Perturbation propagation in random and evolved Boolean networks

We investigate the propagation of perturbations in Boolean networks by evaluating the Derrida plot and modifications of it. We show that even small Random Boolean Networks agree well with the predictions of the annealed approximation, but non-random networks show a very different behaviour. We focus on networks that were evolved for high dynamical robustness. The most important conclusion is that the simple distinction between frozen, critical and chaotic networks is no longer useful, since such evolved networks can display properties of all three types of networks. Furthermore, we evaluate a simplified empirical network and show how its specific state space properties are reflected in the modified Derrida plots.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figure

Maslow's and Freud's Theories Reflected in Andrew Laeddis' Character

This research explores the portrayal of schizophrenia symptoms in the character Andrew Laeddis from the movie "Shutter Island". It examines how psychoanalysis and Maslow's hierarchy of needs can be applied to analyze his condition and coping mechanisms. The study aims to understand how Andrew deals with his schizophrenia and fulfils his needs as a person with a mental illness. The research adopts a psychological approach, using Sigmund Freud's psychoanalysis theory and Maslow's hierarchy of needs. This research uses the qualitative descriptive method and content analysis techniques to analyze Andrew's character. The data for analysis and interpretation are derived from the film's script and related theories. The study combines qualitative methods and content analysis to provide a detailed portrayal of Andrew Laeddis' psychological makeup and character traits. The findings reveal that Andrew exhibits symptoms representing the three aspects of Freud's psychological structure: id, ego, and superego. The id is evident in his violent and impulsive behaviour driven by a desire for revenge. The ego is seen in his desire for control and mastery over his mind and body. The superego manifests as his respect for authority and social norms. Additionally, the analysis based on Maslow's theory shows that Andrew's behaviour reflects his struggle to fulfil his basic physiological needs and his higher-level needs for safety, love and belonging, esteem, and self-actualization

The phase diagram of random threshold networks

Threshold networks are used as models for neural or gene regulatory networks. They show a rich dynamical behaviour with a transition between a frozen and a chaotic phase. We investigate the phase diagram of randomly connected threshold networks with real-valued thresholds h and a fixed number of inputs per node. The nodes are updated according to the same rules as in a model of the cell-cycle network of Saccharomyces cereviseae [PNAS 101, 4781 (2004)]. Using the annealed approximation, we derive expressions for the time evolution of the proportion of nodes in the "on" and "off" state, and for the sensitivity λ\lambda. The results are compared with simulations of quenched networks. We find that for integer values of h the simulations show marked deviations from the annealed approximation even for large networks. This can be attributed to the particular choice of the updating rule.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure

Perbandingan Implementasi Model Problem Based Learning dan Direct Instruction dalam Meningkatkan Motivasi dan Hasil Belajar Siswa pada Mata Pelajaran Jaringan Dasar Kelas X

This research aims at (1) discovering the comparison between pre-test and post-test results on experiment class using problem based learning; (2) discovering the result of post-test on experiment class using problem based learning and control class using direct instruction; (3) discovering the comparison of learning motivation of students between problem based learning method and direct instruction. The data analysis employed was t-test and single path of anava test. The result of the research indicates that problem based learning is higher than direct instruction on certain materials for instance network addressing protocol and network hardware.
