Conceptual design study of advanced acoustic-composite nacelles
Conceptual studies were conducted to assess the impact of incorporating advanced technologies in the nacelles of a current wide-bodied transport and an advanced technology transport. The improvement possible in the areas of fuel consumption, flyover noise levels, airplane weight, manufacturing costs, and airplane operating cost were evaluated for short and long-duct nacelles. Use of composite structures for acoustic duct linings in the fan inlet and exhaust ducts was considered as well as for other nacelle components. For the wide-bodied transport, the use of a long-duct nacelle with an internal mixer nozzle in the primary exhaust showed significant improvement in installed specific fuel consumption and airplane direct operating costs compared to the current short-duct nacelle. The long-duct mixed-flow nacelle is expected to achieve significant reductions in jet noise during takeoff and in turbo-machinery noise during landing approach. Recommendations were made of the technology development needed to achieve the potential fuel conservation and noise reduction benefits
Effect of Al mole fraction on carrier diffusion lengths and lifetimes in AlxGa1âxAs
The ambipolar diffusion length and carrier lifetime are measured in AlxGa1âxAs for several mole fractions in the interval 0<x<0.38. These parameters are found to have significantly higher values in the higher mole fraction samples. These increases are attributed to occupation of states in the indirect valleys, and supporting calculations are presented
Quasienergy Spectroscopy of Excitons
We theoretically study nonlinear optics of excitons under intense THz
irradiation. In particular, the linear near infrared absorption and resonantly
enhanced nonlinear sideband generation are described. We predict a rich
structure in the spectra which can be interpreted in terms of the quasienergy
spectrum of the exciton, via a remarkably transparent expression for the
susceptibility, and show that the effects of strongly avoided quasienergy
crossings manifest themselves directly, both in the absorption and transmitted
sidebands.Comment: 4 pages RevTex, 3 eps figs included, as publishe
Casimir force in brane worlds: coinciding results from Green's and Zeta function approaches
Casimir force encodes the structure of the field modes as vacuum fluctuations
and so it is sensitive to the extra dimensions of brane worlds. Now, in flat
spacetimes of arbitrary dimension the two standard approaches to the Casimir
force, Green's function and zeta function, yield the same result, but for brane
world models this was only assumed. In this work we show both approaches yield
the same Casimir force in the case of Universal Extra Dimensions and
Randall-Sundrum scenarios with one and two branes added by p compact
dimensions. Essentially, the details of the mode eigenfunctions that enter the
Casimir force in the Green's function approach get removed due to their
orthogonality relations with a measure involving the right hyper-volume of the
plates and this leaves just the contribution coming from the Zeta function
approach. The present analysis corrects previous results showing a difference
between the two approaches for the single brane Randall-Sundrum; this was due
to an erroneous hyper-volume of the plates introduced by the authors when using
the Green's function. For all the models we discuss here, the resulting Casimir
force can be neatly expressed in terms of two four dimensional Casimir force
contributions: one for the massless mode and the other for a tower of massive
modes associated with the extra dimensions.Comment: 30 pages, title, abstract and discussion have change
A double-lined spectroscopic orbit for the young star HD 34700
We report high-resolution spectroscopic observations of the young star HD
34700, which confirm it to be a double-lined spectroscopic binary. We derive an
accurate orbital solution with a period of 23.4877 +/- 0.0013 days and an
eccentricity of e = 0.2501 +/- 0.0068. The stars are found to be of similar
mass (M2/M1 = 0.987 +/- 0.014) and luminosity. We derive also the effective
temperatures (5900 K and 5800 K) and projected rotational velocities (28 km/s
and 22 km/s) of the components. These values of v sin i are much higher than
expected for main-sequence stars of similar spectral type (G0), and are not due
to tidal synchronization. We discuss also the indicators of youth available for
the object. Although there is considerable evidence that the system is young
--strong infrared excess, X-ray emission, Li I 6708 absorption (0.17 Angstroms
equivalent width), H alpha emission (0.6 Angstroms), rapid rotation-- the
precise age cannot yet be established because the distance is unknown.Comment: 17 pages, including 2 figures and 2 tables. Accepted for publication

