Local effective dynamics of quantum systems: A generalized approach to work and heat
By computing the local energy expectation values with respect to some local
measurement basis we show that for any quantum system there are two
fundamentally different contributions: changes in energy that do not alter the
local von Neumann entropy and changes that do. We identify the former as work
and the latter as heat. Since our derivation makes no assumptions on the system
Hamiltonian or its state, the result is valid even for states arbitrarily far
from equilibrium. Examples are discussed ranging from the classical limit to
purely quantum mechanical scenarios, i.e. where the Hamiltonian and the density

Electronic properties of buried hetero-interfaces of LaAlO3 on SrTiO3
We have made very thin films of LaAlO3 on TiO2 terminated SrTiO3 and have
measured the properties of the resulting interface in various ways. Transport
measurements show a maximum sheet carrier density of 1016 cm-2 and a mobility
around 104 cm2 V-1 s-1. In situ ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS)
indicates that for these samples a finite density of states exists at the Fermi
level. From the oxygen pressure dependence measured in both transport as well
as the UPS, we detail, as reported previously by us, that oxygen vacancies play
an important role in the creation of the charge carriers and that these
vacancies are introduced by the pulsed laser deposition process used to make
the heterointerfaces. Under the conditions studied the effect of LaAlO3 on the
carrier density is found to be minimal.Comment: 19 pages, 6 figure
Epitaxy, stoichiometry, and magnetic properties of Gd-doped EuO films on YSZ (001)
We have succeeded in preparing high-quality Gd-doped single-crystalline EuO
films. Using Eu-distillation-assisted molecular beam epitaxy and a systematic
variation in the Gd and oxygen deposition rates, we have been able to observe
sustained layer-by-layer epitaxial growth on yttria-stabilized cubic zirconia
(001). The presence of Gd helps to stabilize the layer-by-layer growth mode. We
used soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Eu and Gd M4,5 edges to confirm
the absence of Eu3+ contaminants and to determine the actual Gd concentration.
The distillation process ensures the absence of oxygen vacancies in the films.
From magnetization measurements we found the Curie temperature to increase
smoothly as a function of doping from 70 K up to a maximum of 125 K. A
threshold behavior was not observed for concentrations as low as 0.2%.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figure
Exchange bias and interface electronic structure in Ni/Co3O4(011)
A detailed study of the exchange bias effect and the interfacial electronic
structure in Ni/Co3O4(011) is reported. Large exchange anisotropies are
observed at low temperatures, and the exchange bias effect persists to
temperatures well above the Neel temperature of bulk Co3O4, of about 40 K: to
~80 K for Ni films deposited on well ordered oxide surfaces, and ~150 K for Ni
films deposited on rougher Co3O4 surfaces. Photoelectron spectroscopy
measurements as a function of Ni thickness show that Co reduction and Ni
oxidation occur over an extended interfacial region. We conclude that the
exchange bias observed in Ni/Co3O4, and in similar ferromagnetic metallic/Co3O4
systems, is not intrinsic to Co3O4 but rather due to the formation of CoO at

Effects of housing, perches, genetics, and 25-hydroxycholecalciferol on keel bone deformities in laying hens
Several studies have shown a high prevalence of keel bone deformities in commercial laying hens. The aim of this project was to assess the effects of perch material, a vitamin D feed additive (25-hydroxyvitamin D3; HyD, DSM Nutritional Products, Basel, Switzerland), and genetics on keel bone pathology. The study consisted of 2 experiments. In the first experiment, 4,000 Lohmann Selected Leghorn hens were raised in aviary systems until 18 wk of age. Two factors were investigated: perch material (plastic or rubber-coated metal) and feed (with and without HyD). Afterward, the hens were moved to a layer house with 8 pens with 2 aviary systems. Daily feed consumption, egg production, mortality, and feather condition were evaluated. Every 6 wk, the keel bones of 10 randomly selected birds per pen were palpated and scored. In the second experiment, 2,000 Lohmann Brown (LB) hens and 2,000 Lohmann Brown parent stock (LBPS) hens were raised in a manner identical to the first experiment. During the laying period, the hens were kept in 24 identical floor pens but equipped with different perch material (plastic or rubber-coated metal). The same variables were investigated as in the first experiment. No keel bone deformities were found during the rearing period in either experiment. During the laying period, deformities gradually appeared and reached a prevalence of 35% in the first experiment and 43.8% in the second experiment at the age of 65 and 62 wk, respectively. In the first experiment, neither HyD nor the aviary system had any significant effect on the prevalence of keel bone deformities. In the second experiment, LBPS had significantly fewer moderate and severe deformities than LB, and rubber-coated metal perches were associated with a higher prevalence of keel bone deformities compared with plastic perches. The LBPS laid more but smaller eggs than the LB. Again, HyD did not affect the prevalence of keel bone deformities. Hereditary hydrocephalus internus in a laboratory strain of golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus)
Golden hamsters of one common laboratory strain had a high incidence of hydrocephalus internus. When a severity score of hydrocephalus was used, a major autosomal recessive locus could be identified. However, when a binary score (hydrocephalus, no hydrocephalus) was used, no such major locus could be detected and results of test matings were not consistent with Mendelian inheritance. Golden hamsters with severe forms of hydrocephalus had a dorsally compressed and ventrally intact hippocampus. Implications for the behavior and well-being of affected hamsters are unknown but researchers using this strain should be aware of the likely presence of hydrocephalu
Global and local relaxation of a spin-chain under exact Schroedinger and master-equation dynamics
We solve the Schroedinger equation for an interacting spin-chain locally
coupled to a quantum environment with a specific degeneracy structure. The
reduced dynamics of the whole spin-chain as well as of single spins is
analyzed. We show, that the total spin-chain relaxes to a thermal equilibrium
state independently of the internal interaction strength. In contrast, the
asymptotic states of each individual spin are thermal for weak but non-thermal
for stronger spin-spin coupling. The transition between both scenarios is found
for couplings of the order of , with denoting
the Zeeman-splitting. We compare these results with a master equation
treatment; when time averaged, both approaches lead to the same asymptotic
