    Robust single-parameter quantized charge pumping

    This paper investigates a scheme for quantized charge pumping based on single-parameter modulation. The device was realized in an AlGaAs-GaAs gated nanowire. We find a remarkable robustness of the quantized regime against variations in the driving signal, which increases with applied rf power.     Approximate quantum data storage and teleportation

    In this paper we present an optimal protocol by which an unknown state on a Hilbert space of dimension NN can be approximately stored in an MM-dimensional quantum system or be approximately teleported via an MM-dimensional quantum channel. The fidelity of our procedure is determined for pure states as well as for mixed states and states which are entangled with auxiliary quantum systems of varying Hilbert space dimension, and it is compared with theoretical results for the maximally achievable fidelity.Comment: More detailed discussion of teleportation of entangled and mixed states.     Molecular beam epitaxy of high structural quality Bi2Se3 on lattice matched InP(111) substrates

    Epitaxial layers of the topological insulator Bi2Se3 have been grown by molecular beam epitaxy on laterally lattice-matched InP(111)B substrates. High resolution X-ray diffraction shows a significant improvement of Bi2Se3 crystal quality compared to layers deposited on other substrates. The measured full width at half maximum of the rocking curve is Delta omega=13 arcsec, and the (omega-2theta) scans exhibit clear layer thickness fringes. Atomic force microscope images show triangular twin domains with sizes increasing with layer thickness. The structural quality of the domains is confirmed on the microscopic level by transmission electron microscopy.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Positivity of relative canonical bundles and applications

    Given a family f:X→Sf:\mathcal X \to S of canonically polarized manifolds, the unique K\"ahler-Einstein metrics on the fibers induce a hermitian metric on the relative canonical bundle KX/S\mathcal K_{\mathcal X/S}. We use a global elliptic equation to show that this metric is strictly positive on X\mathcal X, unless the family is infinitesimally trivial. For degenerating families we show that the curvature form on the total space can be extended as a (semi-)positive closed current. By fiber integration it follows that the generalized Weil-Petersson form on the base possesses an extension as a positive current. We prove an extension theorem for hermitian line bundles, whose curvature forms have this property. This theorem can be applied to a determinant line bundle associated to the relative canonical bundle on the total space. As an application the quasi-projectivity of the moduli space Mcan\mathcal M_{\text{can}} of canonically polarized varieties follows. The direct images Rn−pf∗ΩX/Sp(KX/S⊗m)R^{n-p}f_*\Omega^p_{\mathcal X/S}(\mathcal K_{\mathcal X/S}^{\otimes m}), m>0m > 0, carry natural hermitian metrics. We prove an explicit formula for the curvature tensor of these direct images. We apply it to the morphisms SpTS→Rpf∗ΛpTX/SS^p \mathcal T_S \to R^pf_*\Lambda^p\mathcal T_{\mathcal X/S} that are induced by the Kodaira-Spencer map and obtain a differential geometric proof for hyperbolicity properties of Mcan\mathcal M_{\text{can}}.Comment: Supercedes arXiv:0808.3259v4 and arXiv:1002.4858v2.     Tunable sub-luminal propagation of narrowband x-ray pulses

    Group velocity control is demonstrated for x-ray photons of 14.4 keV energy via a direct measurement of the temporal delay imposed on spectrally narrow x-ray pulses. Sub-luminal light propagation is achieved by inducing a steep positive linear dispersion in the optical response of 57{}^{57}Fe M\"ossbauer nuclei embedded in a thin film planar x-ray cavity. The direct detection of the temporal pulse delay is enabled by generating frequency-tunable spectrally narrow x-ray pulses from broadband pulsed synchrotron radiation.     Building multiparticle states with teleportation

    We describe a protocol which can be used to generate any N-partite pure quantum state using Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) pairs. This protocol employs only local operations and classical communication between the N parties (N-LOCC). In particular, we rely on quantum data compression and teleportation to create the desired state. This protocol can be used to obtain upper bounds for the bipartite entanglement of formation of an arbitrary N-partite pure state, in the asymptotic limit of many copies. We apply it to a few multipartite states of interest, showing that in some cases it is not optimal. Generalizations of the protocol are developed which are optimal for some of the examples we consider, but which may still be inefficient for arbitrary states.Comment: 11 pages, 1 figure.
