About a case report of giant hydronephrosis

Introduction. Our objective is to report a case of an infrequent entity as the giant hydronephrosis. Case Report. We report the case of an 82-syear-old male referred for a poor general condition. A radiological study revealed a great left hydronephrosis secondary to an urothelial carcinoma. The patient died due to his poor general condition. A histological diagnosis revealed a transitional cell carcinoma of renal pelvis and ureter and atrophic renal parenchyma. Conclusion. Giant hydronephrosis represents a very often entity to be taken into account in cases with big cystic abdominal masses in absence of unilateral or bilateral kidney. Simple nephrectomy is the treatment of choice in most cases. Nevertheless, in cases of nonsubsidiary surgery, percutaneous drainage may be necessary

Bladder endometriosis and endocervicosis: presentation of 2 cases with endoscopic management and review of literature

Urinary tract endometriosis and endocervicosis are an uncommon pathologic finding, with a common embryological origin. We present 2 cases of female patients with bladder mass. The first one was a finding of a nodular formation in the bladder during study of a nonviable foetus and the second was an incidental finding of a neoformation in the fundus of the bladder during the realization of an ultrasound. Impact of body composition on physical fitness components in the Mexican Navy: Is overweight an issue?

Overweight and inadequate physical fitness are critical variables that impact directly on the health, wellbeing of service members and military readiness, characteristics required to overcome dangerous situations during sea rescues and in the first line of combat in the Mexican Navy. Here we determined the impact of body composition (BC) on physical fitness components (PFC) [cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and muscle strength-resistance (MSR)] of 110 marines, rescue swimmers, and divers of the Mexican Navy classified as overweight. We found significant differences in medians of BC and PFC among groups (p < 0.001). The WHO and military BMI showed 59 (54%) and 16 (15%) individuals as overweight, respectively. All groups showed CRF adequate for their age, but only 26 (51%) and 14 (24%) classified as normal and overweight (WHO), respectively, had adequate CFR (METs ˃12) (p = 0.003) for physical demands of military tasks. BMI in overweight at expenses of high BFP, without cardiovascular risk represents an operational task advantage that will lead to reach the balance between physical fitness, health, and military readiness

Gender differences and management of stroke risk of nonvalvular atrial fibrillation in an upper middle-income country: Insights from the CARMEN-AF registry

Background: Atrial Fibrillation (AF) is associated with an increased risk of stroke and systemic embolism. Several studies have suggested that female AF patients could have a greater risk for stroke. There is scarce information about clinical characteristics and use of antithrombotic therapies in Latin American patients with nonvalvular AF. Objective: To describe the gender differences in clinical characteristics, thromboembolic risk, and antithrombotic therapy of patients with nonvalvular AF recruited in Mexico, an upper middle-income country, into the prospective national CARMEN-AF Registry. Methods: A total of 1423 consecutive patients, with at least one thromboembolic risk factor were enrolled in CARMEN-AF Registry during a three-year period (2014–2017). They were categorized according to Gender. Results: Overall, 48.6% were women, mean age 70 ± 12 years. Diabetes, smoking, alcoholism, non-ischemic cardiomyopathy, coronary artery disease, and obstructive sleep apnea were higher in men. Most women were found with paroxysmal AF (40.6%), and most men with permanent AF (44.0%). No gender differences were found in the use of vitamin K antagonists (VKA) (30.5% in women vs. 28.0% in men). No gender differences were found in the use of direct oral anticoagulants (DOAC) (33.8% women vs 35.4% men). Conclusions: CARMEN-AF Registry demonstrates that in Mexico, regardless of gender, a large proportion of patients remain undertreated. No gender differences were found in the use of VKA or DOAC. Este trabajo obtuvo la segunda mención especial de la modalidad B de los Premios Joaquín Sama 2006Se describe un concurso que consistía en realizar varias pruebas y que pretendía preparar a los alumnos para que tuvieran un comportamiento adecuado en el centro escolar.
