Direct observation of a highly spin-polarized organic spinterface at room temperature
The design of large-scale electronic circuits that are entirely
spintronics-driven requires a current source that is highly spin-polarised at
and beyond room temperature, cheap to build, efficient at the nanoscale and
straightforward to integrate with semiconductors. Yet despite research within
several subfields spanning nearly two decades, this key building block is still
lacking. We experimentally and theoretically show how the interface between Co
and phthalocyanine molecules constitutes a promising candidate. Spin-polarised
direct and inverse photoemission experiments reveal a high degree of spin
polarisation at room temperature at this interface. We measured a magnetic
moment on the molecules's nitrogen pi orbitals, which substantiates an
ab-initio theoretical description of highly spin-polarised charge conduction
across the interface due to differing spinterface formation mechanims in each
spin channel. We propose, through this example, a recipe to engineer simple
organic-inorganic interfaces with remarkable spintronic properties that can
endure well above room temperature

Temperature- and Light-Induced Spin Crossover Observed by X-ray Spectroscopy on Isolated Fe(II) Complexes on Gold
Using X-ray absorption techniques, we show that temperature- and light-induced spin crossover properties are conserved for a submonolayer of the [Fe(H2B(pz)2)2(2,2′-bipy)] complex evaporated onto a Au(111) surface. For a significant fraction of the molecules, we see changes in the absorption at the L2,3 edges that are consistent with those observed in bulk and thick film references. Assignment of these changes to spin crossover is further supported by multiplet calculations to simulate the X-ray absorption spectra. As others have observed in experiments on monolayer coverages, we find that many molecules in our submonolayer system remain pinned in one of the two spin states. Our results clearly demonstrate that temperature- and light-induced spin crossover is possible for isolated molecules on surfaces but that interactions with the surface may play a key role in determining when this can occur

Finite frequency whole mantle P wave tomography: Improvement of subducted slab images,
International audienceWe present a new whole mantle P wave tomographic model GAP_P4. We used two data groups; short-period data of more than 10 million picked-up onset times and long-period data of more than 20 thousand differential travel times measured by waveform cross correlation. Finite frequency kernels were calculated at the corresponding frequency bands for both long- and short-period data. With respect to an earlier model GAP_P2, we find important improvements especially in the transition zone and uppermost lower mantle beneath the South China Sea and the southern Philippine Sea owing to broadband ocean bottom seismometers (BBOBSs) deployed in the western Pacific Ocean where station coverage is poor. This new model is different from a model in which the full data set is interpreted with classical ray theory. BBOBS observations should be more useful to sharpen images of subducted slabs than expected from simple raypath coverage arguments
