Superconductivity under pressure in the Dirac semimetal PdTe2
The Dirac semimetal PdTe was recently reported to be a type-I
superconductor (1.64 K, mT) with unusual
superconductivity of the surface sheath. We here report a high-pressure study,
GPa, of the superconducting phase diagram extracted from
ac-susceptibility and transport measurements on single crystalline samples.
shows a pronounced non-monotonous variation with a maximum 1.91 K around 0.91 GPa, followed by a gradual decrease to 1.27 K at 2.5 GPa.
The critical field of bulk superconductivity in the limit ,
, follows a similar trend and consequently the -curves
under pressure collapse on a single curve: .
Surface superconductivity is robust under pressure as demonstrated by the large
superconducting screening signal that persists for applied dc-fields . Surprisingly, for GPa the superconducting transition
temperature at the surface is larger than of the bulk. Therefore
surface superconductivity may possibly have a non-trivial nature and is
connected to the topological surface states detected by ARPES. We compare the
measured pressure variation of with recent results from band structure
calculations and discuss the importance of a Van Hove singularity.Comment: manuscript 9 pages with 8 figures + supplemental material 3 pages

Challenges in diagnosing scrub typhus among hospitalized patients with undifferentiated fever at a national tertiary hospital in northern Vietnam
BACKGROUND:
Scrub typhus (ST) is a leading cause of non-malarial febrile illness in Southeast Asia, but evidence of its true disease burden is limited because of difficulties of making the clinical diagnosis and lack of adequate diagnostic tests. To describe the epidemiology and clinical characteristics of ST, we conducted an observational study using multiple diagnostic assays at a national tertiary hospital in Hanoi, Vietnam.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS:
We enrolled 1,127 patients hospitalized with documented fever between June 2012 and May 2013. Overall, 33 (2.9%) patients were diagnosed with ST by PCR and/or screening of ELISA for immunoglobulin M (IgM) with confirmatory tests: 14 (42.4%) were confirmed by indirect immunoperoxidase assay (IIP), and 19 (57.6%) were by IIP and PCR. Living by farming, conjunctival injection, eschar, aspartate aminotransferase elevation, and alanine aminotransferase elevation were significantly associated with ST cases (adjusted odds ratios (aORs): 2.8, 3.07, 48.8, 3.51, and 4.13, respectively), and having a comorbidity and neutrophilia were significantly less common in ST cases (aORs: 0.29 and 0.27, respectively). The majority of the ST cases were not clinically diagnosed with rickettsiosis (72.7%). Dominant IIP reactions against a single antigen were identified in 15 ST cases, whereas indistinguishably high reactions against multiple antigens were seen in 11 ST cases. The most frequently observed dominant IIP reaction was against Karp antigen (eight cases) followed by Gilliam (four cases). The highest diagnostic accuracy of IgM ELISA in acute samples was 78%. In a phylogenetic analysis of the 56-kDa type-specific antigen gene, the majority (14 cases) were located in the Karp-related branch followed by the Gilliam-related (two cases), Kato-related (two cases), and TA763-related clades (one case).
CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE:
Both the clinical and laboratory diagnoses of ST remain challenging at a tertiary hospital. Implementation of both serological and nucleic acid amplification assays covering endemic O. tsutsugamushi strains is essential
Synthesis and Photocatalytic Activity for Toluene Removal of CDs/TiO2 - Zeolite Y
Hydrothermally synthesized carbon nanodots (CDs) were impregnated on TiO2. The product (CDs/TiO2) was mechanically mixed with zeolite Y for application in toluene photocatalytic oxidation reaction under UV radiation. Material properties of the samples were investigated by different methods. Toluene vapor was chosen as a typical volatile organic compound to investigate the performance of CDs/TiO2 – zeolite Y photocatalyst when these technological parameters were changed: toluene concentration, gas flow rate, humidity and UV light intensity. In each reaction, only one parameter was changed and the remaining conditions were fixed. The toluene concentrations at the beginning and the end of each reaction were analyzed with the use of gas chromatography (GC). The results of different reaction conditions show the trends for toluene treatment of the CDs/TiO2 – zeolite Y catalyst, thereby providing specific explanations for these trends. The experiments also show that toluene removal is highest when the toluene concentration in the inlet gas is 314 ppmv, the flow rate is 3 L/h, the humidity is 60%, and the catalyst (CDs/TiO2 – zeolite Y composite with 70% zeolite in weight) is illuminated by 4 UV lamps. Drug-Related Problems in Prescribing for Pediatric Outpatients in Vietnam
BACKGROUND: Our study was conducted to determine the prevalence of drug-related problems (DRPs) in outpatient prescriptions, the impact of DRPs on treatment efficacy, safety, and cost, and the determinants of DRPs in prescribing for pediatric outpatients in Vietnam. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted on pediatric outpatients at a pediatric hospital in Can Tho, Vietnam. DRPs were classified according to the Pharmaceutical Care Network Europe classification (PCNE) of 2020. The study determined prevalence of DRPs and their impacts on efficacy, safety, and cost. Multivariate regression was used to identify the determinants of DRPs. RESULTS: The study included 4339 patients (mean age 4.3, 55.8% male), with a total of 3994 DRPs, averaging 0.92 DRP/prescription. The proportion of prescriptions with at least one DRP was 65.7%. DRPs included inappropriate drug selection (35.6%), wrong time of dosing relative to meals (35.6%), inappropriate dosage form (9.3%), inappropriate indication (7.1%), and drug-drug interactions (0.3%). The consensus of experts was average when evaluating each aspect of efficiency reduction, safety reduction, and treatment cost increase, with Fleiss' coefficients of 0.558, 0.511, and 0.541, respectively (p < 0.001). Regarding prescriptions, 50.1% were assessed as reducing safety. The figures for increased costs and decreased treatment effectiveness were 29.0% and 23.9%, respectively. Patients who were ≤2 years old were more likely to have DRPs than patients aged 2 to 6 years old (OR = 0.696; 95% CI = 0.599-0.809) and patients aged over 6 years old (OR = 0.801; 95% CI = 0.672-0.955). Patients who had respiratory system disease were more likely to have DRPs than patients suffering from other diseases (OR = 0.715; 95% CI = 0.607-0.843). Patients with comorbidities were less likely to have DRPs than patients with no comorbidities (OR = 1.421; 95% CI = 1.219-1.655). Patients prescribed ≥5 drugs were more likely to have DRPs than patients who took fewer drugs (OR = 3.677; 95% CI = 2.907-4.650). CONCLUSION: The proportion of prescriptions in at least one DRP was quite high. Further studies should evaluate clinical significance and appropriate interventions, such as providing drug information and consulting doctors about DRPs
Rapid assessment of Hib disease burden in Vietnam
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Several countries have applied the <it>Haemophilus influenzae </it>type b (Hib) rapid assessment tool (RAT) to estimate the burden of Hib disease where resources for hospital- or population-based surveillance are limited. In Vietnam, we used the Hib RAT to estimate the burden of Hib pneumonia and meningitis prior to Hib vaccine introduction.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Laboratory, hospitalization and mortality data were collected for the period January 2004 through December 2005 from five representative hospitals. Based on the WHO Hib RAT protocol, standardized MS Excel spreadsheets were completed to generate meningitis and pneumonia case and death figures.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We found 35 to 77 Hib meningitis deaths and 441 to 957 Hib pneumonia deaths among children < 5 years of age annually in Vietnam. Overall, the incidence of Hib meningitis was estimated at 18/100,000 (95% confidence interval, CI, 15.1-21.6). The estimated Hib meningitis incidence in children < 5 years age was higher in Ho Chi Minh City (22.5/100,000 [95% CI, 18.4-27.5]) compared to Hanoi (9.8/100,000 [95% CI, 6.5-14.8]). The Hib RAT suggests that there are a total of 883 to 1,915 cases of Hib meningitis and 4,414 to 9,574 cases of Hib pneumonia per year in Vietnam.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>In Hanoi, the estimated incidence of Hib meningitis for children < 5 years of age was similar to that described in previous population-based studies of Hib meningitis conducted from 1999 through 2002. Results from the Hib RAT suggest that there is a substantial, yet unmeasured, disease burden associated with Hib pneumonia in Vietnamese children.</p
