Trial factors for the look elsewhere effect in high energy physics
When searching for a new resonance somewhere in a possible mass range, the
significance of observing a local excess of events must take into account the
probability of observing such an excess anywhere in the range. This is the so
called "look elsewhere effect". The effect can be quantified in terms of a
trial factor, which is the ratio between the probability of observing the
excess at some fixed mass point, to the probability of observing it anywhere in
the range. We propose a simple and fast procedure for estimating the trial
factor, based on earlier results by Davies. We show that asymptotically, the
trial factor grows linearly with the (fixed mass) significance
Chlamydia diagnosis rate in England in 2012: an ecological study of local authorities
Objectives Local authorities (LAs) in England commission chlamydia screening as part of the National Chlamydia Screening Programme. It is recommended that LAs achieve a chlamydia diagnosis rate of ≥2300 cases per 100 000 population aged 15–24. We describe national patterns in attainment of the chlamydia diagnosis rate recommendation and possible implications of using it to measure LA-level performance. Methods We used publicly available data sets from England (2012) to explore the association between LAs attaining the recommended chlamydia diagnosis rate and population size, socioeconomic deprivation, test setting and sex. Results We used data from 1 197 121 recorded chlamydia tests in females and 564 117 in males. The chlamydia diagnosis rate recommendation was achieved by 22% (72/324) of LAs overall (43% female population; 8% male population). LAs in the highest deprivation quintile were more likely to reach the recommendation than those in the least-deprived quintile for both sexes (women: unadjusted prevalence ratio (UPR) 7.43, 95% CI 3.65 to 15.11; men: UPR 7.00, 95% CI 1.66 to 29.58). The proportion of tests performed in genitourinary medicine clinics was negatively associated with attainment of the recommended diagnosis rate (UPR 0.95, 0.93 to 0.97). Conclusions Chlamydia diagnosis rate recommendations that reflect local area deprivation (as a proxy for disease burden) may be more appropriate than a single national target if the aim is to reduce health inequalities nationally. We suggest LAs monitor their chlamydia diagnosis rate, test coverage and test positivity across a range of measures (including setting and sex) and pre/post changes to commissioned services. Critical evaluation of performance against the recommendation should be reflected in local commissioning decisions
Electronic and optical properties of quantum wells embedded in wrinkled nanomembranes
The authors theoretically investigate quantum confinement and transition
energies in quantum wells (QWs) asymmetrically positioned in wrinkled
nanomembranes. Calculations reveal that the wrinkle profile induces both blue-
and redshifts depending on the lateral position of the QW probed. Relevant
radiative transistions include the ground state of the electron (hole) and
excited states of the hole (electron). Energy shifts as well as stretchability
of the structure are studied as a function of wrinkle amplitude and period.
Large tunable bandwidths of up to 70 nm are predicted for highly asymmetric

Stellar and Molecular Gas Kinematics of NGC1097: Inflow Driven by a Nuclear Spiral
We present spatially resolved distributions and kinematics of the stars and
molecular gas in the central 320pc of NGC1097. The stellar continuum confirms
the previously reported 3-arm spiral pattern extending into the central 100pc.
The stellar kinematics and the gas distribution imply this is a shadowing
effect due to extinction by gas and dust in the molecular spiral arms. The
molecular gas kinematics show a strong residual (i.e. non-circular) velocity,
which is manifested as a 2-arm kinematic spiral. Linear models indicate that
this is the line-of-sight velocity pattern expected for a density wave in gas
that generates a 3-arm spiral morphology. We estimate the inflow rate along the
arms. Using hydrodynamical models of nuclear spirals, we show that when
deriving the accretion rate into the central region, outflow in the disk plane
between the arms has to be taken into account. For NGC1097, despite the inflow
rate along the arms being ~1.2Msun/yr, the net gas accretion rate to the
central few tens of parsecs is much smaller. The numerical models indicate that
the inflow rate could be as little as ~0.06Msun/yr. This is sufficient to
generate recurring starbursts, similar in scale to that observed, every
20-150Myr. The nuclear spiral represents a mechanism that can feed gas into the
central parsecs of the galaxy, with the gas flow sustainable for timescales of

