Disappearance Of The Natural Emergent 3-Dimensional Oyster Reef System Of The James River, Virginia, 1871-1948
Anecdotal reports have long indicated that oysters, Crassostrea virginica (Gmelin), in the Chesapeake Bay once grew in large 3-dimensional reef structures. However, hard evidence of widespread 3-dimensional oyster reefs in the Chesapeake Bay has been scarce. This study uses data collected from historic charts of the James River, one of the most productive oyster producing tributaries of the Chesapeake Bay, to examine the natural occurrence of these reefs as well as their destruction. An early series of charts from the 1870s clearly documents widespread emergent oyster reefs in the James River from Burwell\u27s Bay to Newport News Point. They were long, fairly wide, and shoal-like and oriented at right angles to the current. A 1940s series of charts indicates that by this time nearly all of these reefs had become submerged. Paired t-tests indicate a significant decrease in reef height and volume but not in reef area. This suggests that oysters and shell have been physically removed from the reefs. This likely had a major impact on water circulation patterns over and around the reefs, which may also have further adversely affected oyster populations
Self-Regulated Learning as a Critical Attribute for Successful Teaching and Learning
The purpose of this scholarship of teaching and learning was to define and assess the level of self-regulation skills undergraduate students possess. Participants completed the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ). Through the analysis of the MSLQ, students reported having high expectations for themselves. Yet, students were found to not use cognitive learning skills and self-regulation practices consistently, which suggests a low level of self-regulation. Subsequently, students exhibit maladaptive and counterproductive behaviors like procrastination and disengagement. From this exploratory study a number of future studies were identified that have the potential for increasing the level of self-regulation in higher education
Time-Series Ensemble Photometry and the Search for Variable Stars in the Open Cluster M11
This work presents the first large-scale photometric variability survey of
the intermediate age (~200 Myr) open cluster M11. Thirteen nights of data over
two observing seasons were analyzed (using crowded field and ensemble
photometry techniques) to obtain high relative precision photometry. In this
study we focus on the detection of candidate member variable stars for
follow-up studies. A total of 39 variable stars were detected and can be
categorized as follows: 1 irregular (probably pulsating) variable, 6 delta
Scuti variables, 14 detached eclipsing binary systems, 17 W UMa variables, and
1 unidentified/candidate variable. While previous proper motion studies allow
for cluster membership determination for the brightest stars, we find that
membership determination is significantly hampered below V=15,R=15.5 by the
large population of field stars overlapping the cluster MS. Of the brightest
detected variables that have a high likelihood of cluster membership, we find
five systems where further work could help constrain theoretical stellar

Nonlinear vertical oscillations of a particle in a sheath of a rf discharge
A new simple method to measure the spatial distribution of the electric field
in the plasma sheath is proposed. The method is based on the experimental
investigation of vertical oscillations of a single particle in the sheath of a
low-pressure radio-frequency discharge. It is shown that the oscillations
become strongly nonlinear and secondary harmonics are generated as the
amplitude increases. The theory of anharmonic oscillations provides a good
qualitative description of the data and gives estimates for the first two
anharmonic terms in an expansion of the sheath potential around the particle

Competitive exclusion of Salmonella enteritidis by Salmonella gallinarum in poultry.
Salmonella Enteritidis emerged as a major egg-associated pathogen in the late 20th century. Epidemiologic data from England, Wales, and the United States indicate that S. Enteritidis filled the ecologic niche vacated by eradication of S. Gallinarum from poultry, leading to an epidemic increase in human infections. We tested this hypothesis by retrospective analysis of epidemiologic surveys in Germany and demonstrated that the number of human S. Enteritidis cases is inversely related to the prevalence of S. Gallinarum in poultry. Mathematical models combining epidemiology with population biology suggest that S. Gallinarum competitively excluded S. Enteritidis from poultry flocks early in the 20th century
