic primary care. See below for more detail on our
existing academic set-up.
Leicester Academy for the Study of Ageing
We are also collaborating on a grander scale, through a joint academic venture focusing
on ageing, the âLeicester Academy for the Study of Ageingâ (LASA), which involves the
local health service providers (acute and community), De Montfort University; University
of Leicester; Leicester City Council; Leicestershire County Council and Leicester Age UK.
Professors Jayne Brown and Simon Conroy jointly Chair LASA and have recently been
joined by two further Chairs, Professors Kay de Vries and Bertha Ochieng. Karen
Harrison Dening has also recently been appointed an Honorary Chair.
LASA aims to improve outcomes for older people and those that care for them that takes
a person-centred, whole system perspective. Our research will take a global perspective,
but will seek to maximise benefits for the people of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland,
including building capacity. We are undertaking applied, translational, interdisciplinary
research, focused on older people, which will deliver research outcomes that address
domains from: physical/medical; functional ability, cognitive/psychological; social or
environmental factors. LASA also seeks to support commissioners and providers alike for
advice on how to improve care for older people, whether by research, education or
service delivery. Examples of recent research projects include: âLocal History CafĂ©â
project specifically undertaking an evaluation on loneliness and social isolation; âBetter
Visitsâ project focused on improving visiting for family members of people with dementia
resident in care homes; and a study on health issues for older LGBT people in Leicester.
Clinical Geriatric Medicine in Leicester
We have developed a service which recognises the complexity of managing frail older
people at the interface (acute care, emergency care and links with community services).
There are presently 17 consultant geriatricians supported by existing multidisciplinary
teams, including the largest complement of Advance Nurse Practitioners in the country.
Together we deliver Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment to frail older people with
urgent care needs in acute and community settings.
The acute and emergency frailty units â Leicester Royal Infirmary
This development aims at delivering Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment to frail older
people in the acute setting. Patients are screened for frailty in the Emergency
Department and then undergo a multidisciplinary assessment including a consultant
geriatrician, before being triaged to the most appropriate setting. This might include
admission to in-patient care in the acute or community setting, intermediate care
(residential or home based), or occasionally other specialist care (e.g. cardiorespiratory).
Our new emergency department is the countyâs first frail friendly build and includes
fantastic facilities aimed at promoting early recovering and reducing the risk of hospital
associated harms.
There is also a daily liaison service jointly run with the psychogeriatricians (FOPAL); we
have been examining geriatric outreach to oncology and surgery as part of an NIHR
funded study.
We are home to the Acute Frailty Network, and those interested in service developments
at the national scale would be welcome to get involved.
Orthogeriatrics
There are now dedicated hip fracture wards and joint care with anaesthetists,
orthopaedic surgeons and geriatricians. There are also consultants in metabolic bone
disease that run clinics.
Community work
Community work will consist of reviewing patients in clinic who have been triaged to
return to the community setting following an acute assessment described above.
Additionally, primary care colleagues refer to outpatients for sub-acute reviews. You will
work closely with local GPs with support from consultants to deliver post-acute, subacute,
intermediate and rehabilitation care services.

Gis-based gully erosion susceptibility mapping: a comparison of computational ensemble data mining models
Gully erosion destroys agricultural and domestic grazing land in many countries, especially those with arid and semi-arid climates and easily eroded rocks and soils. It also generates large amounts of sediment that can adversely impact downstream river channels. The main objective of this research is to accurately detect and predict areas prone to gully erosion. In this paper, we couple hybrid models of a commonly used base classifier (reduced pruning error tree, REPTree) with AdaBoost (AB), bagging (Bag), and random subspace (RS) algorithms to create gully erosion susceptibility maps for a sub-basin of the Shoor River watershed in northwestern Iran. We compare the performance of these models in terms of their ability to predict gully erosion and discuss their potential use in other arid and semi-arid areas. Our database comprises 242 gully erosion locations, which we randomly divided into training and testing sets with a ratio of 70/30. Based on expert knowledge and analysis of aerial photographs and satellite images, we selected 12 conditioning factors for gully erosion. We used multi-collinearity statistical techniques in the modeling process, and checked model performance using statistical indexes including precision, recall, F-measure, Matthew correlation coefficient (MCC), receiver operatic characteristic curve (ROC), precision-recall graph (PRC), Kappa, root mean square error (RMSE), relative absolute error (PRSE), mean absolute error (MAE), and relative absolute error (RAE). Results show that rainfall, elevation, and river density are the most important factors for gully erosion susceptibility mapping in the study area. All three hybrid models that we tested significantly enhanced and improved the predictive power of REPTree (AUC=0.800), but the RS-REPTree (AUC= 0.860) ensemble model outperformed the Bag-REPTree (AUC= 0.841) and the AB-REPTree (AUC= 0.805) models. We suggest that decision makers, planners, and environmental engineers employ the RS-REPTree hybrid model to better manage gully erosion-prone areas in Iran
