    Using the Δ3\Delta_3 statistic to test for missed levels in mixed sequence neutron resonance data

    The Δ3(L)\Delta_3(L) statistic is studied as a tool to detect missing levels in the neutron resonance data where 2 sequences are present. These systems are problematic because there is no level repulsion, and the resonances can be too close to resolve. Δ3(L)\Delta_3(L) is a measure of the fluctuations in the number of levels in an interval of length LL on the energy axis. The method used is tested on ensembles of mixed Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble (GOE) spectra, with a known fraction of levels (xx%) randomly depleted, and can accurately return xx. The accuracy of the method as a function of spectrum size is established. The method is used on neutron resonance data for 11 isotopes with either s-wave neutrons on odd-A, or p-wave neutrons on even-A. The method compares favorably with a maximum likelihood method applied to the level spacing distribution. Nuclear Data Ensembles were made from 20 isotopes in total, and their Δ3(L)\Delta_3(L) statistic are discussed in the context of Random Matrix Theory.Comment: 22 pages, 12 figures, 4 table

    NPY1 Receptor Agonist Modulates Development of Depressive-Like Behavior and Gene Expression in Hypothalamus in SPS Rodent PTSD Model

    Delivery of neuropeptide Y (NPY) to the brain by intranasal infusion soon after traumatic stress has shown therapeutic potential, and prevented development of many behavioral and neuroendocrine impairments in the single prolonged stress (SPS) animal model of PTSD. Therefore, we examined whether the Y1R preferring agonist [Leu(31)Pro(34)]NPY is sufficient to prevent development of SPS induced depressive-like behavioral changes, and hypothalamic gene expression as obtained with intranasal NPY intervention. Male Sprague-Dawely rats were given intranasal infusion of either NPY (150 mug/rat), a low (68 mug /rat), or high (132 mug/rat) dose of [Leu(31)Pro(34)]NPY or vehicle immediately following the last SPS stressor, left undisturbed for 1 week and then tested for depressive-like behavior together with naive unstressed controls. Vehicle treated animals had elevated immobility forced swim test (FST) and reduced sucrose preference, which were not observed in animals given NPY or the higher dose of [Leu(31)Pro(34)]NPY. This dose of [Leu(31)Pro(34)]NPY, like NPY, also prevented the SPS-elicited induction of CRF mRNA in the mediobasal hypothalamus. However, [Leu(31)Pro(34)]NPY did not prevent, but rather enhanced, the SPS-triggered induction of GR and FKBP5 mRNA levels in the mediobasal hypothalamus. Thus, [Leu(31)Pro(34)]NPY may be as effective as NPY and displays therapeutic potential for preventing development of depressive-like behaviors and dysregulation of the CRF/HPA system in PTSD. However, due to its different effects compared to NPY on GR and FKBP5 a broader agonist, such as NPY, may be more desirable

    National child measurement programme: detailed analysis of the 2007/08 national dataset

    This report presents detailed secondary analyses to further our understanding of the epidemiology of child height, weight and Body Mass Index (BMI) across England. It attempts to explain some of the findings presented in the NHS Information Centre for Health and Social Care 2007/08 NCMP report. The report provides analysis of PCT participation levels and investigates data quality issues in the collection of the 2007/08 NCMP dataset. Data on prevalence of underweight, healthy weight, overweight and obesity are analysed, comparing the 2007/08 data to the 2006/07, and the 1990 baseline. Analyses by deprivation and ethnic group are also included. The report further examines how the distribution of BMI differs by age and sex of the child sample population, and investigates changes since the 1990 baseline. It looks at the association between obesity prevalence and characteristics of the individual children and the PCTs in which they were measured using regression analysis

    Ergodicity of the Δ3\Delta_3 statistic and purity of neutron resonance data

    The Δ3(L)\Delta_3(L) statistic characterizes the fluctuations of the number of levels as a function of the length of the spectral interval. It is studied as a possible tool to indicate the regular or chaotic nature of underlying dynamics, detect missing levels and the mixing of sequences of levels of different symmetry, particularly in neutron resonance data. The relation between the ensemble average and the average over different fragments of a given realization of spectra is considered. A useful expression for the variance of Δ3(L)\Delta_3(L) which accounts for finite sample size is discussed.     General pairing interactions and pair truncation approximations for fermions in a single-j shell

