    Rhythmic inhibition allows neural networks to search for maximally consistent states

    Gamma-band rhythmic inhibition is a ubiquitous phenomenon in neural circuits yet its computational role still remains elusive. We show that a model of Gamma-band rhythmic inhibition allows networks of coupled cortical circuit motifs to search for network configurations that best reconcile external inputs with an internal consistency model encoded in the network connectivity. We show that Hebbian plasticity allows the networks to learn the consistency model by example. The search dynamics driven by rhythmic inhibition enable the described networks to solve difficult constraint satisfaction problems without making assumptions about the form of stochastic fluctuations in the network. We show that the search dynamics are well approximated by a stochastic sampling process. We use the described networks to reproduce perceptual multi-stability phenomena with switching times that are a good match to experimental data and show that they provide a general neural framework which can be used to model other 'perceptual inference' phenomena

    Convergence of discrete duality finite volume schemes for the cardiac bidomain model

    We prove convergence of discrete duality finite volume (DDFV) schemes on distorted meshes for a class of simplified macroscopic bidomain models of the electrical activity in the heart. Both time-implicit and linearised time-implicit schemes are treated. A short description is given of the 3D DDFV meshes and of some of the associated discrete calculus tools. Several numerical tests are presented

    A framework for lean manufacturing implementation

    The lean implementation initiatives can be categorised as roadmap, conceptual/implementation framework, descriptive and assessment checklist initiatives. A literature review on the lean initiatives has examined 28 initiatives. A set of rules is proposed to evaluate these initiatives with respect to nine factors impacting lean implementation. The evaluation has proved that the implementation frameworks have highest association with lean factors. However, existing lean initiatives are not demonstrated in a structured nature. The failure in managing lean implementation process is often consolidated to poor mind-set and inadequate understanding of the lean concept itself. In this paper, an attempt has been made to propose a framework to overcome some of the limitations. The proposed framework is constructed as a project-based framework with detailed four implementation phases. Appropriate practices and decision tools are proposed and assigned to each phase. However, the proposed framework is at conceptual stage. It requires further implementation to be validated.Full Tex

    Effectiveness-mass transfer units (ε-MTU) model of a reverse osmosis membrane mass exchanger

    A strong analogy exists between heat exchangers and osmotic mass exchangers. The effectiveness-number of transfer units (ε-NTU) method is well-known for the sizing and rating of heat exchangers. A similar method, called the effectiveness-mass transfer units (ε-MTU) method, is developed for reverse osmosis (RO) mass exchangers. Governing equations for an RO mass exchanger are nondimensionalized assuming ideal membrane characteristics and a linearized form of the osmotic pressure function for seawater. A closed form solution is found which relates three dimensionless groups: the number of mass transfer units, which is an effective size of the exchanger; a pressure ratio, which relates osmotic and hydraulic pressures; and the recovery ratio, which is the ratio of permeate to inlet feed flow rates. A novel performance parameter, the effectiveness of an RO exchanger, is defined as a ratio of the recovery ratio to the maximum recovery ratio. A one-dimensional numerical model is developed to correct for the effects of feed-side external concentration polarization and nonlinearities in osmotic pressure as a function of salinity. A comparison of model results to experimental data found in the literature resulted in an average error of less than 7.8%.     Subwavelength atom localization via amplitude and phase control of the absorption spectrum

    We propose a scheme for subwavelength localization of an atom conditioned upon the absorption of a weak probe field at a particular frequency. Manipulating atom-field interaction on a certain transition by applying drive fields on nearby coupled transitions leads to interesting effects in the absorption spectrum of the weak probe field. We exploit this fact and employ a four-level system with three driving fields and a weak probe field, where one of the drive fields is a standing-wave field of a cavity. We show that the position of an atom along this standing wave is determined when probe field absorption is measured. We find that absorption of the weak probe field at a certain frequency leads to subwavelength localization of the atom in either of the two half-wavelength regions of the cavity field by appropriate choice of the system parameters. We term this result as sub-half-wavelength localization to contrast it with the usual atom localization result of four peaks spread over one wavelength of the standing wave. We observe two localization peaks in either of the two half-wavelength regions along the cavity axis.Comment: Accepted for publication to Physical Review
