Concepts for waterfront developments, focusing on Siofok, Hungary

The paper shows a general introduction about the connection of cities, particularly Siófok, the ‘capital’ of Lake Balaton and water surfaces through three topics: the first part deals with the past and present of waterfronts, by exploring the most important principles in their design, then describes the significant tools and methods of the Hungarian cities around Lake Balaton, the most important water surface of Hungary, related to the areas adjacent to the water. Finally, it reveals a complex design work by the authors for refurbishing the waterfront in Siófok, based on a national competition

The impact of building orientation on energy performance: A case study in new Minia, Egypt

The energy consumption of residential buildings represents the majority part of energy usage in Egypt. The aim of this study is to assess the energy performance of a dwelling in New Minia City, Egypt through different orientations. The energy consumption of the case study building is 52560 kWh annually. However, this energy demand could be reduced by 5.8% if the building is oriented to the north direction. The difference of the energy consumption between the best and the worst building orientations, North and South, respectively, reached up to 7.5%. The location of the actual building has a noticeable effect on the energy consumption

Renewal of a Housing District from the sixties in Budapest

At the time of its construction the housing estate József Attila (1956-1963) in Budapest was a sample project (installation, interior spaces, new structures and materials) which has been obsoleted in the last 50 years. After winning the architectural and urban competition using open-minded architectural thinking that can make the housing estate a new role model again - increasing existing values and give new ones, the paper presents the principles of design which could be standard for neighborhoods of similar history
