Semimetalic graphene in a modulated electric potential

The π\pi-electronic structure of graphene in the presence of a modulated electric potential is investigated by the tight-binding model. The low-energy electronic properties are strongly affected by the period and field strength. Such a field could modify the energy dispersions, destroy state degeneracy, and induce band-edge states. It should be noted that a modulated electric potential could make semiconducting graphene semimetallic, and that the onset period of such a transition relies on the field strength. There exist infinite Fermi-momentum states in sharply contrast with two crossing points (Dirac points) for graphene without external fields. The finite density of states (DOS) at the Fermi level means that there are free carriers, and, at the same time, the low DOS spectrum exhibits many prominent peaks, mainly owing to the band-edge states.Comment: 12pages, 5 figure

Crystallization and preliminary crystallographic analysis of the DNA gyrase B protein from B-stearothermophilus

    Get PDF
DNA gyrase B (GyrB) from B. stearothermophilus has been crystallized in the presence of the non-hydrolyzable ATP analogue, 5'-adenylpl-beta-gamma-imidodiphosphate (ADPNP), by the dialysis method. A complete native data set to 3.7 Angstrom has been collected from crystals which belonged to the cubic space group I23 with unit-cell dimension a = 250.6 Angstrom. Self-rotation function analysis indicates the position of a molecular twofold axis. Low-resolution data sets of a thimerosal and a selenomethionine derivative have also been analysed. The heavy-atom positions are consistent with one dimer in the asymmetric unit

Detection of mechanical resonance of a single-electron transistor by direct current

We have suspended an Al based single-electron transistor whose island can resonate freely between the source and drain leads forming the clamps. In addition to the regular side gate, a bottom gate with a larger capacitance to the SET island is placed underneath to increase the SET coupling to mechanical motion. The device can be considered as a doubly clamped Al beam that can transduce mechanical vibrations into variations of the SET current. Our simulations based on the orthodox model, with the SET parameters estimated from the experiment, reproduce the observed transport characteristics in detail.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

Enhancement of Si-O hybridization in low-temperature grown ultraviolet photo-oxided SiO2 film observed by x-ray absorption and photoemission spectroscopy

100學年度杜昭宏升等參考著作[[abstract]]The dielectric properties associated with the electronic and bonding structures of SiO2 films were examined using the Si L3,2- and O K-edge x-ray absorption near-edge structures (XANES) and valence-band photoemission spectroscopy (VB-PES) techniques. The Si L3,2- and O K-edge XANES measurements for the low-temperature grown UV-photon oxidized SiO2 (UV-SiO2) and the conventional high-temperature thermal-oxidized SiO2 (TH-SiO2) suggest enhancement of O 2p–Si 3p hybridization in UV-SiO2. VB-PES measurements reveal enhancement of nonbonding O 2p and O 2p–Si 3p hybridized states. The enhanced O 2p and Si 3p hybridization implies a shortening of the average Si–O bond length, which explains an increase of the density and the improvement of the dielectric property of UV-SiO2.[[notice]]補正完畢[[incitationindex]]SCI[[booktype]]紙

Parity effect in Al and Nb single electron transistors in a tunable environment

    Get PDF
Two different types of Cooper pair transistors, with Al and Nb islands, have been investigated in a tunable electromagnetic environment. The device with an Al island demonstrates gate charge modulation with 2e-periodicity in a wide range of environmental impedances at bath temperatures below 340 mK. Contrary to the results of the Al sample, we were not able to detect 2e-periodicity under any conditions on similar samples with Nb island. We attribute this to the material properties of Nb.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figure

Electronic and bonding structures of amorphous Si–C–N thin films by x-ray absorption spectroscopy

[[abstract]]X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectra of hard amorphous a-Si–C–N thin films with various compositions were measured at the C and N K-edge using sample drain current and fluorescent modes. The C K-edge XANES spectra of a-Si–C–N contain a relatively large 1s→π∗ peak, indicating that a substantial percentage of carbon atoms in the a-Si–C–N films have sp2 or graphite-like bonding. Both the observed sp2 intensity and the Young’s modulus decrease with an increase in the carbon content. For N K-edge XANES spectra of the a-Si–C–N films we find the emergence of a sharp peak near the threshold when the carbon content is larger than between 9% and 36%, which indicates that carbon and nitrogen atoms tend to form local graphitic carbon nitride.[[booktype]]紙

On-site detection of equid alphaherpesvirus 3 in perineal and genital swabs of mares and stallions

Equine coital exanthema (ECE) is an infectious, venereally transmitted muco-cutaneous disease affecting mares and stallions, caused by equid alphaherpesvirus 3 (EHV3). Diagnostic tools for rapid identification of EHV3 are of primary importance to diminish the risk of EHV3 dissemination at the time of breeding. In the last years, it has been shown that the performance of the insulated-isothermal polymerase chain reaction (iiPCR) is comparable to virus isolation, nested PCR and real-time PCR (qPCR) in detecting pathogens of various animal species. Analytical sensitivity and specificity of the iiPCR were compared with a qPCR, using a plasmid containing the target region of the EHV3 glycoprotein G gene and an Argentinian EHV3 isolate (E/9283/07 C3A). In order to evaluate the diagnostic performance of the iiPCR, nucleic acids of 85 perineal and genital swabs (PGS) of mares and stallions were extracted by tacoTM mini and tested by both techniques. EHV3 was detected in 46 and 45 of the 85 PGS by the iiPCR and qPCR, respectively. There was almost perfect agreement between the two diagnostic methods (98.82%; 95% CI: 95.03–100%; κ = 0.98). The iiPCR had a limit of detection of 95.00% at 6 genome equivalents per reaction and a detection endpoint for viral DNA comparable to that of the qPCR, and did not react with six non-targeted equine pathogens. The iiPCR represents a sensitive and specific method for the rapid on-site diagnosis of EHV3 infection. Its routinely implementation in breeding facilities, and artificial insemination and embryo transfer centers, will contribute to prevent the dissemination of this venereal, highly contagious disease in horses.Fil: Vissani, María Aldana. Broken time-reversal symmetry in Josephson junction involving two-band superconductors

A novel time-reversal symmetry breaking state is found theoretically in the Josephson junction between the two-gap superconductor and the conventional s-wave superconductor. This occurs due to the frustration between the three order parameters analogous to the two antiferromagnetically coupled XY-spins put under a magnetic field. This leads to the interface states with the energies inside the superconducting gap. Possible experimental observations of this state with broken time-reversal symmetry are discussed.Comment: 9 pages, 1 figur
