    Using Cellular Automata to study the effect of competition for epidemic diseases

    AbstractCellular Automata (CA) has shown to be a valuable approach in ecological modeling, in particular when dealing with local interactions between species and their environment. A stochastic cellular automata model, which included two competitors (the inferior species which is immune to a disease and the superior one which is sensitive to the disease), is constructed. Through time series analysis and spatial pattern analysis, the influence of competition effect upon the behavior of epidemic diseases has been investigated to know whether the competition effect is in favor of epidemics control. Then, some strategies for introducing competitors to the infectious system are explored. The result shows that introducing some right competitors into the infection region may be a considerable policy. The population with high colonization rate, low extinction rate and long colonization radius is introduced preferably. The result may give us some suggestions for epidemic control in conservation of wild populations

    Sublithosphere mantle crystallization and immiscible sulphide melt segregation in continental basal magmatism: evidence from clinopyroxene megacrysts in the Cenozoic basalts of eastern China

    This study explores the effects of high-pressure crystallization and immiscible sulphide melt segregation under mantle conditions on the compositional variation of basaltic magmas, using clinopyroxene megacrysts in the Cenozoic basalts of eastern China. These clinopyroxene megacrysts are large (up to > 10 cm in size) and homogeneous at the grain scale. They were crystallized from variably evolved parental magmas and then captured by their host basalts. The large and systematic variations of [Sm/Yb]N, Lu/Hf, Fe/Mn, Sc/La, Ni and Cu with Mg# in the clinopyroxene megacrysts suggest their co-precipitation with garnet and with immiscibility between sulphide and silicate melts. This is consistent with the appearance of garnet megacrysts in the host basalts and abundant sulphide globules in the clinopyroxene megacrysts. The covariation between Ni contents of sulphide globules and Mg# of the clinopyroxene megacrysts suggests a genetic relationship between sulphide globules and clinopyroxene megacrysts. High-pressure crystallization of clinopyroxene and garnet results in decrease of Mg# and concentrations of CaO, MnO and heavy rare earth elements (e.g., Yb) and increase of Fe/Mn and [Sm/Yb]N in the residual melts. Therefore, geochemical characteristics of low Mg#, low CaO and MnO contents and high Fe/Mn and [Sm/Yb]N in basalts do not necessarily indicate a pyroxenite mantle source. In addition, caution is needed when applying the olivine addition method to infer the primary compositions of alkali basalts without considering the effects of highpressure crystallization of clinopyroxene and garnet. The calculated P-T conditions of the clinopyroxene megacrysts are close to those of the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary (LAB) beneath eastern China, and the low primitive [Sm/Yb]N (~ 4.0) of melts parental to the clinopyroxene megacrysts suggests final equilibration at relatively low pressures most likely beneath the LAB. Hence, a melt-rich layer is expected close beneath the LAB. Melt pools in this melt-rich layer provide a stable and closed environment for the growth of compositionally homogeneous clinopyroxene megacrysts. As a result, melts in these melt pools are compositionally evolved with low and variable Mg#. Subsequent pulses of melt aggregation/supply from depths with primitive compositions and high Mg# will disturb these melt pools, cause magma mixing and trigger the eruption of magmas carrying clinopyroxene and garnet megacrysts

    High frequency variations of Helicobacter pylori isolates in individual hosts in a Chinese population

    SummaryBackgroundColonization of individual hosts by multiple Helicobacter pylori genotypes may be one reason why this infection is persistent and difficult to eradicate.MethodsIn order to study the diversity of H. pylori in individuals, a modified randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) method was applied using primary culture isolates instead of passaged cultures.ResultsThe results showed that variations in H. pylori were prevalent among individuals in the Chinese population, and the incidence of multiple colonization was 99.1% (115/116), significantly higher than in other reports. Moreover, the number of RAPD genotypes was found to be significantly associated with the process of disease development (p<0.05). Indeed, a trend for a higher number of RAPD genotypes within a single host (up to five genotypes) was observed as the disease developed or became more serious. After subculturing for three generations in our experiment, some genotypes present in the primary cultures were lost. The different genotypes in one patient may have originated from a single ancestral strain, as determined by analysis of six H. pylori housekeeping gene alleles, most of which were shown to be identical.ConclusionsThese results suggest that investigating isolates of the primary culture will better reflect the H. pylori diversity in individuals. Also, they indicate that continuous variation of one strain in the gastric microenvironment may be the main cause of H. pylori diversity in individuals in the Chinese population

    The lithospheric thickness control on the compositional variation of continental intraplate basalts: A demonstration using the Cenozoic basalts and clinopyroxene megacrysts from eastern China

