    The rule labeling heuristic aims to establish confluence of (left-)linear term rewrite systems via decreasing diagrams. We present a formalization of a confluence criterion based on the interplay of relative termination and the rule labeling in the theorem prover Isabelle. Moreover, we report on the integration of this result into the certifier CeTA, facilitating the checking of confluence certificates based on decreasing diagrams. The power of the method is illustrated by an experimental evaluation on a (standard) collection of confluence problems

    Pulsational pair-instability and the mass gap of Population III Black Holes: Effects of overshooting

    Since the discovery of GW190521, several proposals have been put forward to explain the formation of a black hole in the mass gap caused by (pulsational) pair-instability, M=65−130M⊙M = 65-130 M_\odot. We calculate the mass ejection of Pop III stars by the pulsational pair-instability (PPI) process using a stellar evolution and hydrodynamical code. If a relatively small, but reasonable value is adopted for the overshooting parameter, the stars do not become red super giants during the PPI phase. We show that in this case most of the hydrogen envelope remains after the mass ejection by PPI. We find that the BH mass could be at most M=109M⊙M = 109 M_\odot below the mass range of pair-instability supernovae

    Collapse of \sim 10^4 M_\odot population III supermassive stars with neutrino transfer

    We calculate the neutrino signal from Population III supermassive star collapse using a neutrino transfer code originally developed for core collapse supernovae and massive star collapse. Using this code, we are able to investigate the supermassive star mass range thought to undergo neutrino trapping (∼104\sim 10^4 M⊙_\odot), a mass range which has been neglected by previous works because of the difficulty of neutrino transfer. For models in this mass range, we observe a neutrino-sphere with a large radius and low density compared to typical massive star neutrino-spheres. We calculate the neutrino light-curve emitted from this neutrino-sphere. The resulting neutrino luminosity is significantly lower than the results of a previous analytical model. We briefly discuss the possibility of detecting a neutrino burst from a supermassive star or the neutrino background from many supermassive stars and conclude that the former is unlikely with current technology, unless the SMS collapse is located as close as 1 Mpc, while the latter is also unlikely even under very generous assumptions. However, the supermassive star neutrino background is still of interest as it may serve as a source of noise in proposed dark matter direct detection experiments

    Interactive Audio Augmented Reality in Participatory Performance

    Interactive Audio Augmented Reality (AAR) facilitates collaborative storytelling and human interaction in participatory performance. Spatial audio enhances the auditory environment and supports real-time control of media content and the experience. Nevertheless, AAR applied to interactive performance practices remains under-explored. This study examines how audio human-computer interaction can prompt and support actions, and how AAR can contribute to developing new kinds of interactions in participatory performance.This study investigates an AAR participatory performance based on the theater and performance practice by theater maker Augusto Boal. It draws from aspects of multi-player audio-only games and interactive storytelling. A user experience study of the performance shows that people are engaged with interactive content and interact and navigate within the spatial audio content using their whole body. Asymmetric audio cues, playing distinctive content for each participant, prompt verbal and non-verbal communication. The performative aspect was well-received and participants took on roles and responsibilities within their group during the experience

    Rescaled mean spherical approximation for colloidal mixtures

    In this work, the rescaled mean spherical approximation (RMSA) for colloidal mixtures interacting via a DLVO-type potential is developed, and its application to suspensions of highly charged macroions is illustrated. For this purpose we introduce a simple scheme to solve the mean spherical approximation (MSA) for Yukawa mixtures with factorized coupling parameters. This scheme consists of the mapping of the Yukawa system onto a corresponding primitive model system. Such a correspondence is used as a device for the calculation of the static structure functions of the original Yukawa mixture. Within this scheme, a straightforward implementation of the rescaling procedure is performed, which allows for the calculation of partial structure factors in strongly interacting mixtures. The rescaling procedure we use is an extension of that introduced by Hansen and Hayter for monodisperse suspensions. The structure factors obtained with the rescaled mean spherical approximation compare well with computer simulation results.     Atrial fibrillation and treatment changes in cryptogenic stroke patients with an implantable loop recorder for continuous cardiac rhythm monitoring

    Introduction: This interim analysis evaluates the risk profile and incidence of atrial fibrillation (AF) in patients who underwent continuous monitoring with an implantable loop recorder (ILR) for cryptogenic (unexplained) stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA). Methods: The observational INSIGHT XT study prospectively enrolled patients who received an ILR with dedicated diagnostics for atrial fibrillation, irrespective of the clinical indication. Of 1002 patients enrolled in the study between Aug 2008 and Jan 2012, 121 received the ILR to evaluate cryptogenic stroke or TIA. The definition of cryptogenic stroke/TIA was at the investigators' appraisal and no unified approach to patient work-up was required. This analysis includes 74 patients with cryptogenic stroke or TIA for whom at least one follow-up visit was available at the time of interim analysis. Results: The mean age was 63±12 (50% female). Stroke was the index event in 46 of 74 (62%) of patients. 61% had hypertension, 14% diabetes, and none had heart failure. The mean CHADS2 score was 3.0±0.8 and the mean CHA2DS2VASc score 4.0±1.2. Most patients (72%) had no prior symptoms or cardiac rhythm disturbances, whereas 18% had a history of prior palpitations. Sixty-seven patients were taking antiplatelet medication and four were on oral anticoagulation (OAC) at enrollment. During a median follow up of 12 months (IQR 7 to 18) AF was reported in 17 patients (23%) and two patients were started on OAC and 10 patients were converted from antiplatelets to OAC. Five patients experienced a stroke or TIA (median time to event 1.2 months), of which one patient died. Three of the patients with stroke or TIA had AF detected prior to the recurrent event. Conclusion: Continuous monitoring with an ILR in patients with cryptogenic stroke of TIA detects a high proportion of AF; this can be attributed to longer continuous monitoring in this study. These patients have high CHADS2/CHA2DS2VASc scores; documenting AF in these cases may therefore be clinically relevant in order to decide appropriate treatment

    Low-energy peak structure in strong-field ionization by mid-infrared laser-pulses: two-dimensional focusing by the atomic potential

    We analyze the formation of the low-energy structure (LES) in above-threshold ionization spectra first observed by Quan et al.\ \cite{quan09} and Blaga et al.\ \cite{blaga09} using both quasi-classical and quantum approaches. We show this structure to be largely classical in origin resulting from a two-dimensional focusing in the energy-angular momentum plane of the strong-field dynamics in the presence of the atomic potential. The peak at low energy is strongly correlated with high angular momenta of the photoelectrons. Quantum simulations confirm this scenario. Resulting parameter dependences agree with experimental findings \cite{quan09,blaga09} and, in part, with other simulations \cite{liu10,yan10,kast11}.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figure