Impact of exercise interventions on physical fitness in breast cancer patients and survivors: a systematic review
Background: This systematic review aims to identify the effects of exercise interventions in patients with breast cancer (BCP) and survivors (BCS) on selected variables of physical fitness. Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted using Medline and Scopus. Randomized controlled trials with isolated exercise interventions in BCP and BCS women (< 5 years from therapy completion) were included. The risk of bias (RoB) assessment was conducted using the Cochrane RoB-2-tool. Variables regarding cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), strength (ST), fatigue (F) and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) were discussed. Results: Of the 336 studies initially identified, 22 met all the inclusion criteria and were deemed eligible. RoB assessment indicated that the studies had predominantly âsome concernsâ or had âlow RoBâ, with only 3 studies presenting a âhigh RoBâ. The mean duration and frequency of exercise interventions were 19 weeks and 3 sessions/week, performed at moderate intensity (65% VO2max and 66% 1RM, for aerobic and resistance-training interventions, respectively). Conclusions: Exercise interventions seem to be a valuable strategy in BCP to avoid the decline of CRF, ST, F and HRQoL. Conversely, improved physical function among BCS is observed for the same variables. Resistance training and combined interventions seem to provide the most encouraging variations of the selected outcomes. PROSPERO registration ID: CRD42021237917
The causal structure of dynamical charged black holes
We study the causal structure of dynamical charged black holes, with a
sufficient number of massless fields, using numerical simulations. Neglecting
Hawking radiation, the inner horizon is a null Cauchy horizon and a curvature
singularity due to mass inflation. When we include Hawking radiation, the inner
horizon becomes space-like and is separated from the Cauchy horizon, which is
parallel to the out-going null direction. Since a charged black hole must
eventually transit to a neutral black hole, we studied the neutralization of
the black hole and observed that the inner horizon evolves into a space-like
singularity, generating a Cauchy horizon which is parallel to the in-going null
direction. Since the mass function is finite around the inner horizon, the
inner horizon is regular and penetrable in a general relativistic sense.
However, since the curvature functions become trans-Planckian, we cannot
saymore about the region beyond the inner horizon, and it is natural to say
that there is a 'physical' space-like singularity. However, if we assume an
exponentially large number of massless scalar fields, our results can be
extended beyond the inner horizon. In this case, strong cosmic censorship and
black hole complementarity can be violated.Comment: 23 pages, 23 figure
A Study of the B-V Colour Temperature Relation
We attempt to construct a B-V colour temperature relation for stars in the
least model dependent way employing the best modern data. The fit we obtained
with the form Teff = Teff((B-V)0,[Fe/H],log g) is well constrained and a number
of tests show the consistency of the procedures for the fit. Our relation
covers from F0 to K5 stars with metallicity [Fe/H] = -1.5 to +0.3 for both
dwarfs and giants. The residual of the fit is 66 K, which is consistent with
what are expected from the quality of the present data. Metallicity and surface
gravity effects are well separated from the colour dependence. Dwarfs and
giants match well in a single family of fit, differing only in log g. The fit
also detects the Galactic extinction correction for nearby stars with the
amount E(B-V) = 0.26 +/-0.03 mag/kpc. Taking the newly obtained relation as a
reference we examine a number of B-V colour temperature relations and
atmosphere models available in the literature. We show the presence of a
systematic error in the colour temperature relation from synthetic calculations
of model atmospheres; the systematic error across K0 to K5 dwarfs is 0.04-0.05
mag in B-V, which means 0.25-0.3 mag in Mv for the K star range. We also argue
for the error in the temperature scale used in currently popular stellar
population synthesis models; synthetic colours from these models are somewhat
too blue for aged elliptical galaxies. We derive the colour index of the sun
(B-V)sun = 0.627 +/-0.018, and discuss that redder colours (e.g., 0.66-0.67)
often quoted in the literature are incompatible with the colour-temperature
relation.Comment: AASLaTeX (aaspp4.sty),36 pages (13 figures included), submitted to

Linear optical absorption spectra of mesoscopic structures in intense THz fields: free particle properties
We theoretically study the effect of THz radiation on the linear optical
absorption spectra of semiconductor structures. A general theoretical
framework, based on non-equilibrium Green functions, is formulated, and applied
to the calculation of linear optical absorption spectrum for several
non-equilibrium mesoscopic structures. We show that a blue-shift occurs and
sidebands appear in bulk-like structures, i.e., the dynamical Franz-Keldysh
effect [A.-P. Jauho and K. Johnsen, Phys. Rev. Lett. 76, 4576 (1996)]. An
analytic calculation leads to the prediction that in the case of superlattices
distinct stable steps appear in the absorption spectrum when conditions for
dynamical localization are met.Comment: 13 Pages, RevTex using epsf to include 8 ps figures. Submitted to

The Machine Learning Landscape of Top Taggers
Based on the established task of identifying boosted, hadronically decaying
top quarks, we compare a wide range of modern machine learning approaches.
Unlike most established methods they rely on low-level input, for instance
calorimeter output. While their network architectures are vastly different,
their performance is comparatively similar. In general, we find that these new
approaches are extremely powerful and great fun.Comment: Yet another tagger included
