    Cactus: chemical, nutraceutical composition and potential bio-pharmacological properties

    Cactus species are plants that grow in the arid and semiarid regions of the world. They have long fascinated the attention of the scientific community due to their unusual biology. Cactus species are used for a variety of purposes, such as food, fodder, ornamental, and as medicinal plants. In the last regard, they have been used in traditional medicine for eras by the ancient people to cure several diseases. Recent scientific investigations suggest that cactus materials may be used as a source of naturally-occurring products, such as mucilage, fiber, pigments, and antioxidants. For this reason, numerous species under this family are becoming endangered and extinct. This review provides an overview of the habitat, classification, phytochemistry, chemical constituents, extraction and isolation of bioactive compounds, nutritional and pharmacological potential with pre-clinical and clinical studies of different Cactus species.     Standardizing data reporting in the research community to enhance the utility of open data for SARS-CoV-2 wastewater surveillance

    SARS-CoV-2 RNA detection in wastewater is being rapidly developed and adopted as a public health monitoring tool worldwide. With wastewater surveillance programs being implemented across many different scales and by many different stakeholders, it is critical that data collected and shared are accompanied by an appropriate minimal amount of meta-information to enable meaningful interpretation and use of this new information source and intercomparison across datasets. While some databases are being developed for specific surveillance programs locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally, common globally-adopted data standards have not yet been established within the research community. Establishing such standards will require national and international consensus on what meta-information should accompany SARS-CoV-2 wastewater measurements. To establish a recommendation on minimum information to accompany reporting of SARS-CoV-2 occurrence in wastewater for the research community, the United States National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Coordination Network on Wastewater Surveillance for SARS-CoV-2 hosted a workshop in February 2021 with participants from academia, government agencies, private companies, wastewater utilities, public health laboratories, and research institutes. This report presents the primary two outcomes of the workshop: (i) a recommendation on the set of minimum meta-information that is needed to confidently interpret wastewater SARS-CoV-2 data, and (ii) insights from workshop discussions on how to improve standardization of data reporting

    El presente estudio tuvo como objetivo general; determinar de qué manera se relaciona la problemática de violencia contra la mujer y la importancia de la Ley Nº 30364 en Lima – 2021. Aunado a ello, la violencia contra la mujer refiere cualquier acción que les cause daño, sufrimiento físico, psicológico, etc. Estos acontecimientos van en contra de los derechos fundamentales, es así se que el Estado actúa estableciendo políticas de prevención para combatir este fenómeno social, ante ello se tiene a la Ley N° 30364, cuyo objetivo yace en prevenir, sancionar y erradicar esta problemática. No obstante, a pesar de contar con esta indispensable normativa, el problema de violencia contra la mujer aun continua, siendo necesario la intervención del legislador mediante políticas legislativas. La metodología indica que se aplicó un estudio básico puro, un enfoque cuantitativo, un diseño correlacional no experimental y transversal, para la recolección de datos se aplicó la técnica de la encuesta, así como el instrumento del cuestionario. Por último, se llegó a la conclusión de que, la violencia contra la mujer es un fenómeno social que implica una serie de actos dañinos hacia la mujer, siendo el sufrimiento físico, sexual o mental. Además, los resultados de le estudio han manifestados que la violencia contra la mujer a estado en aumento, por lo que se hace necesario que Estado peruano implemente medidas legislativas mediante políticas públicas para combatir este problema social

    The role of hormones on toxoplasma gondii infection: A systematic review

    Background: Toxoplasma gondii is the causal agent of toxoplasmosis in which one third of the world's population has been infected. In pregnant women, it may cause abortion and severe damage to the fetal central nervous system. During pregnancy, the prevalence of toxoplasmosis increases throughout the second and third quarter of gestation, simultaneously progesterone and 17?-estradiol also increase. Thus, it has been suggested that these hormones can aggravate or reduce parasite reproduction. The aim of this study was reviewing the relationship between hormones and infection caused by T. gondii in several experimental animal models and humans, focused mainly on: a) congenital transmission, b) parasite reproduction, c) strain virulence, d) levels of hormone in host induced by T. gondii infection and e) participation of hormone receptors in Toxoplasma gondii infection. Are the hormones specific modulators of T. gondii infection? A systematic review methodology was used to consult several databases (Pub Med, Lilacs, Medline, Science direct, Scielo, Ebsco, Sprinker, Wiley and Google Scholar) dated from September, 2013 to March, 2014. Results: 30 studies were included; eight studies in humans and 22 in animals and cell cultures. In the human studies, the most studied hormones were testosterone, progesterone, prolactin and 17-? estradiol. Type I (RH and BK) and Type II (Prugniaud, SC, ME49, T45, P78 and T38) were the most frequent experimental strains. Conclusions: Thirty-five years have passed since the first studies regarding Toxoplasma gondii infection and its relationship with hormones. This systematic review suggests that hormones modulate Toxoplasma gondii infection in different animal models. However, given that data were not comparable, further studies are required to determine the mechanism of hormone action in the Toxoplasma gondii infectious process. 2014 Galván-Ramírez, Gutiérrez-maldonado, Verduzco-grijalva and Dueñas-Jiménez

    Phenolic compounds: Natural alternative in inflammation treatment. A Review

    Inflammation is a biological defense mechanism caused by the interruption of the tissue homeostasis caused by the presence of a biological, chemical, or physical agents in the body; immune system produces a series of pro-inflammatory mediators, however their overproduction, as occurs in chronic inflammation, might lead to the occurrence of several chronic diseases. For this reason, slowing down the inflammation process becomes very important, and with this purpose non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs are generally used with the subsequent occurrence of adverse side effects. As an alternative in inflammation treatment, folklore medicine has used several plants and herbs with minimal or null side effects, with the phenolic compounds being one of their principal components.     Flavonoids as Cytokine Modulators: A Possible Therapy for Inflammation-Related Diseases

    High levels of cytokines, such as interleukin (IL)-1β, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and IL-6, are associated with chronic diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, atherosclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease and cancer; therefore cytokine inhibition might be an important target for the treatment of these diseases. Most drugs used to alleviate some inflammation-related symptoms act by inhibiting cyclooxygenases activity or by blocking cytokine receptors. Nevertheless, these drugs have secondary effects when used on a long-term basis. It has been mentioned that flavonoids, namely quercetin, apigenin and luteolin, reduce cytokine expression and secretion. In this regard, flavonoids may have therapeutical potential in the treatment of inflammation-related diseases as cytokine modulators.     A sustainable wholesome foodstuff : health effects and potential dietotherapy applications of yacon

    A sustainable food supply is an ever-growing public and planetary health concern influenced by food culture, food practices, and dietary patterns. Globally, the consumption of plant foods that offer physiological and biochemical benefits is increasing. In recent years, products made from yacon (Smallanthus sonchifolius) tubers and leaves, e.g., in the form of syrup, powder, and herbal tea, have steadily emerged with scientific evidence to validate their possible health claims. Yacon was introduced to New Zealand in 1966, and its products can now be produced on a commercial scale. This paper reviews literature published mainly in the last 10 years concerning the health-related properties of yacon as a wholesome foodstuff and its bioactive components, e.g., fructooligosaccharides. Literature was sourced from Web of Science, PubMed, EBSCO Health, and Google Scholar up to June 2019. The potential markets for yacon in the field of food technology and new dietotherapy applications are discussed. Furthermore, the unique features of New Zealand-produced yacon syrup are introduced as a case study.
