    Genomic control of patterning

    Get PDF
The development of multicellular organisms involves the partitioning of the organism into territories of cells of specific structure and function. The information for spatial patterning processes is directly encoded in the genome. The genome determines its own usage depending on stage and position, by means of interactions that constitute gene regulatory networks (GRNs). The GRN driving endomesoderm development in sea urchin embryos illustrates different regulatory strategies by which developmental programs are initiated, orchestrated, stabilized or excluded to define the pattern of specified territories in the developing embryo

Properties of developmental gene regulatory networks

    Get PDF
The modular components, or subcircuits, of developmental gene regulatory networks (GRNs) execute specific developmental functions, such as the specification of cell identity. We survey examples of such subcircuits and relate their structures to corresponding developmental functions. These relations transcend organisms and genes, as illustrated by the similar structures of the subcircuits controlling the specification of the mesectoderm in the Drosophila embryo and the endomesoderm in the sea urchin, even though the respective subcircuits are composed of nonorthologous regulatory genes

    Get PDF
The appendixes of the user manual are presented. Input forms which may be used to prepare data for the SOUP5V3.4 of the R2BCSAT-83 data base are given. The IBM job control language which can be used to run the SOUP5 system from a magnetic tape is described. Copies of a run using the delivered tape and IBM OS/MVS Job Control Language card deck are illustrated. Numerical limits on scenario data requests are listed. Error handling, error messages and editing procedures are also listed. Instructions as to how to enter a protection ratio template are given. And relation between PARC prameter, channelization, channel families, and interference categories are also listed

Time variations of the narrow FeII and HI spectral emission lines from the close vicinity of Eta Carinae during the spectral event of 2003

The spectrum of Eta Carinae and its ejecta shows slow variations over a period of 5.5 years. However, the spectrum changes drastically on a time scale of days once every period called the 'spectral event'. We report on variations in the narrow emission line spectrum of gas condensations (the Weigelt blobs) close to the central star during a spectral event. The rapid changes in the stellar radiation field illuminating the blobs make the blobs a natural astrophysical laboratory to study atomic photoprocesses. The different responses of the HI Paschen lines, fluorescent lines and forbidden [FeII] lines allow us to identify the processes and estimate physical conditions in the blobs. This paper is based on observations from the Pico dos Dias Observatory (LNA/Brazil) during the previous event in June 2003.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&

The experience of gender dysphoria for pre-pubescent children and their families: a review of the literature

    Get PDF
In recent years, the experience of gender dysphoria has gained public prominence through an explosion of sensationalised interest in the popular media. However, childhood gender dysphoria remains poorly understood and both parents and children often find themselves having to educate professionals around them. This not only creates a sense of disconnect between family and professional, but also means that social workers can often be unaware of the myriad of competing perspectives that seek to explain gender variance. This review of the literature seeks to provide interested social workers with an overview of gender dysphoria, current research in the field and theoretical paradigms, with a view to promoting understanding and better practice with families in this little understood field

Understanding the experience of parents of pre-pubescent children with gender identity issues

Whilst in recent times there has been an increasing interest in the popular media in families with gender variant children, there is still a paucity of academic research into the experience of parenting a pre-pubescent child with gender identity issues. Gender dysphoria in young children engenders emotive reactions in adults meaning that social workers need to be aware of the various discourses surrounding gender identity in order to work sensitively with families affected. This research explores highly sensitive and intimate aspects of family life, requiring parents to talk and think about difficult issues and explores how it might feel for families to parent a child with gender identity issues. The psychosocial research method of Free Association Narrative Interviews was used in order to gather the data which was then coded and analysed drawing on a constructivist version of grounded theory. Five key themes relating to the process of mourning emerged from the data: loss, uncertainty, ambivalence, being unable to think and acceptance. Recommendations for both social work and clinical practice are also offere

Unitary ambiguity in the extraction of the E2/M1 ratio for the γNΔ\gamma N\leftrightarrow\Delta transition

The resonant electric quadrupole amplitude in the transition γNΔ(1232)\gamma N\leftrightarrow\Delta(1232) is of great interest for the understanding of baryon structure. Various dynamical models have been developed to extract it from the corresponding photoproduction multipole of pions on nucleons. It is shown that once such a model is specified, a whole class of unitarily equivalent models can be constructed, all of them providing exactly the same fit to the experimental data. However, they may predict quite different resonant amplitudes. Therefore, the extraction of the E2/M1(γNΔ\gamma N\leftrightarrow\Delta) ratio (bare or dressed) which is based on a dynamical model using a largely phenomenological πN\pi N interaction is not unique.Comment: 10 pages revtex including 4 postscript figure

Comparison of Generic and Proprietary Sodium Stibogluconate for the Treatment of Visceral Leishmaniasis in Kenya.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the use of generic and proprietary sodium stibogluconate for the treatment of visceral leishmaniasis (kala-azar). METHODS: A total of 102 patients with confirmed kala-azar were treated in a mission hospital in West Pokot region, Kenya, with sodium stibogluconate (20 mg/kg/day for 30 days)--either as Pentostam (PSM) or generic sodium stibogluconate (SSG); 51 patients were allocated alternately to each treatment group. FINDINGS: There were no significant differences in baseline demographic characteristics or disease severity, or in events during treatment. There were 3 deaths in the PSM group and 1 in the SSG group; 2 patients defaulted in each group. Only 1 out of 80 test-of-cure splenic aspirates was positive for Leishmania spp.; this patient was in the SSG group. Follow-up after > or = 6 months showed that 6 out of 58 patients had relapsed, 5 in the SSG group and 1 in the PSM group. No outcome variable was significantly different between the two groups. CONCLUSION: The availability of cheaper generic sodium stibogluconate, subject to rigid quality controls, now makes it possible for the health authorities in kala-azar endemic areas to provide treatment to many more patients in Africa

Reflexivity of the translation-dilation algebras on L^2(R)

The hyperbolic algebra A_h, studied recently by Katavolos and Power, is the weak star closed operator algebra on L^2(R) generated by H^\infty(R), as multiplication operators, and by the dilation operators V_t, t \geq 0, given by V_t f(x) = e^{t/2} f(e^t x). We show that A_h is a reflexive operator algebra and that the four dimensional manifold Lat A_h (with the natural topology) is the reflexive hull of a natural two dimensional subspace.Comment: 10 pages, no figures To appear in the International Journal of Mathematic
