    Quantum Otto cycle with inner friction: finite-time and disorder effects

    The concept of inner friction, by which a quantum heat engine is unable to follow adiabatically its strokes and thus dissipates useful energy, is illustrated in an exact physical model where the working substance consists of an ensemble of misaligned spins interacting with a magnetic field and performing the Otto cycle. The effect of this static disorder under a finite-time cycle gives a new perspective of the concept of inner friction under realistic settings. We investigate the efficiency and power of this engine and relate its performance to the amount of friction from misalignment and to the temperature difference between heat baths. Finally we propose an alternative experimental implementation of the cycle where the spin is encoded in the degree of polarization of photons.Comment: Published version in the Focus Issue on "Quantum Thermodynamics

    Il lavoro su cui qui si riferisce ha tratto spunto dall’iniziativa – supportata da Inail Piemonte – del concorso “meno carta più sicurezza”, un concorso nato per valorizzare le buone prassi vantaggiose anche in termini di gestione economica dei rischi ed estendibilità a situazioni assimilabili. Sin dalle prime fasi di attività della giuria, ci si è resi conto della mancanza di metodiche formalizzate di valutazione, essendo la maggior parte dei criteri adottati a livello nazionale ed europeo, basati su un approccio qualitativo, non esente da valutazioni soggettive. Inail Piemonte e Politecnico di Torino hanno, quindi, ritenuto utile impostare un metodo formalizzato per: a) individuare un criterio di organizzazione dei dati di ingresso, b) identificare nei progetti parametri valutabili, oggettivi e numericamente quantificabili, c) sviluppare un algoritmo di elaborazione dei valori di detti parametri, per una valutazione motivata delle proposte. Detto metodo è stato testato su una serie di casi reali tratti dal citato concorso e sviluppato in forma di tecnica computer assistita

    A Disease-Based Approach to the Vertical and Horizontal Integration of a Medical Curriculum

    As medical disciplines have become increasingly interdisciplinary and evidenced-based medicine is widely practiced, there is a need for curricula that reflect these changes. The newly revised LCME standards 1.1 Strategic Planning and Continuous Quality Improvement and 8.3 Curricular Design, Review, Revision/Content Monitoring require ongoing curricular review to assure accreditation compliancy. We have completed a comprehensive review of our curriculum and have moved from a discipline-based curriculum to that of one that focuses on a systems/disease-based model. The approach allows for a more horizontally integrated curriculum in the preclinical years, while the use of 115 distinct disease and eight themes creates a quality assurance mechanism that allows for tracking of vertical integration across the entire curriculum. The first step in the development of this quality assurance model was to establish and empower a newly formed integration subcommittee. This subcommittee was tasked with developing a model to review, track and improve the horizontal and vertical integration of the curriculum. Our integrated curriculum is now in its second year having completed the initial identification of gaps and redundancies through a process that relies on the mapping of diseases and themes throughout the courses. This ongoing review and evaluation process has created a dynamic quality assurance process that allows our faculty to address issues of both horizontal and vertical integration of our curriculum at the course level

    Histological and mutational profile of diffuse gastric cancer: current knowledge and future challenges

    Gastric cancer (GC) pathogenesis is complex and heterogeneous, reflecting morphological, molecular and genetic diversity. Diffuse gastric cancer (DGC) and intestinal gastric cancer (IGC) are the major histological types. GC may be sporadic or hereditary; sporadic GC is related to environmental and genetic low-risk factors and hereditary GC is caused by inherited high-risk mutations, so far identified only for the diffuse histotype. DGC phenotypic heterogeneity challenges the current understanding of molecular mechanisms underlying carcinogenesis. The definition of a DGC-specific mutational profile remains controversial, possibly reflecting the heterogeneity of DGC-related histological subtypes [signet-ring cell carcinoma (SRCC) and poorly cohesive carcinoma not otherwise specified (PCC-NOS)]. Indeed, DGC and DGC-related subtypes may present specific mutational profiles underlying the particularly aggressive behaviour and dismal prognosis of DGC vs IGC and PCC-NOS vs SRCC. In this systematic review, we revised the histological presentations, molecular classifications and approved therapies for gastric cancer, with a focus on DGC. We then analysed results from the most relevant studies, reporting mutational analysis data specifying mutational frequencies, and their relationship with DGC and IGC histological types, and with specific DGC subtypes (SRCC and PCC-NOS). We aimed at identifying histology-associated mutational profiles with an emphasis in DGC and its subtypes (DGC vs IGC; sporadic vs hereditary DGC; and SRCC vs PCC-NOS). We further used these mutational profiles to identify the most commonly affected molecular pathways and biological functions, and explored the clinical trials directed specifically to patients with DGC.     The psychological impact of COVID-19 on people suffering from dysfunctional eating behaviours: A linguistic analysis of the contents shared in an online community during the lockdown

    The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) spread several months ago from China and it is now a global pandemic. The experience of lockdown has been an undesirable condition for people with mental health problems, including eating disorders. The present study has the aim of understanding the impact of the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic on people with selfreported disordered eating behaviours. A linguistic analysis was carried out with regard to the online posts and comments published by 1971 individuals (86% women) in a Facebook online community focusing on EDs during the lockdown. A total of 244 posts and 3603 comments were collected during the 56 days of lockdown (from the 10th of March until the 4th of May 2020) in Italy and were analysed by Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) software. The results showed that words related to peer support decreased in posts over time, and that anxiety and anger increased in the published comments. Moreover, greater feelings of negativity and anxiety were found in posts and comments throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as lesser use of words related to positive emotions. Thematic qualitative analysis revealed eight themes that described the main subjective components of ED symptomatology and distress during the first COVID-19 lockdown. The current findings can help in delivering tailored treatments to people with eating disorders during the COVID-19 pandemic

    Avaliação do efeito do fipronil sobre a germinação, número de perfilhos e produção de massa seca de Paspalum regnellii.

    A pesquisa foi desenvolvida na EMBRAPA Pecuária Sudeste, São Carlos, SP, com o objetivo de avaliar os efeitos do tratamento de sementes de Paspalum Regnellii com o inseticida Fipronil 250g/L (Standak), sobre a germinação, número de perfilhos e massa seca. As dosagens aplicadas foram 0, 10, 20, 40, 80 mL p.c./ha. O delineamento utilizado foi de blocos completos ao acaso, com quatro repetições. As sementes foram semeadas em canteiros de 1,5m x 1,5 m, com espaçamento de 15 cm entre linhas. A germinação foi afetada positivamente por todas as doses de fipronil. O número de perfilhos foi afetado pelas doses, sendo as doses de 10 e 20 mL, as que apresentaram melhores resultados. As doses não afetaram a produção de massa seca. A dosagem de 10 mL apresentou melhores resultados que as doses recomendadas pelo fabricante
