    The Political Economy of the Sino-American Imbalance

    This thesis explores the development of the Sino-American imbalance between the mid-1990s and 2007. Addressing this issue, most mainstream economists have mainly concerned themselves with whether it is a natural reflection of cross-country differences in underlying ‘market fundamentals’ or an outcome of ‘misguided’ state policies which require corrective policy actions. On the other hand, international political economists have focused on its implications for inter-state power relations: whether it is a reflection of the US’ lasting hegemonic power based on the unique status of the dollar or a symptom of the rise of China as a new centre of the global political economy. In distinction to these existing views, this thesis focuses on the fundamental social foundation of the Sino-American global imbalance with the help of an Open Marxist account of capitalist social relations, and interprets the phenomenon as a form of the contradictory process of capital accumulation mediated by states’ economic policies. By analysing the social context of the contradictory rise of China as a surplus-running ‘factory of the world’ together with the contradictory rise of the US as a debt-ridden ‘consumption market of the world’ from the mid-1990s, this thesis lays out three arguments on the nature of the Sino-American imbalance. First, it is argued that what is called ‘misguided’ policies were employed by each state as a governing strategy securing reproduction of social relations in the face of an accumulation crisis, and thus the root cause of the imbalance was not the policies themselves but the crisis-tendency inherent in the capitalist mode of production. Second, this thesis argues that the imbalance was managed through de-facto international cooperation between the global centre of production (China) and the global centre of circulation (the US) which are mutually dependent in sustaining accumulation within their respective territories. Third, this thesis maintains that the cooperative relations conducive to sustaining growth in the form of a growing bilateral imbalance were fundamentally contradictory relations, helping productive forces in China maximize themselves without regard for the limited markets, and at the same time allowing credit in the US to expand regardless of the debtors’ ability to service the accumulated debts, thus amplifying the possibility of a crisis on the world market. Consequently, the Sino-American imbalance was a perverted form of international cooperation between China and the US for sustaining accumulation and securing reproduction of capitalist social relations

    Search Tree Generation for the Exception Handling of E-Commerce Delivery Process

    A business process management system (BPMS) offers the facility to define new processes or update the existing processes. However, exceptional or non-routine tasks require the intervention of domain experts or generation of the situation specific resolution process. This paper assumes that sufficient amount of business process exception handling cases are stored in the process repository. Since the retrieval of the best exception handling process requires good understanding about the exceptional situation, context awareness is an important issue. To facilitate the representation of the exceptional situation and to enable the selection of the best exception handling process, we adopted the `situation variable' and `decision variable' construct. A case example for exception handling in the e-commerce delivery process is provided to illustrate how the proposed construct works. We applied the C5.0 algorithm to build the optimum search tree

    STRAIN BEHAVIOUR OF ULTRA-HIGH-STRENGTH CONCRETE UNDER THE ELEVATED TEMPERATURE AND 0.25FCK LOADING

    The high-temperature creep of Ultra-High-Strength Concrete (UHSC) has been investigated in this study. The purpose of this study is to evaluated total strain and high-temperature creep at elevated temperatures under loading condition of UHSC. To evaluate the strain behaviour of UHSC at elevated temperatures, ϕ100 mm × 200 mm cylindrical specimens of UHSC with compressive strengths of 80, 130 and 180 MPa concrete were heated to 700 °C at a rate of 1 °C/min. The total strain and high-temperature-creep were measured under the loading condition of 0.25 of the compressive strength at room temperature. As results, Total strain of UHSC increased showing shrinkage with increasing compressive strength. The high-temperature creep of UHSC increased with the temperature and higher level of compressive strength showed bigger high-temperature creep

    Effects of education on low-phosphate diet and phosphate binder intake to control serum phosphate among maintenance hemodialysis patients: A randomized controlled trial.

