Epidemiological and clinical features of travel-associated cryptosporidiosis
ABSTRACTData concerning the clinical and epidemiological features of travel-associated cryptosporidiosis are lacking. In order to investigate the impact of this disease on travellers' health, a retrospective study was conducted at the Institute of Tropical Medicine, Berlin. In total, 57 cryptosporidial infections were identified between 2000 and 2004, resulting in a prevalence of 2.9% in patients with travel-associated diarrhoea. Travel to south-central Asia, especially India, was associated with a higher prevalence of infection than was travel to other destinations. Clinically, the disease resembled giardiasis, but fever and arthralgias seemed to occur more frequently
Novel Nonreciprocal Acoustic Effects in Antiferromagnets
The possible occurrence of nonreciprocal acoustic effects in antiferromagnets
in the absence of an external magnetic field is investigated using both (i) a
microscopic formulation of the magnetoelastic interaction between spins and
phonons and (ii) symmetry arguments. We predict for certain antiferromagnets
the existence of two new nonreciprocal (non-time invariant) effects:
A boundary-condition induced nonreciprocal effect and the occurrence of
transversal phonon modes propagating in opposite directions having different
velocities. Estimates are given and possible materials for these effects to be

Specific heat amplitude ratios for anisotropic Lifshitz critical behaviors
We determine the specific heat amplitude ratio near a -axial Lifshitz
point and show its universal character. Using a recent renormalization group
picture along with new field-theoretical -expansion techniques,
we established this amplitude ratio at one-loop order. We estimate the
numerical value of this amplitude ratio for and . The result is in
very good agreement with its experimental measurement on the magnetic material
. It is shown that in the limit it trivially reduces to the

Electronic Transport in a Three-dimensional Network of 1-D Bismuth Quantum Wires
The resistance R of a high density network of 6 nm diameter Bi wires in
porous Vycor glass is studied in order to observe its expected semiconductor
behavior. R increases from 300 K down to 0.3 K. Below 4 K, where R varies
approximately as ln(1/T), the order-of-magnitude of the resistance rise, as
well as the behavior of the magnetoresistance are consistent with localization
and electron-electron interaction theories of a one-dimensional disordered
conductor in the presence of strong spin-orbit scattering. We show that this
behaviour and the surface-enhanced carrier density may mask the proposed
semimetal-to-semiconductor transition for quantum Bi wires.Comment: 19 pages total, 4 figures; accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
Corporate governance and financial constraints on strategic turnarounds
The paper extends the Robbins and Pearce (1992) two-stage turnaround response model to include governance factors. In addition to the retrenchment and recovery, the paper proposes the addition of a realignment stage, referring specifically to the re-alignment of expectations of principal and agent groups. The realignment stage imposes a threshold that must be crossed before the retrenchment and hence recovery stage can be entered. Crossing this threshold is problematic to the extent that the interests of governance-stakeholder groups diverge in a crisis situation. The severity of the crisis impacts on the bases of strategy contingent asset valuation leading to the fragmentation of stakeholder interests. In some cases the consequence may be that management are prevented from carrying out turnarounds by governance constraints. The paper uses a case study to illustrate these dynamics, and like the Robbins and Pearce study, it focuses on the textile industry. A longitudinal approach is used to show the impact of the removal of governance constraints. The empirical evidence suggests that such financial constraints become less serious to the extent that there is a functioning market for corporate control. Building on governance research and turnaround literature, the paper also outlines the general case necessary and sufficient conditions for successful turnarounds
FACT -- the First Cherenkov Telescope using a G-APD Camera for TeV Gamma-ray Astronomy (HEAD 2010)
Geiger-mode Avalanche Photodiodes (G-APD) bear the potential to significantly
improve the sensitivity of Imaging Air Cherenkov Telescopes (IACT). We are
currently building the First G-APD Cherenkov Telescope (FACT) by refurbishing
an old IACT with a mirror area of 9.5 square meters and construct a new, fine
pixelized camera using novel G-APDs. The main goal is to evaluate the
performance of a complete system by observing very high energy gamma-rays from
the Crab Nebula. This is an important field test to check the feasibility of
G-APD-based cameras to replace at some time the PMT-based cameras of planned
future IACTs like AGIS and CTA. In this article, we present the basic design of