    We investigate Hamiltonians with attractive interactions between pairs of fermions coupled to angular momentum J. We show that pairs with spin J are reasonable building blocks for the low-lying states. For systems with only a J = Jmax pairing interaction, eigenvalues are found to be approximately integers for a large array of states, in particular for those with total angular momenta I le 2j. For I=0 eigenstates of four fermions in a single-j shell we show that there is only one non-zero eigenvalue. We address these observations using the nucleon pair approximation of the shell model and relate our results with a number of currently interesting problems.Comment: a latex text file and 2 figures, to be publishe

    Many-body Systems Interacting via a Two-body Random Ensemble (I): Angular Momentum distribution in the ground states

    In this paper, we discuss the angular momentum distribution in the ground states of many-body systems interacting via a two-body random ensemble. Beginning with a few simple examples, a simple approach to predict P(I)'s, angular momenta I ground state (g.s.) probabilities, of a few solvable cases, such as fermions in a small single-j shell and d boson systems, is given. This method is generalized to predict P(I)'s of more complicated cases, such as even or odd number of fermions in a large single-j shell or a many-j shell, d-boson, sd-boson or sdg-boson systems, etc. By this method we are able to tell which interactions are essential to produce a sizable P(I) in a many-body system. The g.s. probability of maximum angular momentum ImaxI_{max} is discussed. An argument on the microscopic foundation of our approach, and certain matrix elements which are useful to understand the observed regularities, are also given or addressed in detail. The low seniority chain of 0 g.s. by using the same set of two-body interactions is confirmed but it is noted that contribution to the total 0 g.s. probability beyond this chain may be more important for even fermions in a single-j shell. Preliminary results by taking a displaced two-body random ensemble are presented for the I g.s. probabilities.Comment: 39 pages and 8 figure

    Analysis of radiation-induced cell death in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma and rat liver maintained in microfluidic devices

    Objective The aim of this study was to investigate how head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) tissue biopsies maintained in a pseudo in vivo environment within a bespoke microfluidic device respond to radiation treatment. Study Design Feasibility study. Setting Tertiary referral center. Subjects and Methods Thirty-five patients with HNSCC were recruited, and liver tissue from 5 Wistar rats was obtained. A microfluidic device was used to maintain the tissue biopsy samples in a viable state. Rat liver was used to optimize the methodology. HNSCC was obtained from patients with T1-T3 laryngeal or oropharyngeal SCC; N1-N2 metastatic cervical lymph nodes were also obtained. Irradiation consisted of single doses of between 2 Gy and 40 Gy and a fractionated course of 5×2 Gy. Cell death was assessed in the tissue effluent using the soluble markers lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and cytochrome c and in the tissue by immunohistochemical detection of cleaved cytokeratin18 (M30 antibody). Results A significant surge in LDH release was demonstrated in the rat liver after a single dose of 20 Gy; in HNSCC, it was seen after 40 Gy compared with the control. There was no significant difference in cytochrome c release after 5 Gy or 10 Gy. M30 demonstrated a dose-dependent increase in apoptotic index for a given increase in single-dose radiotherapy. There was a significant increase in apoptotic index between 1×2 Gy and 5×2 Gy. Conclusion M30 is a superior method compared with soluble markers in detecting low-dose radiation-induced cell death. This microfluidic technique can be used to assess radiation-induced cell death in HNSCC and therefore has the potential to be used to predict radiation response

    Spectroscopy with random and displaced random ensembles

    Due to the time reversal invariance of the angular momentum operator J^2, the average energies and variances at fixed J for random two-body Hamiltonians exhibit odd-even-J staggering, that may be especially strong for J=0. It is shown that upon ensemble averaging over random runs, this behaviour is reflected in the yrast states. Displaced (attractive) random ensembles lead to rotational spectra with strongly enhanced BE2 transitions for a certain class of model spaces.     Instantaneous velocity field imaging instrument for supersonic reacting flows

