    Genetic control of traits related to phosphorus use efficiency in tropical maize.

    Knowing the inheritance of traits is essential to establish selection strategies in breeding programs. The aim of this study was to determine the genetic control of traits related to the phosphorus use efficiency in maize. A total of 280 progenies were developed according to design III, which were evaluated in the field under high and low phosphorus (P) availability. The genetic variance components were estimated for the agronomic traits and indices that define P use efficiency. The results indicated that the additive and dominance effects were important in explaining the genetic variability for the flowering time, grain yield and P efficiency indices. However, dominance effects prevailed, indicating that breeding efforts should be made to develop hybrids exploiting the heterosis for traits related to P use efficiency

    Newborn skin reflection: Proof of concept for a new approach for predicting gestational age at birth. A cross-sectional study

    Current methods to assess the gestational age during prenatal care or at birth are a global challenge. Disadvantages, such as low accessibility, high costs, and imprecision of clinical tests and ultrasonography measurements, may compromise health decisions at birth, based on the gestational age. Newborns organs and tissues can indirectly indicate their physical maturity, and we hypothesized that evolutionary changes in their skin, detected using an optoelectronic device meter, may aid in estimating the gestational age. This study analyzed the feasibility of using newborn skin reflectance to estimate the gestational age at birth noninvasively. A cross-sectional study evaluated the skin reflectance of selected infants, preferably premature, at birth. The first-trimester ultrasound was the reference for gestational age. A prototype of a new noninvasive optoelectronic device measured the backscattering of light from the skin, using a light emitting diode at wavelengths of 470 nm, 575 nm, and 630 nm. Univariate and multivariate regression analysis models were employed to predict gestational age, combining skin reflectance with clinical variables for gestational age estimation. The gestational age at birth of 115 newborns from 24.1 to 41.8 weeks of gestation correlated with the light at 630 nm wavelength reflectance 3.3 mm/6.5 mm ratio distant of the sensor, at the forearm and sole . The best-combined variables to predict the gold standard gestational age at birth was the skin reflectance at wavelengths of 630 nm and 470 nm in combination with birth weight, phototherapy, and adjusted to include incubator stay, and sex. The main limitation of the study is that it was very specific to the premature population we studied and needs to be studied in a broader spectrum of newborns

These graphic design pieces were meant to disseminate information about the disease caused by the new Corona Virus SARS-CoV-2 to inform people on how to better protect themselves. Information Design uses guidelines and principles that would inform the design of useful graphic pieces to combat the pandemic and help the people to address their health needs for citizenship rights. This research analyzed multiple pieces made available by Fiocruz (a Brazilian health institution). The case study presented in this paper explores the piece with information explaining how soap acts on the virus and proposes a new design to improve its quality

    Experimental and Numerical Investigation of Post-Flutter Limit Cycle Oscillations on a Cantilevered Flat Plate

    Futuristic aircraft designs and novel aircraft such as High Altitude Long Endurance (HALE) involve a higher level of structural flexibility than in conventional aircraft. Even at present, the trends in the aviation industry are to increase wing length (to reduce induced drag) and maxi- mize use of composites, which lead to increased structural flexibility. This necessitates a rethink of conventional (linear) aeroelastic analysis, since the increased flexibility results in coupling between the flight dynamic and aeroelastic dynamics, and consequently, limit-cycle oscillations of the structure. In this paper, a new three-dimensional low-order model for unsteady aerody- namics that accounts for large oscillation amplitudes and nonplanar wakes is developed. An experiment with a cantilevered flat plate at low Reynolds number is set up and used to validate the low-order model, as well as to study post-flutter limit-cycle oscillations. Results from the low-order model are promising, but show that aerodynamic nonlinearities such as flow sepa- ration and leading-edge vortex shedding must also be modeled in order to predict all possible limit-cycle oscillations of the aeroelastic system
