Lagrangian statistics in unforced barotropic flows
We consider the dispersion of particles in potential vorticity (PV)-conserving flows. Because particle drift is preferentially along the mean PV contours, Lagrangian dispersion is strongly anisotropic. If the mean PV field moreover is spatially variable, as when there is topography, the anisotropy is more clearly visible in the dispersion of displacements along and across the mean PV field itself. We examine several numerical examples of unforced barotropic flows; in all cases, this projected dispersion is more anisotropic than that in cartesian (x, y) coordinates. What differs is the rate at which spreading occurs, both along and across contours. The method is applicable to real data, as is illustrated with float data from the deep North Atlantic. The results suggest a preferential spreading along contours of (barotropic) f/H

Location of the Lee-Yang zeros and absence of phase transitions in some Ising spin systems
We consider a class of Ising spin systems on a set \Lambda of sites. The
sites are grouped into units with the property that each site belongs to either
one or two units, and the total internal energy of the system is the sum of the
energies of the individual units, which in turn depend only on the number of up
spins in the unit. We show that under suitable conditions on these interactions
none of the |\Lambda| Lee-Yang zeros in the complex z = exp{2\beta h} plane,
where \beta is the inverse temperature and h the uniform magnetic field, touch
the positive real axis, at least for large values of \beta. In some cases one
obtains, in an appropriately taken \beta to infinity limit, a gas of hard
objects on a set \Lambda'; the fugacity for the limiting system is a rescaling
of z and the Lee-Yang zeros of the new partition function also avoid the
positive real axis. For certain forms of the energies of the individual units
the Lee-Yang zeros of both the finite- and zero-temperature systems lie on the
negative real axis for all \beta. One zero-temperature limit of this type, for
example, is a monomer-dimer system; our results thus generalize, to finite
\beta, a well-known result of Heilmann and Lieb that the Lee-Yang zeros of
monomer-dimer systems are real and negative.Comment: Plain TeX. Seventeen pages, five figures from .eps files. Version 2

Research Notes : Australia : Designation of a core collection of perennial Glycine
Over the last decade, a large germplasm collection of the 12 currently recognized perennial species of Glycine has been assembled. This collection, now numbering more than 1400 accessions, is held in Canberra, Australia, and is recognized by the International Board of Plant Genetic Resources as the world base collection for perennial Glycine. The 12 species include five that have been described recently
Learning common sense knowledge from user interaction and principal component analysis
Thesis (M. Eng.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2007.This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Includes bibliographical references (p. 107-110).In this thesis, I present a system for reasoning with common sense knowledge in multiple natural languages, as part of the Open Mind Common Sense project. The knowledge that Open Mind collects from volunteer contributors is represented as a semantic network called ConceptNet. Using principal component analysis on the graph structure of ConceptNet yields AnalogySpace, a vector space representation of common sense knowledge. This representation reveals large-scale patterns in the data, while smoothing over noise, and predicts new knowledge that the database should contain. The inferred knowledge, which a user survey shows is often correct, is used as part of a feedback loop that shows contributors what the system is learning and guides them to contribute useful new knowledge.by Robert Speer.M.Eng
The One-loop UV Divergent Structure of U(1) Yang-Mills Theory on Noncommutative R^4
We show that U(1) Yang-Mills theory on noncommutative R^4 can be renormalized
at the one-loop level by multiplicative dimensional renormalization of the
coupling constant and fields of the theory. We compute the beta function of the
theory and conclude that the theory is asymptotically free. We also show that
the Weyl-Moyal matrix defining the deformed product over the space of functions
on R^4 is not renormalized at the one-loop level.Comment: 8 pages. A missing complex "i" is included in the field strength and
the divergent contributions corrected accordingly. As a result the model
turns out to be asymptotically fre
Spectral Degeneracies in the Totally Asymmetric Exclusion Process
We study the spectrum of the Markov matrix of the totally asymmetric
exclusion process (TASEP) on a one-dimensional periodic lattice at ARBITRARY
filling. Although the system does not possess obvious symmetries except
translation invariance, the spectrum presents many multiplets with degeneracies
of high order. This behaviour is explained by a hidden symmetry property of the
Bethe Ansatz. Combinatorial formulae for the orders of degeneracy and the
corresponding number of multiplets are derived and compared with numerical
results obtained from exact diagonalisation of small size systems. This
unexpected structure of the TASEP spectrum suggests the existence of an
underlying large invariance group.
