    Bacterial ‘Cell’ Phones: Do cell phones carry potential pathogens?

    Cell phones are important companions for professionals especially health care workers (HCWs) for better communication in hospital. The present study compared the nature of the growth of potentially pathogenic bacterial flora on cell phones in hospital and community. 75% cell phones from both the categories grew at least one potentially pathogenic organism. Cell phones from HCWs grew significantly more potential pathogens like MRSA (20%), Acinetobacter species (5%), Pseudomonas species (2.5%) as compared to the non HCWs. 97.5% HCWs use their cell phone in the hospital, 57.5% never cleaned their cell phone and 20% admitted that they did not wash their hands before or after attending patients, although majority (77.5%) knows that cell phones can have harmful colonization and act as vector for nosocomial infections. It is recommended, therefore, that cell phones in the hospital should be regularly decontaminated. Moreover, utmost emphasis needs to be paid to hand washing practices among HCWs

    Using GIS and Remote Sensing to Map Grassroots Sustainable Development for a Small NGO in Nepal

    Geographic information systems, through analysis and visualizations, can aid in pursuing and improving sustainable development. Thousands of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in developing countries provide a wide range of services and local organizations with fewer resources must often be more efficient to offer their services effectively. The accessibility of spatial data for assessment and, in turn, improved planning could enable these organizations to increase efficiency, thereby maximizing aid and sustainable development, as well as the number of people helped in a variety of ways. Focusing on mapping outreach and quantifying land use for a locally run NGO in Nepal, this study mapped and established a geodatabase of ongoing and completed outreach projects, as well as quantified land use using an unmanned aerial vehicle to gather high-resolution imagery at the site. The NGO, a grassroots foundation south of Kathmandu, provides workshops and funding for sustainable and empowerment projects and opportunities for learning through workshops. They were also able to provide significant disaster relief to surrounding communities following the 2015 Gorkha earthquake. We found that most programs are spatially centered near the foundation, with some programs reaching across districts. Land use at the foundation is predominantly biodynamic gardening followed by education (classrooms). We created a Story Map to share the results with the NGO and local community. The study provides baseline data for the organization that previously had none, with the goal of maximizing efficiency and ultimately increasing capacity

    Generation, characterization and application of atmospheric pressure plasma jet

    The development of a non-thermal plasma jet with a capillary configuration working at atmospheric pressure is reported in this paper. The plasma jet is powered by a power source with frequency of several kilohertz. The working gas is argon. The plasma obtained has been characterized by optical emission spectroscopic measurements and electrical measurements of the discharge using voltage and current probes. The electron temperature has been estimated by using the modified Boltzmann plot method utilizing the Ar 4p-4s transition. The electron temperatures at various positions along the plasma jet length have been obtained and it is found that the electron temperature decreases at position further from orifice. The electron density has been estimated from current and voltage measurements using the power balance method. The effects of gas flow rate, applied voltage and frequency on the characteristics of the plasma jet have also been investigated. The applications of the atmospheric pressure plasma jet (APPJ) developed to modify the surface properties of Polyethyleneterephthalate (PET) and polycarbonate (PC) have been tested. Our results showed that the atmospheric pressure non-thermal plasma jet can be effectively used to enhance the surface wettability and surface energy of the PET and PC. The plasma jet has also been tested for inactivation of prokaryotic cells (Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus). In the case of E. coli, better than 4 log10 reduction can be achieved. The effect of plasma jet on the pH of cell culture medium has suggested that the plasma species, particularly the electrons, are solely responsible for the effect of inactivation of living cells

    Genetic divergence in Chrysanthemum (Dendranthema x grandiflora Tzvelev) based on morphological traits

    Genetic diversity of thirty-one genotypes of Chrysanthemum were analysed for various growth and flowering related traits. Analysis of variance revealed significant differences among the genotypes for all the morphological traits studied. The clustering pattern based on Mahalanobis D2 statistics categorised genotypes into six distinct clusters. The largest cluster i.e. cluster III composed of eleven genotypes followed by cluster II with nine genotypes, cluster I having eight genotypes and cluster IV, V, and VI with one genotype each. The maximum inter-cluster distance was recorded between clusters IV and cluster V (376.87) followed by clusters IV and cluster VI (344.96) and, cluster II and cluster IV (196.81). The maximum intra-cluster distance was observed for cluster III (56.57), followed by cluster II (46.87) and cluster I (29.52). Among all the clusters, genotypes in cluster II recorded highest cluster mean values for number of branches per plant (7.15), number of leaves (119.72) and flowers (91.69) per plant. Among nine characters, number of flowers per plant contributed maximum to divergence (32.26%). Therefore, for chrysanthemum improvement, highly diverse genotypes can be used as parents for crossing to generate high variability

    Peas Please: Making a pledge for more veg

    Research suggests that eating vegetables benefits both human health and the environment. However, in the UK, very few people are eating enough vegetables. This is contributing to the global burden of diet‐related disease and associated costs, as well as undermining the possibility of a sustainable UK food system. The Peas Please initiative was launched in 2017 to encourage organisations and businesses across the food system to pledge their commitment to helping the British public increase their vegetable consumption. Since the implementation of the Peas Please initiative 95 organisations have pledged to support Peas Please and, at the time of writing, an additional 89.9 million portions of vegetables have been grown, served and sold by pledgers. This article describes the Peas Please initiative and its rationale, highlights some of the key outcomes of the programme, and outlines next steps for increasing commitment to the programme

    Impact of Using Different Stocking Rates of Goats Under Pine Plantation on Plant Species Occurrence and Animal Productivity

    Abstract The study assessed the impact of using different stocking rates of goats under pine plantation on plant species occurrence and animal productivity. It was conducted on an 11 year-old loblolly pine plantation site in Epes, Alabama from July to October 2011. Thirty-six Kiko crossbred male goat kids of 4 to 5 months of age were assigned to different stocking rates, namely, low (4 goats/acre), medium (8 goats/acre), and high (12 goats/acre) with three replications each. Forage composition, animal daily gain (ADG) and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) were monitored. Bahia grass (Paspalum notatum) was the most dominant grass species across all treatments. Quantities of understory plant species decreased across all stocking densities with season, but there were no statistical differences (p \u3e 0.05); ADG and BUN were similar.