The PANDA GEM-based TPC Prototype
We report on the development of a GEM-based TPC prototype for the PANDA
experiment. The design and requirements of this device will be illustrated,
with particular emphasis on the properties of the recently tested GEM-detector,
the characterization of the read-out electronics and the development of the

A Halomethane thermochemical network from iPEPICO experiments and quantum chemical calculations
Internal energy selected halomethane cations CH3Cl+, CH2Cl2+, CHCl3+, CH3F+, CH2F2+, CHClF2+ and CBrClF2+ were prepared by vacuum ultraviolet photoionization, and their lowest energy dissociation channel studied using imaging photoelectron photoion coincidence spectroscopy (iPEPICO). This channel involves hydrogen atom loss for CH3F+, CH2F2+ and CH3Cl+, chlorine atom loss for CH2Cl2+, CHCl3+ and CHClF2+, and bromine atom loss for CBrClF2+. Accurate 0 K appearance energies, in conjunction with ab initio isodesmic and halogen exchange reaction energies, establish a thermochemical network, which is optimized to update and confirm the enthalpies of formation of the sample molecules and their dissociative photoionization products. The ground electronic states of CHCl3+, CHClF2+ and CBrClF2+ do not confirm to the deep well assumption, and the experimental breakdown curve deviates from the deep well model at low energies. Breakdown curve analysis of such shallow well systems supplies a satisfactorily succinct route to the adiabatic ionization energy of the parent molecule, particularly if the threshold photoelectron spectrum is not resolved and a purely computational route is unfeasible. The ionization energies have been found to be 11.47 ± 0.01 eV, 12.30 ± 0.02 eV and 11.23 ± 0.03 eV for CHCl3, CHClF2 and CBrClF2, respectively. The updated 0 K enthalpies of formation, ∆fHo0K(g) for the ions CH2F+, CHF2+, CHCl2+, CCl3+, CCl2F+ and CClF2+ have been derived to be 844.4 ± 2.1, 601.6 ± 2.7, 890.3 ± 2.2, 849.8 ± 3.2, 701.2 ± 3.3 and 552.2 ± 3.4 kJ mol–1, respectively. The ∆fHo0K(g) values for the neutrals CCl4, CBrClF2, CClF3, CCl2F2 and CCl3F and have been determined to be –94.0 ± 3.2, –446.6 ± 2.7, –702.1 ± 3.5, –487.8 ± 3.4 and –285.2 ± 3.2 kJ mol–1, respectively
FACT -- The G-APD revolution in Cherenkov astronomy
Since two years, the FACT telescope is operating on the Canary Island of La
Palma. Apart from its purpose to serve as a monitoring facility for the
brightest TeV blazars, it was built as a major step to establish solid state
photon counters as detectors in Cherenkov astronomy. The camera of the First
G-APD Cherenkov Telesope comprises 1440 Geiger-mode avalanche photo diodes
(G-APD), equipped with solid light guides to increase the effective light
collection area of each sensor. Since no sense-line is available, a special
challenge is to keep the applied voltage stable although the current drawn by
the G-APD depends on the flux of night-sky background photons significantly
varying with ambient light conditions. Methods have been developed to keep the
temperature and voltage dependent response of the G-APDs stable during
operation. As a cross-check, dark count spectra with high statistics have been
taken under different environmental conditions. In this presentation, the
project, the developed methods and the experience from two years of operation
of the first G-APD based camera in Cherenkov astronomy under changing

Bulk and Boundary Critical Behavior at Lifshitz Points
Lifshitz points are multicritical points at which a disordered phase, a
homogeneous ordered phase, and a modulated ordered phase meet. Their bulk
universality classes are described by natural generalizations of the standard
model. Analyzing these models systematically via modern
field-theoretic renormalization group methods has been a long-standing
challenge ever since their introduction in the middle of the 1970s. We survey
the recent progress made in this direction, discussing results obtained via
dimensionality expansions, how they compare with Monte Carlo results, and open
problems. These advances opened the way towards systematic studies of boundary
critical behavior at -axial Lifshitz points. The possible boundary critical
behavior depends on whether the surface plane is perpendicular to one of the
modulation axes or parallel to all of them. We show that the semi-infinite
field theories representing the corresponding surface universality classes in
these two cases of perpendicular and parallel surface orientation differ
crucially in their Hamiltonian's boundary terms and the implied boundary
conditions, and explain recent results along with our current understanding of
