    Preliminary compressor design study for an advanced multistage axial flow compressor

    An optimum, axial flow, high pressure ratio compressor for a turbofan engine was defined for commercial subsonic transport service starting in the late 1980's. Projected 1985 technologies were used and applied to compressors with an 18:1 pressure ratio having 6 to 12 stages. A matrix of 49 compressors was developed by statistical techniques. The compressors were evaluated by means of computer programs in terms of various airline economic figures of merit such as return on investment and direct-operating cost. The optimum configuration was determined to be a high speed, 8-stage compressor with an average blading aspect ratio of 1.15

    Biphasic behaviour in malignant invasion

    Invasion is an important facet of malignant growth that enables tumour cells to colonise adjacent regions of normal tissue. Factors known to influence such invasion include the rate at which the tumour cells produce tissue-degrading molecules, or proteases, and the composition of the surrounding tissue matrix. A common feature of experimental studies is the biphasic dependence of the speed at which the tumour cells invade on properties such as protease production rates and the density of the normal tissue. For example, tumour cells may invade dense tissues at the same speed as they invade less dense tissue, with maximal invasion seen for intermediate tissue densities. In this paper, a theoretical model of malignant invasion is developed. The model consists of two coupled partial differential equations describing the behaviour of the tumour cells and the surrounding normal tissue. Numerical methods show that the model exhibits steady travelling wave solutions that are stable and may be smooth or discontinuous. Attention focuses on the more biologically relevant, discontinuous solutions which are characterised by a jump in the tumour cell concentration. The model also reproduces the biphasic dependence of the tumour cell invasion speed on the density of the surrounding normal tissue. We explain how this arises by seeking constant-form travelling wave solutions and applying non-standard phase plane methods to the resulting system of ordinary differential equations. In the phase plane, the system possesses a singular curve. Discontinuous solutions may be constructed by connecting trajectories that pass through particular points on the singular curve and recross it via a shock. For certain parameter values, there are two points at which trajectories may cross the singular curve and, as a result, two distinct discontinuous solutions may arise

    This research examines the success of stabilization policies to control hyperinflation in Bolivia. Money demand functions for the hyperinflation and stabilization periods were econometrically estimated and statistically tested. We conclude that the demand for money in Bolivia changed after stabilization policies were implemented, indicating that the new government's objectives were met.     The neuroanatomical correlates of repetitive negative thinking: A systematic review

    Repetitive negative thinking (RNT) is a cognitive process characterised by intrusive, repetitive, and difficult-to-disengage-from negative thoughts. Heightened RNT levels are prevalent across clinical disorders and have been associated with ill-health (e.g. cardiovascular disease), even at lower, non-clinical levels. Identifying the neuroanatomical correlates of RNT could help characterise structural alterations that transcend diagnostic boundaries and further understanding of the pathogenesis of clinical disorders. We therefore conducted a systematic review to investigate associations between RNT and brain morphology. Following title/abstract and full-text screening, 24 studies were included. We found evidence that RNT severity is associated with grey and white matter volumes/microstructure, particularly in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, anterior cingulate cortex and superior longitudinal fasciculus, regions heavily implicated in cognitive control, and emotional processing and regulation. However, inconsistent associations, potentially due to the heterogeneity of included studies (e.g. methodological differences, type of RNT assessed), preclude specific conclusions being reached regarding any one region's association with RNT. Further, given the defuse nature of thoughts, it may be that RNT is associated with distributed brain regions operating within large-scale networks, rather than with a single structure. High quality longitudinal studies, investigating structural networks, are required to confirm the neuroanatomical basis of RNT and elucidate the direction of relationships

    Landscape Evolution of the Dry Valleys, Transantarctic Mountains: Tectonic Implications

    There are different views about the amount and timing of surface uplift in the Transantarctic Mountains and the geophysical mechanisms involved. Our new interpretation of the landscape evolution and tectonic history of the Dry Valleys area of the Transantarctic Mountains is based on geomorphic mapping of an area of 10,000 km(2). The landforms are dated mainly by their association with volcanic ashes and glaciomarine deposits and this permits a reconstruction of the stages and timing of landscape evolution. Following a lowering of base level about 55 m.y. ago, there was a phase of rapid denudation associated with planation and escarpment retreat, probably under semiarid conditions. Eventually, downcutting by rivers, aided in places by glaciers, graded valleys to near present sea level. The main valleys were flooded by the sea in the Miocene during a phase of subsidence before experiencing a final stage of modest upwarping near the coast. There has been remarkably little landform change under the stable, cold, polar conditions of the last 15 m.y. It is difficult to explain the Sirius Group deposits, which occur at high elevations in the area, if they are Pliocene in age. Overall, denudation may have removed a wedge of rock with a thickness of over 4 km at the coast declining to 1 km at a point 75 km inland, which is in good agreement with the results of existing apatite fission track analyses. It is suggested that denudation reflects the differences in base level caused by high elevation at the time of extension due to underplating and the subsequent role of thermal uplift and flexural isostasy. Most crustal uplift (2-4 km) is inferred to have occurred in the early Cenozoic with 400 m of subsidence in the Miocene followed by 300 m of uplift in the Pliocene