    Background:For phosphate control, patient education is essential due to the limited clearance of phosphate by dialysis. However, well-designed randomized controlled trials about dietary and phosphate binder education have been scarce. Methods:We enrolled maintenance hemodialysis patients and randomized them into an education group (n = 48) or a control group (n = 22). We assessed the patients' drug compliance and their knowledge about the phosphate binder using a questionnaire. Results:The primary goal was to increase the number of patients who reached a calcium-phosphorus product of lower than 55. In the education group, 36 (75.0%) patients achieved the primary goal, as compared with 16 (72.7%) in the control group (P = 0.430). The education increased the proportion of patients who properly took the phosphate binder (22.9% vs. 3.5%, P = 0.087), but not to statistical significance. Education did not affect the amount of dietary phosphate intake per body weight (education vs. control: -1.18 ± 3.54 vs. -0.88 ± 2.04 mg/kg, P = 0.851). However, the dietary phosphate-to-protein ratio tended to be lower in the education group (-0.64 ± 2.04 vs. 0.65 ± 3.55, P = 0.193). The education on phosphate restriction affected neither the Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment score (0.17 ± 4.58 vs. -0.86 ± 3.86, P = 0.363) nor the level of dietary protein intake (-0.03 ± 0.33 vs. -0.09 ± 0.18, P = 0.569). Conclusion:Education did not affect the calcium-phosphate product. Education on the proper timing of phosphate binder intake and the dietary phosphate-to-protein ratio showed marginal efficacy

    Patterns of Using Complementary and Alternative Medicine by Stroke Patients at Two University Hospitals in Korea

    This study measured the prevalence of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use among Korean stroke patients. Questionnaire-based 20-min interviews were conducted at the hospitals by a trained nurse after an outpatient visit. It included questions on demographic information, clinical information and the utilization of CAM. Of 304 stroke-patient respondents, 164 (54%) had used CAM, of which 66% had started taking CAM products following suggestions from family members and other relatives. Of the 57% of users who felt that CAM was effective, 84% considered that it improved the symptoms of stroke and 16% felt it was effective in achieving psychological relaxation. Of the eight CAM categories used by respondents, 92% used traditional Oriental medical treatments, 36% used plant- and animal-derived over-the-counter health care products, 24% used minerals and vitamins, and 11% used manual therapies. The majority of stroke patients (68%) were trying a new type of CAM, and half of the respondents (45%) relied on the knowledge of their general practitioner about CAMs when deciding whether to use them. Most of the stroke patients in this study used CAM, and a half of them reported beneficial effects. Despite the presence of adverse side effects, they tended to be used without discussion with chief physicians, and hence physicians should be actively involved in the usage of CAM

    Charge-spin correlation in van der Waals antiferromagenet NiPS3

    Strong charge-spin coupling is found in a layered transition-metal trichalcogenide NiPS3, a van derWaals antiferromagnet, from our study of the electronic structure using several experimental and theoretical tools: spectroscopic ellipsometry, x-ray absorption and photoemission spectroscopy, and density-functional calculations. NiPS3 displays an anomalous shift in the optical spectral weight at the magnetic ordering temperature, reflecting a strong coupling between the electronic and magnetic structures. X-ray absorption, photoemission and optical spectra support a self-doped ground state in NiPS3. Our work demonstrates that layered transition-metal trichalcogenide magnets are a useful candidate for the study of correlated-electron physics in two-dimensional magnetic material.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figur

    Observation of Seventh Harmonic Generation from a Subwavelength Dielectric Resonator

    Generation of higher optical harmonics has recently entered the realm of subwavelength optics, and it has been achieved in gratings and metasurfaces. Here, we demonstrate the source of high-harmonic generation scaled down to a subwavelength dielectric resonator. We study fifth and seventh optical harmonics generated from an AlGaAs resonator designed to support a bound state in the continuum. Higher optical harmonics can serve as a source of radiation in unconventional spectral ranges, such as the extreme-UV, and our work paves the way to the light sources with subwavelength volumes.Comment: 2 figures, 3 pages, to be publishe

    Enhanced five-photon photoluminescence in subwavelength AlGaAs resonators

    Multiphoton processes of absorption photoluminescence have enabled a wide range of applications including three-dimensional microfabrication, data storage, and biological imaging. While the applications of two-photon and three-photon absorption and luminescence have matured considerably, higher-order photoluminescence processes remain more challenging to study due to their lower efficiency, particularly in subwavelength systems. Here we report the observation of it five-photon luminescence from a single subwavelength nanoantenna at room temperature enabled by the Mie resonances. We excite an AlGaAs resonator at around 3.6 um and observe photoluminescence at around 740 nm. We show that the interplay of the Mie multipolar modes at the subwavelength scale can enhance the efficiency of the five-photon luminescence by at least four orders of magnitude, being limited only by sensitivity of our detector. Our work paves the way towards applications of higher-order multiphoton processes at the subwavelength scales enabled by the physics of Mie resonances.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figure
