    Observation of Damage Growth in Compressively Loaded Laminates

    An experimental program to determine tie phenomenological aspects of composite-panel failure under simultaneous compressive n-plane loading and low-velocity transverse impact [C-75 m/s (0-250 ft/s)] is described. High-speed photography coupled with the shadow-moiré technique is used to record the phenomenon of failure propagation. The information gained from these records, supplemented by plate sectioning and observation for interior damage, has provided information regarding the failure-propagation mechanism. The results show that the failure process can be divided roughly into two phases. In the first phase the plane is impacted, and the resulting response causes interlaminar separation. In the second phase the local damage spreads to the undamaged portion of the plate through a combination of laminae buckling and further delamination

    Theoretical isochrones for the Delta a photometric system

    We have calculated theoretical isochrones for the photometric Delta a system to derive astrophysical parameters such as the age, reddening and distance modulus for open clusters. The Delta a system samples the flux depression at 520 nm which is highly efficient to detect chemically peculiar (CP) objects of the upper main sequence. The evolutionary status of CP stars is still a matter of debate and very important to test, for example, the dynamo and diffusion theories. In fact, the dynamo or fossil origin of the magnetic fields present in this kind of stars it still not clear. Using the stellar evolutionary models by Claret (1995), a grid of isochrones with different initial chemical compositions for the Delta a system was generated. The published data of 23 open clusters were used to fit these isochrones with astrophysical parameters (age, reddening and distance modulus) from the literature. As an additional test, isochrones with the same parameters for Johnson UBV data of these open clusters were also considered. The fits show a good agreement between the observations and the theoretical grid. We find that the accuracy of fitting isochrones to Delta a data without the knowledge of the cluster parameters is between 5 and 15%.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted by A&

    This research is the culmination of a quest to investigate if the California State University, Monterey Bay Campus’ students and faculty have been giving thought about the upcoming 2008 General Election. The purpose was to gain a sense of if the CSUMB community was truly aware, or even cared, that they would have the opportunity to vote for the next President of the United States in the November General Election of next year. What was discovered correlated strongly with that which I have read in previous literature stating that family tradition and ideology greatly influence the way voters think and will vote and that whether citizens vote regularly or not, they will display similar knowledge of current events based on the news sources that are utilized to remain current of popular domestic and international situations. Also, the news sources reported by respondents are chosen as a result of ones ideology backed by family tradition

    A study was conducted on the North Slope of the Uinta Mountains from January, 1972 through June, 1974, to determine the effects of three simulated levels of moose utilization on the crude protein content, phosphorus content, digestibility and vigor of willow plants. A comparison was also made on the crude protein content, phosphorus content and digestibility of current year\u27s versus past years\u27 willow growth. Finally, the validity of direct and indirect population enumeration methods was compared for the possible development of a standardized moose survey technique. Clipping caused a highly significant increase in crude protein and phosphorus content between treatment levels. There was also a highly significant increase in digestibility between years. Plant vigor comparisons were confounded by additional sources of mortality and the effects of environmental variables. A comparison of the nutrient content and digestibility of 1 t o 5 year-old willow growth showed that crude protein content, phosphor us content and digestibility decreased with increasing twig age. Additional factors are discussed which indicate that the carrying capacity of the winter range is larger than previously described. A poor correlation was found be tween direct aerial moose observations and indirect population estimates from pellet-group counts
