Hydrozoa, fjord Comau, Chile.
The shallow-water hydrozoan fauna of fjordComau is surveyed. A total of thirty three specieswere recorded. They have been assigned to eightfamilies of Athecata, eight families of Thecata,two families of Narcomedusae and one family ofTrachymedusae. Their ecology is brieflydiscussed
Transport and structural study of pressure-induced magnetic states in Nd0.55Sr0.45MnO3 and Nd0.5Sr0.5MnO3
Pressure effects on the electron transport and structure of Nd1-xSrxMnO3 (x =
0.45, 0.5) were investigated in the range from ambient to ~6 GPa. In
Nd0.55Sr0.45MnO3, the low-temperature ferromagnetic metallic state is
suppressed and a low temperature insulating state is induced by pressure. In
Nd0.5Sr0.5MnO3, the CE-type antiferromagnetic charge-ordering state is
suppressed by pressure. Under pressure, both samples have a similar electron
transport behavior although their ambient ground states are much different. It
is surmised that pressure induces an A-type antiferromagnetic state at low
temperature in both compounds
Simple Metals at High Pressure
In this lecture we review high-pressure phase transition sequences exhibited
by simple elements, looking at the examples of the main group I, II, IV, V, and
VI elements. General trends are established by analyzing the changes in
coordination number on compression. Experimentally found phase transitions and
crystal structures are discussed with a brief description of the present

Ionic high-pressure form of elemental boron
Boron is an element of fascinating chemical complexity. Controversies have
shrouded this element since its discovery was announced in 1808: the new
'element' turned out to be a compound containing less than 60-70 percent of
boron, and it was not until 1909 that 99-percent pure boron was obtained. And
although we now know of at least 16 polymorphs, the stable phase of boron is
not yet experimentally established even at ambient conditions. Boron's
complexities arise from frustration: situated between metals and insulators in
the periodic table, boron has only three valence electrons, which would favour
metallicity, but they are sufficiently localized that insulating states emerge.
However, this subtle balance between metallic and insulating states is easily
shifted by pressure, temperature and impurities. Here we report the results of
high-pressure experiments and ab initio evolutionary crystal structure
predictions that explore the structural stability of boron under pressure and,
strikingly, reveal a partially ionic high-pressure boron phase. This new phase
is stable between 19 and 89 GPa, can be quenched to ambient conditions, and has
a hitherto unknown structure (space group Pnnm, 28 atoms in the unit cell)
consisting of icosahedral B12 clusters and B2 pairs in a NaCl-type arrangement.
We find that the ionicity of the phase affects its electronic bandgap, infrared
adsorption and dielectric constants, and that it arises from the different
electronic properties of the B2 pairs and B12 clusters and the resultant charge

Optical properties of MgH2 measured in situ in a novel gas cell for ellipsometry/spectrophotometry
The dielectric properties of alpha-MgH2 are investigated in the photon energy
range between 1 and 6.5 eV. For this purpose, a novel sample configuration and
experimental setup are developed that allow both optical transmission and
ellipsometric measurements of a transparent thin film in equilibrium with
hydrogen. We show that alpha-MgH2 is a transparent, colour neutral insulator
with a band gap of 5.6 +/- 0.1 eV. It has an intrinsic transparency of about
80% over the whole visible spectrum. The dielectric function found in this work
confirms very recent band structure calculations using the GW approximation by
Alford and Chou [J.A. Alford and M.Y. Chou (unpublished)]. As Pd is used as a

High-pressure structural behavior of large-void CoSn-type intermetallics: Experiments and first-principles calculations
Attitudes towards complementary and alternative medicine in chronic pain syndromes: a questionnaire-based comparison between primary headache and low back pain
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) is widely used and popular among patients with primary headache or low back pain (LBP). Aim of the study was to analyze attitudes of headache and LBP patients towards the use of CAM.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Two questionnaire-based surveys were applied comparing 432 primary headache and 194 LBP patients.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In total, 84.75% of all patients reported use of CAM; with significantly more LBP patients. The most frequently-used CAM therapies in headache were acupuncture (71.4%), massages (56.4%), and thermotherapy (29.2%), in LBP thermotherapy (77.4%), massages (62.7%), and acupuncture (51.4%). The most frequent attitudes towards CAM use in headache vs. LBP: "leave nothing undone" (62.5% vs. 52.1%; p = 0.006), "take action against the disease" (56.8% vs. 43.2%; p = 0.006). Nearly all patients with previous experience with CAM currently use CAM in both conditions (93.6% in headache; 100% in LBP). However, the majority of the patients had no previous experience.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Understanding motivations for CAM treatment is important, because attitudes derive from wishes for non-pharmacological treatment, to be more involved in treatment and avoid side effects. Despite higher age and more permanent pain in LBP, both groups show high use of CAM with only little specific difference in preferred methods and attitudes towards CAM use. This may reflect deficits and unfulfilled goals in conventional treatment. Maybe CAM can decrease the gap between patients' expectations about pain therapy and treatment reality, considering that both conditions are often chronic diseases, causing high burdens for daily life.</p
Building leaders for the UN Ocean Science Decade: a guide to supporting early career women researchers within academic marine research institutions
Diverse and inclusive marine research is paramount to addressing ocean sustainability challenges in the 21st century, as envisioned by the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. Despite increasing efforts to diversify ocean science, women continue to face barriers at various stages of their career, which inhibits their progression to leadership within academic institutions. In this perspective, we draw on the collective experiences of thirty-four global women leaders, bolstered by a narrative review, to identify practical strategies and actions that will help empower early career women researchers to become the leaders of tomorrow. We propose five strategies: (i) create a more inclusive culture, (ii) ensure early and equitable career development opportunities for women ECRs, (iii) ensure equitable access to funding for women ECRs, (iv) offer mentoring opportunities and, (v) create flexible, family-friendly environments. Transformational, meaningful, and lasting change will only be achieved through commitment and collaborative action across various scales and by multiple stakeholders
