The Problems of Acculturation: Flushing, Queens, in the Short Stories of Ha Jin Abstract: Noted author Ha Jin is often thought of as a Chinese author despite the fact that all of his writing has been written in English. Two of his later works, A Free Life (2007) and A Good Fall (2009) are set among the Chinese community in Flushing, Queens. This essay examines three short stories An English Professor, A Pension Plan, and Temporary Love from A Good Fall. In these works, Jin discusses the problems of acculturation these immigrants face, including learning English, finding employment, and dealing with forced separation. The stories depict the treacherous territory the immigrants, as well as the author himself at times, traverse as they dwell between two languages, two cultures, two literatures, two countries

On extensions of representations for compact Lie groups

Let HH be a closed normal subgroup of a compact Lie group GG such that G/HG/H is connected. This paper provides a necessary and sufficient condition for every complex representation of HH to be extendible to GG, and also for every complex GG-vector bundle over the homogeneous space G/HG/H to be trivial. In particular, we show that the condition holds when the fundamental group of G/HG/H is torsion free.Comment: 10 pages, AMS-LaTeX v1.

Characterizations of Pareto, Weibull and Power Function Distributions Based On Generalized Order Statistics

    Get PDF
Characterizations of probability distributions by different regression conditions on generalized order statistics has attracted the attention of many researchers. We present here, characterization of Pareto and Weibull distributions based on the conditional expectation of generalized order statistics extending the characterization results reported by Jin and Lee (2014). We also present a characterization of the power function distribution based on the conditional expectation of lower generalized order statistics

Generalization of matching extensions in graphs (II)

Proposed as a general framework, Liu and Yu(Discrete Math. 231 (2001) 311-320) introduced (n,k,d)(n,k,d)-graphs to unify the concepts of deficiency of matchings, nn-factor-criticality and kk-extendability. Let GG be a graph and let n,kn,k and dd be non-negative integers such that n+2k+dV(G)2n+2k+d\leq |V(G)|-2 and V(G)nd|V(G)|-n-d is even. If when deleting any nn vertices from GG, the remaining subgraph HH of GG contains a kk-matching and each such kk- matching can be extended to a defect-dd matching in HH, then GG is called an (n,k,d)(n,k,d)-graph. In \cite{Liu}, the recursive relations for distinct parameters n,kn, k and dd were presented and the impact of adding or deleting an edge also was discussed for the case d=0d = 0. In this paper, we continue the study begun in \cite{Liu} and obtain new recursive results for (n,k,d)(n,k,d)-graphs in the general case d0d \geq0.Comment: 12 page

Nonuniform viscosity in the solar nebula and large masses of Jupiter and Saturn

    Get PDF
I report a novel theory that nonuniform viscous frictional force in the solar nebula accounts for the largest mass of Jupiter and Saturn and their largest amount of H and He among the planets, two outstanding facts that are unsolved puzzles in our understanding of origin of the Solar System. It is shown that the nebula model of uniform viscosity does not match the present planet masses. By studying current known viscosity mechanisms, I show that viscosity is more efficient in the inner region inside Mercury and the outer region outside Jupiter-Saturn than the intermediate region. The more efficient viscosity drives faster radial inflow of material during the nebula evolution. Because the inflow in the outer region is faster than the intermediate region, the material tends to accumulate in Jupiter-Saturn region which is between the outer and intermediate region. It is demonstrated that the gas trapping time of Jovian planets is longer than the inflow time in the outer region. Therefore the gas already flows to Jupiter-Saturn region before Uranus and Neptune can capture significant gas. But the inflow in the Jupiter-Saturn region is so slow that they can capture large amount of gas before the gas can flow further inward. Hence they have larger masses with larger H and He content than Uranus and Neptune. I also extend the discussion to the masses of the terrestrial planets, especially low mass of Mercury. The advantages of this theory are discussed.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, A&A Letters accepte
