Recent development in organic scintillators
Discussion on recent developments of organic scintillators includes studies of organic compounds that form glass-like masses which scintillate and are stable at room temperature, correlations between molecular structure of organic scintillators and self-quenching, recently developed fast scintillators, and applications of liquid-scintillation counters
Patterned Irradiation of YBa_2Cu_3O_(7-x) Thin Films
We present a new experiment on YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x} (YBCO) thin films using
spatially resolved heavy ion irradiation. Structures consisting of a periodic
array of strong and weak pinning channels were created with the help of metal
masks. The channels formed an angle of +/-45 Deg with respect to the symmetry
axis of the photolithographically patterned structures. Investigations of the
anisotropic transport properties of these structures were performed. We found
striking resemblance to guided vortex motion as it was observed in YBCO single
crystals containing an array of unidirected twin boundaries. The use of two
additional test bridges allowed to determine in parallel the resistivities of
the irradiated and unirradiated parts as well as the respective current-voltage
characteristics. These measurements provided the input parameters for a
numerical simulation of the potential distribution of the Hall patterning. In
contrast to the unidirected twin boundaries in our experiment both strong and
weak pinning regions are spatially extended. The interfaces between
unirradiated and irradiated regions therefore form a Bose-glass contact. The
experimentally observed magnetic field dependence of the transverse voltage
vanishes faster than expected from the numerical simulation and we interpret
this as a hydrodynamical interaction between a Bose-glass phase and a vortex

Functional Bethe ansatz methods for the open XXX chain
We study the spectrum of the integrable open XXX Heisenberg spin chain
subject to non-diagonal boundary magnetic fields. The spectral problem for this
model can be formulated in terms of functional equations obtained by separation
of variables or, equivalently, from the fusion of transfer matrices. For
generic boundary conditions the eigenvalues cannot be obtained from the
solution of finitely many algebraic Bethe equations. Based on careful finite
size studies of the analytic properties of the underlying hierarchy of transfer
matrices we devise two approaches to analyze the functional equations. First we
introduce a truncation method leading to Bethe type equations determining the
energy spectrum of the spin chain. In a second approach the hierarchy of
functional equations is mapped to an infinite system of non-linear integral
equations of TBA type. The two schemes have complementary ranges of
applicability and facilitate an efficient numerical analysis for a wide range
of boundary parameters. Some data are presented on the finite size corrections
to the energy of the state which evolves into the antiferromagnetic ground

Ecological Observations on Predatory Coccinellidae (Coleoptera) in Southwestern Michigan
Ecological observations on habitat utilization by thirteen species of predatory Coccinellidae were made at a southern Michigan site during 1989 and 1990. Most of species were common during both years and used both agricul- tural and uncultivated habitats. Coccinella septempunctata and Coleomegilla maculata, were the most abundant in agricultural crops (alfalfa, maize, soy- bean and triticale), whereas Adalia bipunctata and Cycloneda munda, were the most abundant in deciduous and bushy habitats
Ab Initio Treatment of Collective Correlations and the Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay of Ca
Working with Hamiltonians from chiral effective field theory, we develop a
novel framework for describing arbitrary deformed medium-mass nuclei by
combining the in-medium similarity renormalization group with the generator
coordinate method. The approach leverages the ability of the first method to
capture dynamic correlations and the second to include collective correlations
without violating symmetries. We use our scheme to compute the matrix element
that governs the neutrinoless double beta decay of Ca to Ti, and
find it to have the value , near or below the predictions of most
phenomenological methods. The result opens the door to ab initio calculations
of the matrix elements for the decay of heavier nuclei such as Ge,

Comment to "Observation of the neutron radiative decay" by R.U. Khafizov et al., published in JETP Letters 83 (2006) 5 (Pis'ma v ZhETF 83 (2006) 7)
The commented manuscript was submitted for publication without informing at
least four of the other authors, viz. N. Severijns, O. Zimmer, H.-F. Wirth and
D. Rich. This violates our rights as collaborators. The analysis presented and
the manuscript itself have not been discussed and have also not been approved
by the entire collaboration prior to submission. Besides this formal
incorrectness, we also criticise the content of the paper
Solitonic spin-liquid state due to the violation of the Lifshitz condition in FeTe
A combination of phenomenological analysis and M\"ossbauer spectroscopy
experiments on the tetragonal FeTe system indicates that the magnetic
ordering transition in compounds with higher Fe-excess, 0.11, is
unconventional. Experimentally, a liquid-like magnetic precursor with
quasi-static spin-order is found from significantly broadened M\"ossbauer
spectra at temperatures above the antiferromagnetic transition. The
incommensurate spin-density wave (SDW) order in FeTe is described by a
magnetic free energy that violates the weak Lifshitz condition in the Landau
theory of second-order transitions. The presence of multiple Lifshitz
invariants provides the mechanism to create multidimensional, twisted, and
