The direct and indirect effects of nitrogen shortage on photosynthesis and transpiration in maize and sunflower.

Experiments with maize and sunflower in sol. culture were carried out to investigate the effect of N shortage in the leaf tissue on stomatal behaviour. In maize a linear relation existed between the rate of net CO2 assimilation and the conductance of water vapour, independently of the N status of the tissue. In sunflower a similar relation existed although the evidence was less conclusive. It was concluded that stomatal behaviour cannot explain differences in water-use efficiency between plants growing at different levels of N. Reporting crime : effects of social context on the decision of victims to notify the police

Victim reports are the main source of information for the police regarding where crimes are committed, and also the basis for most subsequent actions of the criminal justice system. Therefore, the victims' decision to report to the police is crucial. However, much criminal victimization is not reported and, consequently, many offenders are never prosecuted. Why are some crimes reported and others not? Substantial differences in reporting are found across crime locations, neighborhoods and countries. In this book, a socio-ecological model of victims' decision-making is introduced which endeavors to explain these contextual differences in reporting. To empirically test the main hypotheses derived from this model, several data sources are used and different research strategies are employed, with which the effects of crime, victim and contextual factors on victims' reporting behavior are simultaneously analyzed. Factors constituting the context in which crime incidents take place (e.g. whether the location is in the private or public domain), as well as factors composing the neighborhood context (e.g. the neighborhood social cohesion) and – to a lesser extent – the country context in which victims reside, were found to play a role in victims's decision (not) to report.FDR Dynamiek van criminaliteit en regelovertreding -- ou

Availability of anions in the growth medium to roots of an actively growing plant.

Analysis of anion transport to the root of an actively growing plant with a normally dense root system showed that virtually the whole of the anion store in the rooting zone is available to the plant within a few days at the most. Transport by diffusion only is enough to account for most of the depletion, but mass flow will speed up the process. The effect of mass flow will be considerable in soils with a high dispersion coefficient (loess), but very small in soils with a low dispersion coefficient (clay and sand). A rule is proposed to determine whether a given root density is sufficient to supply the nitrogen and water needs of the plant by diffusion only.
