Aspect and assertion in Mandarin Chinese

    Get PDF
Chinese has a number of particles such as le, guo, zai and zhe that add a particular aspectual value to the verb to which they are attached. There have been many characterisations of this value in the literature. In this paper, we review several existing influential accounts of these particles, including those in Li and Thompson (1981), Smith (1991), and Mangione and Li (1993). We argue that all these characterisations are intuitively plausible, but none of them is precise. We propose that these particles serve to mark which part of the sentence''s descriptive content is asserted, and that their aspectual value is a consequence of this function. We provide a simple and precise definition of the meanings of le, guo, zai and zhe in terms of the relationship between topic time and time of situation, and show the consequences of their interaction with different verb expressions within thisnew framework of interpretation

McCarthy\u27s The Road and Ethical Choice in a Post-Apocalyptic World

In her article McCarthy\u27s The Road and Ethical Choice in a Post-Apocalyptic World Jingjing Guo analyses ethical choice and its implications in McCarthy\u27s The Road. After examining the deterioration of the ethical context and the prevalence of evil reflected in cannibalism, Guo highlights the father\u27s ethical choice and dilemma. Different from most others, the father chooses to keep alive to protect his son, and to stay man and stay good in a physically devastated and morally bankrupted world. Through discussing the meaning of the metaphor fire and carrying the fire, Guo further explores the significance of the father\u27s choice in passing the fire of human race to a new world

Fast H.264 intra prediction for network video processing

This letter proposes a fast parallel and deeply pipelined architecture for realtime H. 264 intra 4x4 prediction capable of handling up to 32 High Definition video streams (1920x1080 @ 30 fps) simultaneously, while offering high flexibility and consuming only a fraction of resources available on modern FPGA's. The design has been validated on target using a state of the art Altera Stratix IV FPGA

Calibration of a wide angle stereoscopic system

The paper can be found at the following URL on the OSA website: http://dx.doi.org/10.1364/OL.36.003064. Systematic or multiple reproduction or distribution to multiple locations via electronic or other means is prohibited and is subject to penalties under law.Inaccuracies in the calibration of a stereoscopic system appear with errors in point correspondences between both images and inexact points localization in each image. Errors increase if the stereoscopic system is composed of wide angle lens cameras. We propose a technique where detected points in both images are corrected before estimating the fundamental matrix and the lens distortion models. Since points are corrected first, errors in point correspondences and point localization are avoided. To correct point location in both images, geometrical and epipolar constraints are imposed in a nonlinear minimization problem. Geometrical constraints define the point localization in relation to its neighbors in the same image, and eipolar constraints represent the location of one point referred to its corresponding point in the other image. © 2011 Optical Society of America.Ricolfe Viala, C.; Sánchez Salmerón, AJ.; Martínez Berti, E. H. T. Tsiang: A Critical Overview of His Work in Literary and Social Context

    Get PDF
A Chinese exile in the United States, H. T. Tsiang (1899-1971) wrote several books in English that represent pioneer works in the canon of Asian American literature. Although few know his work today, Tsiang is one of the earliest and most prolific innovators of Asian American literature, anticipating some of the appropriative methods, formal techniques, and critical strategies that have come to characterize the tradition
