    The Density Profile of Cluster-scale Dark Matter Halos

    We measure the average gravitational shear profile of 6 massive clusters (M_vir ~ 10^15 M_sun) at z=0.3 out to a radius ~2h^-1 Mpc. The measurements are fitted to a generalized NFW-like halo model \rho(r) with an arbitrary r -> 0 slope \alpha. The data are well fitted by such a model with a central cusp with \alpha ~ 0.9 - 1.6 (68% confidence interval). For the standard-NFW case \alpha = 1.0, we find a concentration parameter c_vir that is consistent with recent predictions from high-resolution CDM N-body simulations. Our data are also well fitted by an isothermal sphere model with a softened core. For this model, our 1\sigma upper limit for the core radius corresponds to a limit \sigma_star \leq 0.1 cm^2 g^-1 on the elastic collision cross-section in a self-interacting dark matter model.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures; version accepted for publication by ApJ Letters. Bounds on the content of cold and hot dark matter from cosmological observations are discussed in some detail.     Computational protein profile similarity screening for quantitative mass spectrometry experiments

    Motivation: The qualitative and quantitative characterization of protein abundance profiles over a series of time points or a set of environmental conditions is becoming increasingly important. Using isobaric mass tagging experiments, mass spectrometry-based quantitative proteomics deliver accurate peptide abundance profiles for relative quantitation. Associated data analysis workflows need to provide tailored statistical treatment that (i) takes the correlation structure of the normalized peptide abundance profiles into account and (ii) allows inference of protein-level similarity. We introduce a suitable distance measure for relative abundance profiles, derive a statistical test for equality and propose a protein-level representation of peptide-level measurements. This yields a workflow that delivers a similarity ranking of protein abundance profiles with respect to a defined reference. All procedures have in common that they operate based on the true correlation structure that underlies the measurements. This optimizes power and delivers more intuitive and efficient results than existing methods that do not take these circumstances into account. Results: We use protein profile similarity screening to identify candidate proteins whose abundances are post-transcriptionally controlled by the Anaphase Promoting Complex/Cyclosome (APC/C), a specific E3 ubiquitin ligase that is a master regulator of the cell cycle. Results are compared with an established protein correlation profiling method. The proposed procedure yields a 50.9-fold enrichment of co-regulated protein candidates and a 2.5-fold improvement over the previous method

    Stochastic optimization methods for extracting cosmological parameters from CMBR power spectra

    The reconstruction of the CMBR power spectrum from a map represents a major computational challenge to which much effort has been applied. However, once the power spectrum has been recovered there still remains the problem of extracting cosmological parameters from it. Doing this involves optimizing a complicated function in a many dimensional parameter space. Therefore efficient algorithms are necessary in order to make this feasible. We have tested several different types of algorithms and found that the technique known as simulated annealing is very effective for this purpose. It is shown that simulated annealing is able to extract the correct cosmological parameters from a set of simulated power spectra, but even with such fast optimization algorithms, a substantial computational effort is needed.Comment: 7 pages revtex, 3 figures, to appear in PR

    New constraints on neutrino physics from Boomerang data

    We have performed a likelihood analysis of the recent data on the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation (CMBR) anisotropy taken by the Boomerang experiment. We find that this data places a strong upper bound on the radiation density present at recombination. Expressed in terms of the equivalent number of neutrino species the 2σ2\sigma bound is N_nu < 13, and the standard model prediction, N_nu = 3.04, is completely consistent the the data. This bound is complementary to the one found from Big Bang nucleosynthesis considerations in that it applies to any type of radiation, i.e. it is not flavour sensitive. It also applies to the universe at a much later epoch, and as such places severe limits on scenarios with decaying neutrinos. The bound also yields a firm upper limit on the lepton asymmetry in the universe.Comment: 4 pages, 2 postscript figures, matches version to appear in PR

    Green tea halts progression of cardiac transthyretin amyloidosis: an observational report