Appropriate Antibiotic Use and Associated Factors in Vietnamese Outpatients
Background: Inappropriate antibiotic use among outpatients is recognized as the primary driver of antibiotic resistance. A proper understanding of appropriate antibiotic usage and associated factors helps to determine and limit inappropriateness. We aimed to identify the rate of appropriate use of antibiotics and identify factors associated with the inappropriate prescriptions. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional descriptive study in outpatient antibiotic use at a hospital in Can Tho City, Vietnam, from August 1, 2019, to January 31, 2020. Data were extracted from all outpatient prescriptions at the Medical Examination Department and analyzed by SPSS 18 and Chi-squared tests, with 95% confidence intervals. The rationale for antibiotic use was evaluated through antibiotic selection, dose, dosing frequency, dosing time, interactions between antibiotics and other drugs, and general appropriate usage. Results: A total of 420 prescriptions were 51.7% for females, 61.7% with health insurance, and 44.0% for patients with one comorbid condition. The general appropriate antibiotic usage rate was 86.7%. Prescriptions showed that 11.0% and 9.5% had a higher dosing frequency and dose than recommended, respectively; 10.2% had an inappropriate dosing time; 3.1% had drug interactions; and only 1.7% had been prescribed inappropriate antibiotics. The risk of inappropriate antibiotic use increased in patients with comorbidities and antibiotic treatment lasting >7 days (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The study indicated a need for more consideration when prescribing antibiotics to patients with comorbidities or using more than 7 days of treatment
Компактные разностные схемы для уравнения Клейна-Гордона
In this paper, we consider compact difference approximation of the fourth-order schemes for linear, semi-linear, and quasilinear Klein-Gordon equations. with respect to a small perturbation of initial conditions, right-hand side, and coefficients of the linear equations the strong stability of difference schemes is proved. The conducted numerical experiment shows how Runge rule is used to determine the orders of convergence of the difference scheme in the case of two independent variables.
The monomer-dimer problem and moment Lyapunov exponents of homogeneous Gaussian random fields
We consider an "elastic" version of the statistical mechanical monomer-dimer
problem on the n-dimensional integer lattice. Our setting includes the
classical "rigid" formulation as a special case and extends it by allowing each
dimer to consist of particles at arbitrarily distant sites of the lattice, with
the energy of interaction between the particles in a dimer depending on their
relative position. We reduce the free energy of the elastic dimer-monomer (EDM)
system per lattice site in the thermodynamic limit to the moment Lyapunov
exponent (MLE) of a homogeneous Gaussian random field (GRF) whose mean value
and covariance function are the Boltzmann factors associated with the monomer
energy and dimer potential. In particular, the classical monomer-dimer problem
becomes related to the MLE of a moving average GRF. We outline an approach to
recursive computation of the partition function for "Manhattan" EDM systems
where the dimer potential is a weighted l1-distance and the auxiliary GRF is a
Markov random field of Pickard type which behaves in space like autoregressive
processes do in time. For one-dimensional Manhattan EDM systems, we compute the
MLE of the resulting Gaussian Markov chain as the largest eigenvalue of a
compact transfer operator on a Hilbert space which is related to the
annihilation and creation operators of the quantum harmonic oscillator and also
recast it as the eigenvalue problem for a pantograph functional-differential
equation.Comment: 24 pages, 4 figures, submitted on 14 October 2011 to a special issue

Cosmological Model with a Local Void: New Supernova Constraints
A simple inhomogeneous cosmological model with a local void is constrained
with the latest Union supernova compilation. To fit the supernova data, a large
local void on the scales of 1 Gpc is found, contrary to the small scales of 200
Mpc in the previous finding. A more realistic inhomogeneous cosmological model
may be required to fit the supernova data. Alternatively, a clumpy universe
with clumpiness parameter < 1 can fit the supernova data with reduced local
void scales.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, to appears in the proceedings of Particle