    Studies on intra‐plate ocean island basalts have demonstrated the control of lithosphere thickness on the extent of melting and pressure of melt extraction (i.e., the lid‐effect). However, whether lithosphere thickness also controls the composition of within‐continent basalts remains unclear. Here we test this hypothesis by studying the Cenozoic basalts containing clinopyroxene megacrysts from 10 localities throughout eastern continental China with a north‐south spatial coverage in excess of 2500 km. Indeed, the geochemical parameters (e.g., abundances and ratios of major and trace elements) correlate well with the depth of the lithosphere‐asthenosphere boundary (LAB) calculated using the clinopyroxene barometry, showing significant lithospheric thickness control on basalt compositions. These observations offer further evidence for melt pooling (a melt rich layer) close beneath the LAB as a “stable magma reservoir” for crystallizing compositionally uniform clinopyroxene megacrysts to be carried by subsequent pulses of melt transport and eruption

    Correlation between chemical composition, EHGE and TME of corn for ducks

    Correlations between chemical composition, enzymatic hydrolysate gross energy (EHGE), and true metabolizable energy (TME) of corn for ducks were investigated. Twenty-two corn samples were collected from various regions in 11 provinces of China. The crude protein (CP), ether extract (EE), neutral detergent fibre (NDF), Ash, gross energy (GE), dry matter (DM), amylopectin (AP), amylose (AM), total starch (TS), and AP/AM were determined for each sample. Five of the samples of corn were chosen at the mean, mean ± 1 standard deviation (SD), and mean ± 2 SD based on AP/AM. The EHGE of these samples was analysed using the pepsin-artificial small intestinal fluid enzymatic method. These five samples were also force-fed to male Cherry Valley ducks to assay their TME. Finally, correlation analyses were performed, and regression equations were established. Ash content, GE, and TS were highly related to EHGE. Univariate prediction equations were EHGE = 11.8566Ash-0.0421 (P &lt;0.05), EHGE = 0.1535GE1.5642 (P &lt;0.05), and EHGE = 0.1020TS1.1561 (P &lt;0.05). The total starch, AP/AM, and ash of the chemical compositions were highly related to TME. The corresponding univariate regression equations were TME = 21.9355TS-0.0910 (P &lt;0.05), TME = 15.6590AP/AM-0.0559 (P &lt;0.05), and TME = 15.0778Ash0.0442 (P &lt;0.05). The mean EHGE was equivalent to 78.5% of TME, but their correlation coefficient was low.     Coping with COVID-19: Exposure to COVID-19 and Negative Impact on Livelihood Predict Elevated Mental Health Problems in Chinese Adults

    The COVID-19 pandemic might lead to more mental health problems. However, few studies have examined sleep problems, depression, and posttraumatic symptoms among the general adult population during the COVID-19 outbreak, and little is known about coping behaviors. This survey was conducted online in China from February 1st to February 10th, 2020. Quota sampling was used to recruit 2993 Chinese citizens aged ≄18 years old. Mental health problems were assessed with the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorders (PTSD) Checklist for the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression inventory, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Exposure to COVID-19 was measured with questions about residence at outbreak, personal exposure, media exposure, and impact on livelihood. General coping style was measured by the brief Coping Style Questionnaire (SCSQ). Respondents were also asked 12 additional questions about COVID-19 specific coping behaviors. Direct exposure to COVID-19 instead of the specific location of (temporary) residence within or outside the epicenter (Wuhan) of the pandemic seems important (standardized beta: 0.05, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.02-0.09). Less mental health problems were also associated with less intense exposure through the media (standardized beta: -0.07, 95% CI: -0.10--0.03). Perceived negative impact of the pandemic on livelihood showed a large effect size in predicting mental health problems (standardized beta: 0.15, 95% CI: 0.10-0.19). More use of cognitive and prosocial coping behaviors were associated with less mental health problems (standardized beta: -0.30, 95% CI: -0.34--0.27). Our study suggests that the mental health consequences of the lockdown impact on livelihood should not be underestimated. Building on cognitive coping behaviors reappraisal or cognitive behavioral treatments may be most promising

    Faithful remote state preparation using finite classical bits and a non-maximally entangled state

    We present many ensembles of states that can be remotely prepared by using minimum classical bits from Alice to Bob and their previously shared entangled state and prove that we have found all the ensembles in two-dimensional case. Furthermore we show that any pure quantum state can be remotely and faithfully prepared by using finite classical bits from Alice to Bob and their previously shared nonmaximally entangled state though no faithful quantum teleportation protocols can be achieved by using a nonmaximally entangled state.Comment: 6 page

    Research on parameters optimization of bilateral ring gear blank-holder in thick-plate fine blanking

    To compensate for the poor quality of thick-plate blanking parts in cross-section, this paper suggests using the optimizing bilateral ring gear holder parameters to increase burnish zone and improve cutting precision. With the bilateral gear ring, the hydrostatic pressure of shear deformation zone will increase, plasticity of the material will be lifted to maximum and quality of the cross section will be raised. This paper establishes 8mm AISI-1020 fine blanking model by DEFORM2D, analysis different ring gear parameters and clearance that are influenced the stress-strain and cross section quality to predict forming defects. By using the bilateral gear ring blank holder, the poor quality of thick-plate blanking section is successfully enhanced. Therefore, the bilateral gear ring blank holder is vital to improve the quality of blanking parts and provide the reliable theory basis for the practical engineering application