NuSTAR hard X-ray data and Gemini 3D spectra reveal powerful AGN and outflow histories in two low-redshift Lyman- blobs
We have shown that Lyman- blobs (LABs) may still exist even at
, about 7 billion years later than most other LABs known (Schirmer et
al. 2016). Their luminous Ly and [OIII] emitters at offer
new insights into the ionization mechanism. This paper focuses on the two X-ray
brightest LABs at , SDSS J01130106 (J0113) and SDSS J11550147
(J1155), comparable in size and luminosity to `B1', one of the best-studied
LABs at 2. Our NuSTAR hard X-ray (3--30 keV) observations reveal
powerful active galactic nuclei (AGN) with -- erg cm s. J0113 also faded by a
factor of between 2014 and 2016, emphasizing that variable AGN may
cause apparent ionization deficits in LABs. Joint spectral analyses including
Chandra data constrain column densities of cm (J0113) and cm (J1155). J0113 is likely buried in
a torus with a narrow ionization cone, but ionizing radiation is also leaking
in other directions as revealed by our Gemini/GMOS 3D spectroscopy. The latter
shows a bipolar outflow over kpc, with a peculiar velocity profile that is
best explained by AGN flickering. X-ray analysis of J1155 reveals a weakly
absorbed AGN that may ionize over a wide solid angle, consistent with our 3D
spectra. Extinction corrected [OIII] log-luminosities are high, . The
velocity dispersions are low, -- km s, even at the AGN
positions. We argue that this is a combination of high extinction hiding the
turbulent gas, and previous outflows that have cleared the escape paths for

The granular silo as a continuum plastic flow: the hour-glass vs the clepsydra
The granular silo is one of the many interesting illustrations of the
thixotropic property of granular matter: a rapid flow develops at the outlet,
propagating upwards through a dense shear flow while material at the bottom
corners of the container remains static. For large enough outlets, the
discharge flow is continuous; however, by contrast with the clepsydra for which
the flow velocity depends on the height of fluid left in the container, the
discharge rate of granular silos is constant. Implementing a plastic rheology
in a 2D Navier-Stokes solver (following the mu(I)-rheology or a constant
friction), we simulate the continuum counterpart of the granular silo. Doing
so, we obtain a constant flow rate during the discharge and recover the
Beverloo scaling independently of the initial filling height of the silo. We
show that lowering the value of the coefficient of friction leads to a
transition toward a different behavior, similar to that of a viscous fluid, and
where the filling height becomes active in the discharge process. The pressure
field shows that large enough values of the coefficient of friction (
0.3) allow for a low-pressure cavity to form above the outlet, and can thus
explain the Beverloo scaling. In conclusion, the difference between the
discharge of a hourglass and a clepsydra seems to reside in the existence or

Quantum Fluctuations of Radiation Pressure
Quantum fluctuations of electromagnetic radiation pressure are discussed. We
use an approach based on the quantum stress tensor to calculate the
fluctuations in velocity and position of a mirror subjected to electromagnetic
radiation. Our approach reveals that radiation pressure fluctuations are due to
a cross term between vacuum and state dependent terms in a stress tensor
operator product. Thus observation of these fluctuations would entail
experimental confirmation of this cross term. We first analyze the pressure
fluctuations on a single, perfectly reflecting mirror, and then study the case
of an interferometer. This involves a study of the effects of multiple bounces
in one arm, as well as the correlations of the pressure fluctuations between
arms of the interferometer. In all cases, our results are consistent with those

Precision Charmonium Spectroscopy From Lattice QCD
We present results for Charmonium spectroscopy using Non-Relativistic QCD
(NRQCD). For the NRQCD action the leading order spin-dependent and next to
leading order spin-independent interactions have been included with
tadpole-improved coefficients. We use multi-exponential fits to multiple
correlation functions to extract ground and excited states. Splittings
between the lowest , and states are given and we have accurate
values for the state hyperfine splitting and the fine structure.
Agreement with experiment is good - the remaining systematic errors are

Intrinsic Curie temperature bistability in ferromagnetic semiconductor resonant tunneling diodes
We predict bistability in the Curie temperature-voltage characteristic of
double barrier resonant-tunneling structures with dilute ferromagnetic
semiconductor quantum wells. Our conclusions are based on simulations of
electrostatics and ballistic quantum transport combined with a mean-field
