    A Comparison of Veblen and Schumpeter on Technology

    This paper aims at demonstrating the significance of two alternative approaches developed by Veblen and Schumpeter to technology underlying recent institutionalist and evolutionary stances. It should be mentioned that it is not the primary object of this paper to specify their clear-cut disagreement about the characterization of technology and the process of technical advance. Instead, it is engage with providing with an overall understanding of technological motion in capitalist accumulation processes by reconciling the two approaches in a meaningful way. Thus, this comparative analysis based upon their congruent and conflicting arguments presents us not only a general review and the solid foundations of an institutionalist approach to technological phenomena, but also an alternative conceptual framework for science and technology policy studies.

    In recent years, people have begun to give further emphasis to the external beauty, especially for their hair. Except drugs with proven effectiveness, complementary and alternative treatment options that have not yet been clarified of their effectiveness and side effect profiles have been used for centuries. Many plants or their extracts are widely used to prevent hair loss and treat alopecia (e.g., androgenetic alopecia, alopecia areata, or traction alopecia) worldwide, especially in Far Eastern countries. The mechanisms of action of these plants are still unknown. Although there are little randomized-controlled studies investigating the effectiveness in the treatment of hair loss, reported results have demonstrated that complementary and alternative medicine will become much more popular in the near future

    Secondary Teachers’ Noticing of Students’ Mathematical Thinking as They Participate in a Professional Development Program Centered on Task-Based Student Interviews

    Teacher’s noticing of students’ mathematical thinking has been an important focus of research in the past two decades (e.g., Jacobs et al., 2010; Sherin et al., 2011). Noticing matters, but it is not an end in itself (Schoenfeld, 2011). It is operationalized within the context of teachers’ dispositions and knowledge which shape decisions teachers make while responding to student thinking and planning the next instructional steps. In order for teachers to adapt productive beliefs about how children learn and shift to student-centered instruction, they need to acknowledge the importance of understanding students\u27 existing conceptions of mathematical ideas (Carpenter & Lehrer, 1999). A professional development (PD) program with a central focus of task-based student interviews can potentially improve their noticing of student thinking. In this study, I report on the experiences of three middle school mathematics teachers who participated in such a program. I used multiple-case study methodology and examined teachers’ written responses to video-based noticing prompts as well as their discussions of selected interview clips shown during the PD sessions. The results indicated that teachers initially focused on interviewer actions and over time, attended to and interpreted students’ thinking in a more comprehensive manner. This study supported others’ findings (e.g., Krupa et al, 2017) that teachers did not score high in responding to students’ mathematical thinking.     The determination of sexual size dimorphism in long-snouted seahorse (Hippocampus guttulatus Cuvier, 1829) from the coast of Aegean sea

    390-397The study investigates the sexual dimorphism in 205 samples (♀:98; ♂:107) consisting of newly deceased fishes seen in the fishnets of the commercial fishers and long-snouted seahorses (Hippocampus guttulatus Cuvier, 1829) obtained in two research projects, in the coasts of Aegean Sea. All samples were divided by their standard-length groups (I: 60-89 mm; II: 90-120 mm; III: > 121 mm) of morphometric measurements. The sexes of the species differed in terms of tail length (TaL), dorsal fin base length (DL), trunk depth (TD9-10), and trunk length (TrL) (P H. guttulatus distributed in the coasts of the Aegean Sea showed differentiation starting from length group II, it is understood that, there was a sexual dimorphism in terms of TrL and TaL which determine the body size in mate selection

    The formulation of Turkish nationhood centred around the motherland, Islam andblood formula was tried by Young Ottoman firstly and later by Young Turks. The throughout the 19th century, Ottoman ruling class was engaged in countering supremacy of European countries and northern neighbour, Russia. Nevertheless they aimed to restore Ottoman army and consolidate the "state power" with imposing institutional and political reforms. A group known as the Young Ottoman,was formed consisting of intellectuals concerned about the disintegration of Empire. The famous writer, Namik Kemal who was to be an inspiration for later generation of Turkish nationalist, popularized the notion of motherland with using nationalistic terms. In the reign of Abdulhamit II, Young Turks who organized against the Sultan, continued to promote Ottomanism. At the end of the 19th century there were four main ideological attempts focused on maintaining integrity of Ottoman state and its in definite future. Unlike Islamism, Ottomanism and Westernism; Turkish nationalism became the most popular and applicable one among the others because of the distinctive marks of Balkan Wars (1913-14) and war time atmosphere.     Viable Health Games: Elements for Success

    The main purpose of this study is to identify the elements of children's health games that have a positive impact on children’s health. The investigation is done by evaluating previous health game studies concentrating on children and five health affairs (such as asthma, cancer, diabetes, nutrition and obesity). In order to do so, firstly the topic of children’s health games is explained through its roots, as it is an interdisciplinary topic pertinent with many other fields. For this reason, the topics regarding the children’s health games as games, video games, children’s gameplay, and serious games along with health, relevant health affairs, and health promotion were covered. Secondly, the meta-study was conducted with the 56 articles on children’s health games. These 56 articles were analyzed with the coding technique defined by Charmaz’s Grounded Theory Method (Charmaz, 2006) for finding out which elements of children’s health games have a positive impact on children’s health promotion. The main result suggests that, although there are 24 different elements found and listed which all positive in their nature, their positive impact is a matter of how they are used or implemented through the consumption cycle of children’s health games and how all these elements interact with each other. In addition to this, a pragmatic proposal is formulated for possibly better or more successful health games. The study concludes with the declaration of the limitations encountered through the research and the recommendations for future research.siirretty Doriast