FBXL4 ubiquitin ligase deficiency promotes mitophagy by elevating NIX levels
Selective autophagy of mitochondria, mitophagy, is linked to mitochondrial quality control and as such is critical to a healthy organism. We have used a CRISPR/Cas9 approach to screen human E3 ubiquitin ligases for influence on mitophagy under both basal cell culture conditions and upon acute mitochondrial depolarization. We identify two cullin-RING ligase substrate receptors, VHL and FBXL4, as the most profound negative regulators of basal mitophagy. We show that these converge, albeit via different mechanisms, on control of the mitophagy adaptors BNIP3 and BNIP3L/NIX. FBXL4 restricts NIX and BNIP3 levels via direct interaction and protein destabilization, while VHL acts through suppression of HIF1α-mediated transcription of BNIP3 and NIX. Depletion of NIX but not BNIP3 is sufficient to restore mitophagy levels. Our study contributes to an understanding of the aetiology of early-onset mitochondrial encephalomyopathy that is supported by analysis of a disease-associated mutation. We further show that the compound MLN4924, which globally interferes with cullin-RING ligase activity, is a strong inducer of mitophagy, thus providing a research tool in this context and a candidate therapeutic agent for conditions linked to mitochondrial dysfunction
Ear and hearing care programs for First Nations children: a scoping review
Background: Ear and hearing care programs are critical to early detection and management of otitis media (or middle ear disease). Otitis media and associated hearing loss disproportionately impacts First Nations children. This affects speech and language development, social and cognitive development and, in turn, education and life outcomes. This scoping review aimed to better understand how ear and hearing care programs for First Nations children in high-income colonial-settler countries aimed to reduce the burden of otitis media and increase equitable access to care. Specifically, the review aimed to chart program strategies, map the focus of each program against 4 parts of a care pathway (prevention, detection, diagnosis/management, rehabilitation), and to identify the factors that indicated the longer-term sustainability and success of programs. Method: A database search was conducted in March 2021 using Medline, Embase, Global Health, APA PsycInfo, CINAHL, Web of Science Core Collection, Scopus, and Academic Search Premier. Programs were eligible or inclusion if they had either been developed or run at any time between January 2010 to March 2021. Search terms encompassed terms such as First Nations children, ear and hearing care, and health programs, initiatives, campaigns, and services. Results: Twenty-seven articles met the criteria to be included in the review and described a total of twenty-one ear and hearing care programs. Programs employed strategies to: (i) connect patients to specialist services, (ii) improve cultural safety of services, and (iii) increase access to ear and hearing care services. However, program evaluation measures were limited to outputs or the evaluation of service-level outcome, rather than patient-based outcomes. Factors which contributed to program sustainability included funding and community involvement although these were limited in many cases. Conclusion: The result of this study highlighted that programs primarily operate at two points along the care pathwayâdetection and diagnosis/management, presumably where the greatest need lies. Targeted strategies were used to address these, some which were limited in their approach. The success of many programs are evaluated as outputs, and many programs rely on funding sources which can potentially limit longer-term sustainability. Finally, the involvement of First Nations people and communities typically only occurred during implementation rather than across the development of the program. Future programs should be embedded within a connected system of care and tied to existing policies and funding streams to ensure long term viability. Programs should be governed and evaluated by First Nations communities to further ensure programs are sustainable and are designed to meet community needs
Cellular localization, accumulation and trafficking of double-walled carbon nanotubes in human prostate cancer cells
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are at present being considered as potential nanovectors with the ability to deliver therapeutic cargoes into living cells. Previous studies established the ability of CNTs to enter cells and their therapeutic utility, but an appreciation of global intracellular trafficking associated with their cellular distribution has yet to be described. Despite the many aspects of the uptake mechanism of CNTs being studied, only a few studies have investigated internalization and fate of CNTs inside cells in detail. In the present study, intracellular localization and trafficking of RNA-wrapped, oxidized double-walled CNTs (oxDWNTâRNA) is presented. Fixed cells, previously exposed to oxDWNTâRNA, were subjected to immunocytochemical analysis using antibodies specific to proteins implicated in endocytosis; moreover cell compartment markers and pharmacological inhibitory conditions were also employed in this study. Our results revealed that an endocytic pathway is involved in the internalization of oxDWNTâRNA. The nanotubes were found in clathrin-coated vesicles, after which they appear to be sorted in early endosomes, followed by vesicular maturation, become located in lysosomes. Furthermore, we observed co-localization of oxDWNTâRNA with the small GTP-binding protein (Rab 11), involved in their recycling back to the plasma membrane via endosomes from the trans-golgi network