    The technical tasks conducted to develop and demonstrate a new gas velocity measurement technique for high enthalpy reacting flows is described. The technique is based on Doppler-shifted Planar Laser-induced Fluorescence (PLIF) imaging of the OH radical. The imaging approach permits, in principle, single-shot measurements of the 2-D distribution of a single velocity component in the measurement plane, and is thus a technique of choice for applications in high enthalpy transient flow facilities. In contrast to previous work in this area, the present program demonstrated an approach which modified the diagnostic technique to function under the constraints of practical flow conditions of engineering interest, rather than vice-versa. In order to accomplish the experimental demonstrations, the state-of-the-art in PLIF diagnostic techniques was advanced in several ways. Each of these tasks is described in detail and is intended to serve as a reference in supporting the transition of this new capability to the fielded PLIF instruments now installed at several national test facilities. Among the new results of general interest in LlF-based flow diagnostics, a detailed set of the first measurements of the collisional broadening and shifting behavior of OH (1,0) band transitions in H7-air combustion environments is included. Such measurements are critical in the design of a successful strategy for PLIF velocity imaging; they also relate to accurate concentration and temperature measurements, particularly in compressible flow regimes. Furthermore, the results shed new light on the fundamental relationship between broadening and energy transfer collisions in OH A(sup 2)Sigma(+)v(sup ') = 1. The first single-pulse, spectrally-resolved measurements of the output of common pulsed dye lasers were also produced during the course of this effort. As with the OH broadening measurements, these data are a significant aspect of a successful velocity imaging strategy, and also have potential implications for many other LIF measurement techniques. Our results indicated the need to modify the commercially available laser cavity in order to accommodate the constraints imposed by typical SCRAMJET combustion characteristics as well as to increase the instrument's velocity dynamic range to span an intra-image range in excess of 2 km/s. The various technical efforts were brought together in a series of experiments demonstrating the applicability of the technique in a high pressure, high temperature H2-air combustion system. The resultant images were compared with 2-D flow simulations in order to determine the accuracy of the instrument. Mean velocity imaging in flows with an axis of symmetry was demonstrated with an accuracy of +/- 50 m/s out of an intra-image dynamic range of 1600 m/s, including reversed flow. A more complex configuration amenable to single-shot imaging in flows without an axis of symmetry was also demonstrated. Limitations imposed by available equipment resulted in an accuracy of about +/- 200 m/s out of 1750 m/s in these demonstrations. Minor modifications to the present configuration were suggested to improve this performance. Each technical task is described in detail, along with significance of the results for the overall imaging velocimeter configuration. This report should allow the user community to integrate this new measurement capability in their existing instrumentation platforms

    Sildenafil Protects Endothelial Cells From Radiation-Induced Oxidative Stress

    Introduction: The etiology of radiation-induced erectile dysfunction (ED) is complex and multifactorial, and it appears to be mainly atherogenic. Aim: To focus on vascular aspects of radiation-induced ED and to elucidate whether the protective effects of sildenafil are mediated by attenuation of oxidative stress and apoptosis in the endothelial cells. Methods: Bovine aortic endothelial cells (BAECs), with or without pretreatment of sildenafil (5 μM at 5 minutes before radiation), were used to test endothelial dysfunction in response to external beam radiation at 10–15 Gy. Generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was studied. Extracellular hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) was measured using the Amplex Red assay and intracellular H2O2 using a fluorescent sensor. In addition, ROS superoxide (O2•-) was measured using a O2•- chemiluminescence enhancer. Both H2O2 and O2•- are known to reduce the bioavailability of nitric oxide, which is the most significant chemical mediator of penile erection. Generation of cellular peroxynitrite (ONOO−) was measured using a chemiluminescence assay with the PNCL probe. Subsequently, we measured the activation of acid sphingomyelinase (ASMase) enzyme by radioenzymatic assay using [14C-methylcholine] sphingomyelin as substrate, and the generation of the proapoptotic C16-ceramide was assessed using the diacylglycerol kinase assay. Endothelial cells apoptosis was measured as a readout of these cells’ dysfunction. Main Outcome Measures: Single high-dose radiation therapy induced NADPH oxidases (NOXs) activation and ROS generation via the proapoptotic ASMase/ceramide pathway. The radio-protective effect of sildenafil on BAECs was due to inhibition of this pathway. Results: Here, we demonstrate for the first time that radiation activated NOXs and induced generation of ROS in BAECs. In addition, we showed that sildenafil significantly reduced radiation-induced O2•- and as a result there was reduction in the generation of peroxynitrite in these cells. Subsequently, sildenafil protected the endothelial cells from radiation therapy-induced apoptosis. Strengths and Limitations: This is the first study demonstrating that single high-dose radiation therapy induced NOXs activation, resulting in the generation of O2•- and peroxynitrite in endothelial cells. Sildenafil reduced ROS generation by inhibiting the ASMase/ceramide pathway. These studies should be followed in an animal model of ED. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that sildenafil protects BAECs from radiation-induced oxidative stress by reducing NOX-induced ROS generation, thus resulting in decreased endothelial dysfunction.
