    Die Dichte der Sommerfauna der Invertebraten in den Kronen der Kiefern (außer Mikrolepidopteren, Aphiden, Psociden, Jassiden und Milben) wurde in den Jahren 1967-1971 für die Monate Juni, Juli, August und September ermittelt. Die Proben wurden den Bäumen entnommen, indem man Zweige vorsichtig in einen großen Sack schnitt. Nachdem die Tiere mit Kohlendioxyd getötet worden waren, wurden sie durch kräftiges Schütteln der Zweige über einem Tuch aus diesen entfernt.The density of the invertebrate fauna on the crowns of pine trees (microlepidoptera, aphids, psocids, jassids and mites excepted) has been assessed in June, July, August and September over the years 1967-1971. Trees have been sampled by cutting twigs and carefully putting them into a large sack.     A prognostic model for amputation in critical lower limb ischemia

    In a (negative) multicenter randomized trial on management for inoperable critical lower limb ischemia, comparing spinal cord stimulation and best medical treatment, a number of pre-defined factors were analyzed for prognostic value. We included a radiological arterial disease score, modified from the SVS/ISCVS runoff score. The purpose of this analysis was to evaluate clinical factors and commonly used circulatory measurements for prognostic modeling in patients with critical lower limb ischemia. We determined the incidence of amputation and its relation to various pre-defined risk factors. A total of 120 patients with critical limb ischemia were included in the study. The integrity of circulation in the affected limb was evaluated on five levels: suprainguinal,infrainguinal, popliteal, infrapopliteal and pedal. A total radiological arterial disease score was calculated from 1 ( full integrity of circulation) to 20 (maximally compromised state). We used Cox regression analysis to quantify prognostic effects and differential treatment (predictive) effects. Major amputation occurred in 33% of the patients at 6 months and in 51% at 2 years. The presence of ischemic skin lesions and the radiological arterial disease score were independent prognostic factors for amputation. Patients with ulcerations or gangrene had a higher amputation risk (hazard ratio 2.38, p = 0.018 and 2.30, p = 0.036 respectively) as well as patients with a higher radiological arterial disease score (hazard ratio 1.17 per increment, p = 0.003). We did not observe significant interactions between prognostic factors and the effect of spinal cord stimulation. In conclusion, in patients with critical lower limb ischemia, the presence of ischemic skin lesions and the described radiological arterial disease score can be used to estimate amputation risk

    The Copper Metabolism MURR1 domain protein 1 (COMMD1) is a protein involved in multiple cellular pathways, including copper homeostasis, NF-kappa B and hypoxia signalling. Acting as a scaffold protein, COMMD1 mediates the levels, stability and proteolysis of its substrates (e.g. the copper-transporters ATP7B and ATP7A, RELA and HIF-1 alpha). Recently, we established an interaction between the Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) and COMMD1, resulting in a decreased maturation and activation of SOD1. Mutations in SOD1, associated with the progressive neurodegenerative disorder Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), cause misfolding and aggregation of the mutant SOD1 (mSOD1) protein. Here, we identify COMMD1 as a novel regulator of misfolded protein aggregation as it enhances the formation of mSOD1 aggregates upon binding. Interestingly, COMMD1 co-localizes to the sites of mSOD1 inclusions and forms high molecular weight complexes in the presence of mSOD1. The effect of COMMD1 on protein aggregation is client-specific as, in contrast to mSOD1, COMMD1 decreases the abundance of mutant Parkin inclusions, associated with Parkinson's disease. Aggregation of a polyglutamine-expanded Huntingtin, causative of Huntington's disease, appears unaltered by COMMD1. Altogether, this study offers new research directions to expand our current knowledge on the mechanisms underlying aggregation disease pathologies.</p

    The innovation decision:an economic analysis

    Studies of the determinants and effects of innovation commonly make an assumption about the way in which firms make the decision to innovate, but rarely test this assumption. Using a panel of Irish manufacturing firms we test the performance of two alternative models of the innovation decision, and find that a two-stage model (the firm decides whether to innovate, then whether to perform product only, process only or both) outperforms a one-stage, simultaneous model. We also find that external knowledge sourcing affects the innovation decision and the type of innovation undertaken in a way not previously recognised in the literature. © 2007 Elsevier Ltd.