    BACKGROUND: Treatment options in patients with amyloidotic transthyretin (ATTR) cardiomyopathy are limited. Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), the most abundant catechin in green tea (GT), inhibits fibril formation from several amyloidogenic proteins in vitro. Thus, it might also halt progression of TTR amyloidosis. This is a single-center observational report on the effects of GT consumption in patients with ATTR cardiomopathy. METHODS: 19 patients with ATTR cardiomyopathy were evaluated by standard blood tests, echocardiography, and cardiac MRI (n = 9) before and after consumption of GT and/or green tea extracts (GTE) for 12 months. RESULTS: Five patients were not followed up for reasons of death (n = 2), discontinuation of GT/GTE consumption (n = 2), and heart transplantation (n = 1). After 12 months no increase of left ventricular (LV) wall thickness and LV myocardial mass was observed by echocardiography. In the subgroup of patients evaluated by cardiac MRI a mean decrease of LV myocardial mass (-12.5 %) was detected in all patients. This was accompanied by an increase of mean mitral annular systolic velocity of 9 % in all 14 patients. Total cholesterol (191.9 ± 8.9 vs. 172.7 ± 9.4 mg/dL; p < 0.01) and LDL cholesterol (105.8 ± 7.6 vs. 89.5 ± 8.0 mg/dL; p < 0.01) decreased significantly during the observational period. No serious adverse effects were reported by any of the participants. CONCLUSIONS: Our observation suggests an inhibitory effect of GT and/or GTE on the progression of cardiac amyloidosis.     Cosmological limit on the neutrino mass

    We have performed a careful analysis of constraints on the neutrino mass from current cosmological data. Combining data from the cosmic microwave background and the 2dF galaxy survey yields an upper limit on the sum of the three neutrino mass eigenstates of \sum m_nu < 3 eV (95% conf.), without including additional priors. Including data from SNIa observations, Big Bang nucleosynthesis, and HST Hubble key project data on H_0 tightens the limit to \sum m_nu < 2.5 eV (95% conf.).     This article discusses how the study of metaphoric and more generally, figurative language use contributes to critical discourse analysis (CDA). It shows how cognitive linguists’ recognition of metaphor as a fundamental means of concept- and argument-building can add to CDA's account of meaning constitution in the social context. It then discusses discrepancies between the early model of conceptual metaphor theory and empirical data and argues that discursive-pragmatic factors as well as sociolinguistic variation have to be taken into account in order to make cognitive analyses more empirically and socially relevant. In conclusion, we sketch a modified cognitive approach informed by Relevance Theory within CDA

    Neutrino masses and the number of neutrino species from WMAP and 2dFGRS

    We have performed a thorough analysis of the constraints which can be put on neutrino parameters from cosmological observations, most notably those from the WMAP satellite and the 2dF galaxy survey. For this data we find an upper limit on the sum of active neutrino mass eigenstates of \sum m_nu < 1.0 eV (95% conf.), but this limit is dependent on priors. We find that the WMAP and 2dF data alone cannot rule out the evidence from neutrinoless double beta decay reported by the Heidelberg-Moscow experiment. In terms of the relativistic energy density in neutrinos or other weakly interacting species we find, in units of the equivalent number of neutrino species, N_nu, that N_nu = 4.0+3.0-2.1 (95% conf.). When BBN constraints are added, the bound on N_\nu is 2.6+0.4-0.3 (95% conf.), suggesting that N_nu could possibly be lower than the standard model value of 3. This can for instance be the case in models with very low reheating temperature and incomplete neutrino thermalization. Conversely, if N_nu is fixed to 3 then the data from WMAP and 2dFGRS predicts that 0.2458 < Y_P < 0.2471, which is significantly higher than the observationally measured value. The limit on relativistic energy density changes when a small νe\nu_e chemical potential is present during BBN. In this case the upper bound on N_nu from WMAP, 2dFGRS and BBN is N_nu < 6.5. Finally, we find that a non-zero \sum m_nu can be compensated by an increase in N_nu. One result of this is that the LSND result is not yet ruled out by cosmological observations.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figure
