The improvement of graphical methods in psychological research can promote their use and a better comprehension of their expressive power. The application of hierarchical Bayesian graphical models has recently become more frequent in psychological research. The aim of this contribution is to introduce suggestions for the improvement of hierarchical Bayesian graphical models in psychology. This novel set of suggestions stems from the description and comparison between two main approaches concerned with the use of plate notation and distribution pictograms. It is concluded that the combination of relevant aspects of both models might improve the use of powerful hierarchical Bayesian graphical models in psychology.Fil: Campitelli, Guillermo Jorge. The abstraction effect on logic rules application

    Get PDF
The aim of this study is to analyze the relationship between training on abstraction and the comprehension of logic rules. In order to evaluate the possibility of improvement on logic performance we have selected the particular case of the DeMorgan’s laws. The dispute between the natural logic approach and the mental models theory is analyzed from the perspective of such abstraction effect. Two experiments are reported. The first one suggests that the presentation of a formal proof promotes a better comprehension of DeMorgan´s laws than the use of visual resources or colloquial examples. The second one offers a stronger test for the same abstraction effect. Some limitations concerned with the syntactic meaning of negation and the differences between constructive and evaluative conditions are discussed. Since the meaning of abstraction for the psychology of reasoning is pointed out as critical some suggestions for further research and possible educational applications are mentioned.Fil: Macbeth, Guillermo Eduardo. Exact partition function in U(2)×U(2)U(2)\times U(2) ABJM theory deformed by mass and Fayet-Iliopoulos terms

    Get PDF
We exactly compute the partition function for U(2)k×U(2)−kU(2)_k\times U(2)_{-k} ABJM theory on S3\mathbb S^3 deformed by mass mm and Fayet-Iliopoulos parameter ζ\zeta . For k=1,2k=1,2, the partition function has an infinite number of Lee-Yang zeros. For general kk, in the decompactification limit the theory exhibits a quantum (first-order) phase transition at m=2ζm=2\zeta .Comment: 11 pages, 1 figure. v2: references adde

Pheromone-based In-Network Processing for wireless sensor network monitoring systems

    Get PDF
Monitoring spatio-temporal continuous fields using wireless sensor networks (WSNs) has emerged as a novel solution. An efficient data-driven routing mechanism for sensor querying and information gathering in large-scale WSNs is a challenging problem. In particular, we consider the case of how to query the sensor network information with the minimum energy cost in scenarios where a small subset of sensor nodes has relevant readings. In order to deal with this problem, we propose a Pheromone-based In-Network Processing (PhINP) mechanism. The proposal takes advantages of both a pheromone-based iterative strategy to direct queries towards nodes with relevant information and query- and response-based in-network filtering to reduce the number of active nodes. Additionally, we apply reinforcement learning to improve the performance. The main contribution of this work is the proposal of a simple and efficient mechanism for information discovery and gathering. It can reduce the messages exchanged in the network, by allowing some error, in order to maximize the network lifetime. We demonstrate by extensive simulations that using PhINP mechanism the query dissemination cost can be reduced by approximately 60% over flooding, with an error below 1%, applying the same in-network filtering strategy.Fil: Riva, Guillermo Gaston. Supersymmetric U(N)U(N) Chern-Simons-matter theory and phase transitions

    Get PDF
We study N=2{\mathcal{N}}=2 supersymmetric U(N)U(N) Chern-Simons with NfN_{f} fundamental and NfN_{f} antifundamental chiral multiplets of mass mm in the complete parameter space spanned by (g, m, N, Nf)(g,\,m,\,N,\,N_{f}), where gg denotes the coupling constant. In particular, we analyze the matrix model description of its partition function, both at finite NN using the method of orthogonal polynomials together with Mordell integrals and, at large NN with fixed gg, using the theory of Toeplitz determinants. We show for the massless case that there is an explicit realization of the Giveon-Kutasov duality. For finite NN, with N>NfN>N_{f}, three regimes that exactly correspond to the known three large NN phases of theory are identified and characterized.Comment: 28 pages, v3: Minor modification to match published versio

A Model for Induction Motors with Non-Uniform Air-Gap

    Get PDF
Equations to calculate inductances of induction motors, considering non-uniform air-gap, are proposed. The analyzed air-gap variations are static and dynamic eccentricity and stator slots. The equations for inductance calculation, obtained from the modified winding functions and the energy stored in the air-gap, allow considering the effect of rotor bar skewing. Experimental results that validate the proposed method are presented.Fil: Bossio, Guillermo Rubén. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas; Argentina. Internal efficiency of nutrient utilization: what is it and how to measure it during vegetative plant growth?

    Get PDF
Efficient use of the resources required by plants to sustain crop production is considered an important objective in agriculture. In this context, the idea of developing crops with an enhanced ability to utilize mineral nutrients already taken up by roots has been proposed. In recent years powerful tools that allow the association of phenotypic variation with high-resolution genetic maps of crop plants have also emerged. To take advantage of these tools, accurate methods are needed to estimate the internal efficiency of nutrient utilization (ENU) at the whole-plant level, which requires using suitable conceptual and experimental approaches. Here we highlight some inconsistencies in the definitions of ENU commonly used for ENU ‘phenotyping’ at the vegetative stage and suggest that it would be convenient to adopt a dynamic definition. The idea that ENU should provide information about the relationship between carbon and mineral nutrient economies mainly during the period under which growth is actually affected by low internal nutrient concentration is here advocated as a guide for the selection of adequate operational ENU formulae for the vegetative stage. The desirability of using experimental approaches that allow removal of the influence of nutrient acquisition efficiency on ENU estimations is highlighted. It is proposed that the use of simulation models could help refine the conclusions obtained through these experimental procedures. Some potential limitations in breeding for high ENU are also considered.Fil: Santa Maria, Guillermo Esteban. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. Phase transitions and symmetry energy in nuclear pasta

    Get PDF
Cold and isospin-symmetric nuclear matter at sub-saturation densities is known to form the so-called pasta structures, which, in turn, are known to undergo peculiar phase transitions. Here we investigate if such pastas and their phase changes survive in isospin asymmetric nuclear matter, and whether the symmetry energy of such pasta configurations is connected to the isospin content, the morphology of the pasta and to the phase transitions. We find that indeed pastas are formed in isospin asymmetric systems with proton to neutron ratios of x = 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5, densities in the range of 0.05 fm−3 the morphology of the nuclear matter structure.Fil: Dorso, Claudio Oscar. Associations of maternal and adolescent religiosity and spirituality with adolescent alcohol use in Chile: implications for social work practice

To inform social work practice with adolescents who may consume alcohol, we examined if alcohol use among Chilean adolescents varied as a function of their mothers’ and their own religiosity and spirituality. Data were from 787 Chilean adolescents and their mothers. Adolescent spirituality was a protective factor against more deleterious alcohol use. Parental monitoring and alcohol using opportunities mediated the associations. The practice of religious behaviors by themselves without meaningful faith were not associated with alcohol use among adolescents. Implications for social work practice are discussed. This research was funded by the US National Institute on Drug Abuse (R01 02118).
