    A variety of critical experiments were constructed with unreflected and unmoderated highly enriched uranium during the 1960s and 1970s at the Oak Ridge Critical Experiments Facility in support of criticality safety of the Y-12 National Security Complex. Of these hundreds of delayed critical assemblies, thirteen assemblies of two interacting cylinders with 11-in. diameters and five solid cylinders with diameters varying from 7 to 15 in. are documented here in much more detail than previously. The data presented here are used to verify calculation methods. The measured neutron multiplication factors Keff, values, have an experimental uncertainty of less than Δkeeff= ±6.20E-04. The experiments are modeled using SCALE with KENO-VI. Three cross-section libraries and the KENO-VI Monte Carlo code are evaluated using these unreflected and unmoderated highly enriched uranium metal cylinders: Hansen-Roach, the 27-group, and the 238-group libraries. A fourth evaluation used the 238-group library with all known impurities. The statistical uncertainty of the calculations is less than or equal to Δkeeff= ± 0.0003. An examination of a comparison of the calculations shows rather small deviation from measured keeff values, with the largest deviation of a calculation from a measurement being Δkeeff= ± 0.0062. The average deviations of keeff values obtained with the Hansen- Roach, 27-group, and 238-group cross-section libraries from the measured values are - 0.0021, +0.0039, and -0.0042, respectively. With impurities explicitly modeled utilizing the 238-group cross-section library, the average deviation of keeff values is -0.0039. This evaluation shows the usefulness of this experimental data for verifying neutron transport methods and cross-section libraries

    The CP-violating asymmetry in K_L -> pi+ pi- e+ e-

    Full text link
    We update the theoretical analysis of the CP-violating asymmetry in the decay K_L -> pi+ pi- e+ e-, relying on chiral perturbation theory and on the most recent phenomenological information. With the experimentally determined magnetic amplitude and branching ratio as input, the asymmetry can be calculated with good accuracy. The theoretical interpretation of the sign of the asymmetry is discussed.Comment: 11 page

    Dynamic Response of Control Servo System Installed in NAES-Equipped SB2C-5 Airplane (BuAer No. 83135)

    Get PDF
    Dynamic--response measurements for various conditions of displacement and rate signal input, sensitivity setting, and simulated hinge moment were made of the three control-surface servo systems of an NAES-equipped remote-controlled airplane while on the ground. The basic components of the servo systems are those of the General Electric Company type G-1 autopilot using electrical signal. sources, solenoid-operated valves, and hydraulic pistons. The test procedures and difficulties are discussed, Both frequency and transient-response data, are presented and comparisons are made. The constants describing the servo system, the undamped natural frequency, and the damping ratio, are determined by several methods. The response of the system with the addition of airframe rate signal is calculated. The transfer function of the elevator surface, linkage, and cable system is obtained. The agreement between various methods of measurement and calculation is considered very good. The data are complete enough and in such form that they may be used directly with the frequency-response data of an airplane to predict the stability of the autopilot-airplane combination

    B582: Competition among Areas in Supplying Broilers to the New York Market

    Many factors are responsible for the rapid expansion of the broiler industry in the United States from 356 million, birds in 1948 to 1,452 million in 1957. This report describes the factors such as larger units of production, greatly improved feeds, better disease control, and increased consumer demand for broilers.https://digitalcommons.library.umaine.edu/aes_bulletin/1033/thumbnail.jp

    Overview of Grand Unified Models and Their Predictions for Neutrino Oscillations

    Get PDF
    A brief overview of Grand Unified Models is presented with some attention paid to their predictions for neutrino oscillations. Given the well-known features of the two non-unified standard models, SM and MSSM, a listing of the features of classes of unified models is given, where a GUT flavor symmetry and/or family symmetry are introduced to reduce the number of model parameters. Some general remarks are then made concerning the type of predictions that follow for the neutrino masses and mixings.Comment: 6 pages, contribution to the Proceedings of the NuFACT'00 Workshop held in Monterey, CA May 22-26, 200
