This thesis analyzes the interplay between everyday life and theatre, and the transformative potential of theatrical performance. The focal point of the study is an amateur theatre group composed of children and young people in Zeytinburnu, a district in Istanbul largely configured of immigrants. Themes involving ethnicity, family, gender and class inform many of the stories performed on stage as the young members of the group have intimately experienced these issues in their everyday lives. The narratives of the young people in the group highlight the transformative potential of theatre activity. This transformative potential is limited in so far as both the contentious group dynamics and the larger social context affect the agents and the community of theatre activity. The alternative mode and political aspects of theatrical performance are discussed, focusing on how youth in the group experience the process of theatrical performance in relation to everyday life experience. This study aims to point out new discussions concerning the function of theatrical performance and the contact between political and theatrical

Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) is an immune-mediated monophasic inflammatory demyelinating disorder of the central nervous system which poses a diagnostic challenge. We report on six cases of different etiologies that mimicked the clinical and radiologic findings of ADEM. The cases were collected from four different reference hospitals in Turkey. The same radiologist from the Akdeniz University Faculty of Medicine examined the magnetic resonance images of all patients. Three (50%) patients had antecedent infections. Initial symptoms of the patients were as follows: fever in 50%, altered consciousness in 33.3% and convulsions in 16.7% of patients. Neurologic examination showed long tract signs in 83.3%, ataxia in 50% and altered consciousness in 50% of patients. Cerebrospinal fluid examination revealed lymphocytic pleocytosis only in case 6. Four patients received steroid pulse therapy and one of these initially underwent intravenous immunoglobulin therapy. The patients’ definitive diagnoses were as follows: paraspinal neuroblastoma-associated paraneoplastic syndrome; histiocytic sarcoma; mitochondrial myopathy, encephalopathy, lactic acidosis and stroke-like episodes; and cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy in one patient each, while two patients had hemophagocytic syndrome. The present case series demonstrated difficulties in diagnosing ADEM while revealing extremely rare disorders that mimic ADEM radiologically and clinically.

IntroductionMalnutrition is defined as a pathological condition arising from deficient or imbalanced intake of nutritional elements. Factors such as increasing metabolic demands during the disease course in the hospitalized patients and inadequate calorie intake increase the risk of malnutrition. The aim of the present study is to evaluate nutritional status of patients admitted to pediatric intensive care units (PICU) in Turkey, examine the effect of nutrition on the treatment process and draw attention to the need for regulating nutritional support of patients while continuing existing therapies.Material and MethodIn this prospective multicenter study, the data was collected over a period of one month from PICUs participating in the PICU Nutrition Study Group in Turkey. Anthropometric data of the patients, calorie intake, 90-day mortality, need for mechanical ventilation, length of hospital stay and length of stay in intensive care unit were recorded and the relationship between these parameters was examined.ResultsOf the 614 patients included in the study, malnutrition was detected in 45.4% of the patients. Enteral feeding was initiated in 40.6% (n = 249) of the patients at day one upon admission to the intensive care unit. In the first 48 h, 86.82% (n = 533) of the patients achieved the target calorie intake, and 81.65% (n = 307) of the 376 patients remaining in the intensive care unit achieved the target calorie intake at the end of one week. The risk of mortality decreased with increasing upper mid-arm circumference and triceps skin fold thickness Z-score (OR = 0.871/0.894; p = 0.027/0.024). The risk of mortality was 2.723 times higher in patients who did not achieve the target calorie intake at first 48 h (p = 0.006) and the risk was 3.829 times higher in patients who did not achieve the target calorie intake at the end of one week (p = 0.001). The risk of mortality decreased with increasing triceps skin fold thickness Z-score (OR = 0.894; p = 0.024).ConclusionTimely and appropriate nutritional support in critically ill patients favorably affects the clinical course. The results of the present study suggest that mortality rate is higher in patients who fail to achieve the target calorie intake at first 48 h and day seven of admission to the intensive care unit. The risk of mortality decreases with increasing triceps skin fold thickness Z-score

