The inf-sup condition and error estimates for the Arnold-Falk plate bending element
We prove a discrete inf-sup condition for a mixed plate element introduced by Arnold and Falk. By using this condition, we obtain optimal error estimates for the shear strain which are valid uniformly in the plate thickness.Facultad de Ciencias Exacta
Superconvergence for rectangular mixed finite elements
In this paper we prove superconvergence error estimates for the vector variable for mixed finite element approximations of second order elliptic problems. For the rectangular finite elements of Raviart and Thomas and for those of Brezzi et al. we prove that the distance in L 2 between the approximate solution and a projection of the exact one is of higher order than the error itself. This result is exploited to obtain superconvergence at Gaussian points and to construct higher order approximations by a local postprocessing.Departamento de Matemátic
Call of the nature
This paper aims to elaborate upon Pope Benedict’s speech to the Bundestag in September 2011,
just as he Himself suggests doing. The core of the discourse is the foundation of Law or the
fundamental issue of its philosophy: Justice (which is the response from iusnaturalism to the
question about such principle). With Kelsen, what is and what ought to be were set apart and
that had an adverse effect on their essence. On the contrary, Benedict XVI wants to return to the
ancient and perennial notion of justice, the foundation of Law that understood the just thing
as a trinomial composed of nature (what is), reason (what ought to be), and Spiritus Creator
(support of reason and nature) and made justice more comprehensible. This is the starting
point from which this paper intends to comment on in order to facilitate the understanding of
Benedict XVI’s ideas, basing His thoughts on the book by Leonardo Boff La opción tierra (Earth
option). From our point of view this book approximates what is to what ought to be and from
Boff’s ecologist view poses some questions in the human level, particularly in the field of Law
On the asymptotic exactness of Bank-Weiser's estimator
In this paper we analyze an error estimator introduced by Bank and Weiser. We prove that this estimator is asymptotically exact in the energy norm for regular solutions and parallel meshes. By considering a simple example we show that this is not true for general meshes.Departamento de Matemátic
Nanobiotechnology solutions against aedes aegypti
United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF)/United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)/World Bank/World Health Organization (WHO) implemented the Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR) program with excellent results; however, due to current challenges, this active program requires new and innovative solutions. Nowadays, Aedes aegyptis-borne diseases can be added among neglected diseases. Surveillance and control must be considered owing to a great risk of infection with dengue, chikungunya and zika viruses. Although investigations on several vaccines are in progress, new insights in term of development of drugs that evade from resistance are of paramount importance. Nanobiotechnology appears as one of the most innovative strategy in the search of new uses for old pharmaceuticals or in the development of innovative and intelligent nanomedicines for neglected diseases. Liposomes, solid lipid nanoparticles, nanoemulsions, polymeric nanoparticles, metallic nanoparticles, quantum dots, carbon dots and carbon nanotubes were the focus of the current advances. Weighted a priori estimates for elliptic equations
We give a simpler proof of the a priori estimates obtained by Durán et al. (2008, 2010) for solutions of elliptic problems in weighted Sobolev norms when the weights belong to the Muckenhoupt class Ap. The argument is a generalization to bounded domains of the one used in Rn to prove the continuity of singular integral operators in weighted norms. In the case of singular integral operators it is known that the Ap condition is also necessary for the continuity. We do not know whether this is also true for the a priori estimates in bounded domains but we are able to prove a weaker result when the operator is the Laplacian or a power of it. We prove that a necessary condition is that the weight belongs to the local Ap class.Facultad de Ciencias Exacta
An explicit right inverse of the divergence operator which is continuous in weighted norms
The existence of a continuous right inverse of the divergence operator in W1,p0 (Ω)n, 1 n a bounded domain which is star-shaped with respect to a ball B ⊂ Ω. The continuity results are obtained by using an explicit solution of the divergence equation and the classical theory of singular integrals of Calderón and Zygmund together with general results on weighted estimates proven by Stein. The weights considered here are of interest in the analysis of finite element methods. In particular, our result allows us to extend to the three-dimensional case the general results on uniform convergence of finite element approximations of the Stokes equations.Facultad de Ciencias Exacta
