The incidence of mid-infrared excesses in G and K giants
Using photometric data from the 2MASS and GLIMPSE catalogues, I investigate
the incidence of mid-infrared excesses (~10 microns) of G and K stars of
luminosity class III. In order to obtain a large sample size, stars are
selected using a near-IR colour-magnitude diagram. Sources which are candidates
for showing mid-IR excess are carefully examined and modelled to determined
whether they are likely to be G/K giants. It is found that mid-IR excesses are
present at a level of (1.8 +/- 0.4) x 10^-3. While the origin of these excesses
remains uncertain, it is plausible that they arise from debris discs around
these stars. I note that the measured incidence is consistent with a scenario
in which dust lifetimes in debris discs are determined by Poynting-Robertson

Functional imaging of plants: A nuclear magnetic resonance study of a cucumber plant
Functional magnetic resonance imaging was used to study transients of biophysical parameters in a cucumber plant in response to environmental changes. Detailed flow imaging experiments showed the location of xylem and phloem in the stem and the response of the following flow characteristics to the imposed environmental changes: the total amount of water, the amount of stationary and flowing water, the linear velocity of the flowing water, and the volume flow. The total measured volume flow through the plant stem was in good agreement with the independently measured water uptake by the roots. A separate analysis of the flow characteristics for two vascular bundles revealed that changes in volume flow of the xylem sap were accounted for by a change in linear-flow velocities in the xylem vessels. Multiple-spin echo experiments revealed two water fractions for different tissues in the plant stem; the spin-spin relaxation time of the larger fraction of parenchyma tissue in the center of the stem and the vascular tissue was down by 17% in the period after cooling the roots of the plant. Social Simulation of Stock Markets: Taking It to the Next Level
This paper studies the use of social simulation in linking micro level investor behaviour and macro level stock market dynamics. Empirical data from a survey on individual investors\' decision-making and social interaction was used to formalize the trading and interaction rules of the agents of the artificial stock market SimStockExchange. Multiple simulation runs were performed with this artificial stock market, which generated macro level results, like stock market prices and returns over time. These outcomes were subsequently compared to empirical macro level data from real stock markets. The yellow hypergiants HR 8752 and rho Cassiopeiae near the evolutionary border of instability
High-resolution near-ultraviolet spectra of the yellow hypergiants HR 8752
and rho Cassiopeiae indicate high effective temperatures placing both stars
near the T_eff border of the ``yellow evolutionary void''. At present, the
temperature of HR 8752 is higher than ever. For this star we found
Teff=7900+-200 K, whereas rho Cassiopeiae has Teff=7300+-200 K. Both, HR 8752
and rho Cassiopeiae have developed strong stellar winds with Vinf ~ 120 km/s
and Vinf ~ 100 km/s, respectively. For HR 8752 we estimate an upper limit for
the spherically symmetric mass-loss of 6.7X10^{-6}M_solar/yr. Over the past
decades two yellow hypergiants appear to have approached an evolutionary phase,
which has never been observed before. We present the first spectroscopic
evidence of the blueward motion of a cool super/hypergiant on the HR diagram.Comment: 13 pages including 3 figures. Accepted for publication in ApJ Letter
Elastic Registration of Geodesic Vascular Graphs
Vascular graphs can embed a number of high-level features, from morphological
parameters, to functional biomarkers, and represent an invaluable tool for
longitudinal and cross-sectional clinical inference. This, however, is only
feasible when graphs are co-registered together, allowing coherent multiple
comparisons. The robust registration of vascular topologies stands therefore as
key enabling technology for group-wise analyses. In this work, we present an
end-to-end vascular graph registration approach, that aligns networks with
non-linear geometries and topological deformations, by introducing a novel
overconnected geodesic vascular graph formulation, and without enforcing any
anatomical prior constraint. The 3D elastic graph registration is then
performed with state-of-the-art graph matching methods used in computer vision.
Promising results of vascular matching are found using graphs from synthetic
and real angiographies. Observations and future designs are discussed towards
potential clinical applications
Meaningful assessment in health technology
Published ArticleThe implementation of the outcomes-based education and training (OBET) and learner-centred approaches specifically in the health technology programmes at the Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT) exposed facilitators to new challenges in teaching and assessment. The current assessment environment in these programmes was established, using two questionnaires aimed at facilitators and students. The results of the study showed a trend towards innovation in assessment and the establishment of an assessment culture when compared with specific characteristics in literature on meaningful and scholarly assessment practices