Selection of spectral features for land cover type classification

    No full text
Sophisticated sensors of satellites help researchers collect detailed maps of land surface in various image wavebands. These wavebands are processed to form spectral features identifying distinct land structures. However, depending on the structures subject to the research topic, only a portion of collected features might be sufficient for identification. Aim of this study is to present a scheme to pick most valuable spectral features derived from ASTER imagery in order to distinguish four types of tree ensembles: 'Sugi' (Japanese Cedar), 'Hinoki' (Japanese Cypress), 'Mixed deciduous', and 'Others'. Forward selection, a type of wrapper techniques, was employed with four types of classifiers in several train/test splits. Final rank of each feature was determined by Condorcet ranking after application of each classifier. Results showed that among four classifiers, artificial neural networks helped the selection process choose the most valuable features and a high accuracy value of 90.42% (with a true skill statistics score of 91.26%) was obtained using only top-ten features. For feature sets in smaller sizes, support vector machines classifier also performed well and provided an accuracy of 80.33% (with a true skill statistics score of 81.84%) using only top-three features. With help of these findings, landscape data can be represented in smaller forms with spectral features having most discriminative power. This will help reduce processing time and storage needs of expert systems. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

WOS: 000431327000067Classification and addressing, and geographical origin of different olive oils is of great importance due to their differentiation in quality, and for commercial concerns. In this study, quantification of sterols, fatty acids, and triacylglycerol composition of forty-nine olive oils collected from six different locations of western part of Turkey (Izmir, Manisa, Aydm, Mugla, Bursa, and Edremit Bay) were performed by using chromatographic methods. Data for those olive oil samples were compiled, and classified with the artificial neural network (ANN) modelling and principal components analysis (PCA). The analytical results included resourceful information about determining geographical origin and traceability of olive oil in Turkey by using ANN and PCA. The ANN model for sterol composition showed the highest accuracy with 85.71%. The FAME and TAG profiles followed this with 83.67 and 81.63% accuracy respectively. However, Izmir and Manisa regions have poor sensitivity values with all ANN models since they are geographically very close to each other. Furthermore, the PCA results of the sterol composition have provided separation and clustering between locations. beta-sitosterol, campesterol, stigmasterol and 24-metilen cholesterol have an important role in determining the separation of the locations of origin. While separation of the Bursa location has been under the pressure of FAME composition, the TAGs have been effective on the clustering of the Aydm and Edremit Bay. In conclusion, the geographical authentication of Turkish olive oils can be done with high accuracy by using ANN and PCA.EGE University Drug Research and Pharmacokinetic Development and Applied Center, ARGEFAR; Ege University Research FundEge University [14-MUH-063 BAP]This work was supported by EGE University Drug Research and Pharmacokinetic Development and Applied Center, ARGEFAR. WOS: 000471333300009PubMed: 30954798In this study, a novel method based on the determination of 1-naphthalene acetic acid with the usage of magnetite-molecularly imprinted polymer prior to fluorimetric detection has been developed. Magnetite-molecularly imprinted polymer has been used for the first time as selective adsorbent for the determination of 1-naphthalene acetic acid. the adsorption capacity of the synthesized polymer was found to be 2.18 +/- 0.36 mg g(-1) (n = 3). Limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) of the method were found to be 0.75 and 2.50 mu g L-1, respectively. Linearity of the calibration graph for the proposed method was observed within the range of 20-700 mu g L-1. the proposed method seems to be rapid where the detection procedure for 1-naphthalene acetic acid can be completed within a total time of 1 h. the same imprinted polymer can be used for the determination of 1-naphthalene acetic acid with quantitative sorption and recovery values repeatedly for at least ten times. the effects of some potential organic interferences were investigated. Proposed method has been successfully applied to determine 1-naphthalene acetic acid in cucumber, where the recoveries of the spiked samples were found to be in the range of 93.7-104.5%. Characterization of the synthesized polymer was also evaluated. By combining the high capacity, cheapness, reusability and selectivity of the magnetic adsorbent with the dynamic calibration range, rapidity, simplicity, and sensitivity of fluorimetry, the proposed method seems to be an ideal method for the determination of trace levels of 1-naphthalene acetic acid.
