    Modal analysis of the input impedance of wind instruments. Application to the sound synthesis of a clarinet

    International audienceThis paper investigates the modal analysis of wind instruments as seen from the input of their air column. Beside the treatment of analytical models, a particular emphasis is given to the analysis of measured input impedances. This requires special care because the measurements cover only a limited frequency band and are affected by some unknown errors. This paper describes how the Prony analysis and the Least Squares Complex Exponential (LSCE) classical techniques can be used in this context and how the main pitfalls can be avoided in their application. A physically acceptable method of reconstruction of the low frequency band is proposed. A technique using fictitious points in the high frequency range is described in order to ensure the passivity of the resonator in the whole frequency band. The principles of a real-time synthesis of clarinet sounds based on the modal representation of the resonator is given as an application, with a method to efficiently handle the modal representation during the transition between fingerings

    Measurement of Gross cell-surface antigen and p30 level in murine retrovirus-infected cell lines.

    The level of Gross cell-surface antigen (GCSAa) expression at the surface of murine retrovirus-infected fibroblasts was determined by quantitative absorption of the anti-GCSAa activity of a serum produced in syngeneic W/Fu rats immunized against (C58NT)D lymphoma, and tested in a cytotoxicity assay against E male G2 lymphoma cells. While GCSAa was specifically expressed on Gross-type virus (G-MuLV)-induced lymphoma cells, and while G-MuLV and G-related MuLV induced a high level of GCSAa expression on murine fibroblasts, the Friend-Moloney-Rauscher (FMR) group viruses (FMR MuLV) and xenotropic isolates were also able to induce a high or intermediate level of GCSAa. Since GCSAa has been shown to be borne by glycosylated precursors of the viral nucleocapside (gp95gag and gp85gag), the amount of GCSAa expressed on these cells was compared to the level of cytoplasmic p30. In G- and G-related MuLV-infected cell lines, a significant relationship was found between the amount of GCSAa and the level of p30, whereas in FMR-MuLV or xenotropic virus-infected cells the amount of GCSAa varied independently of the p30 level. These results could explain the discrepancy in the specificity of expression of GCSAa in vivo and in vitro

    Approximation of the acoustic radiation impedance of a cylindrical pipe

    Useful approximation formulae for radiation impedance are given for the reflection coefficients of both infinitely flanged and unflanged rigid-walled cylindrical ducts. The expressions guarantee that simple but necessary physical and mathematical principles are met, like hermitian symmetry for the reflection coefficient (identical behaviour of positive and negative frequencies) and causality for the impulse response. A non causal but more accurate expression is also proposed that is suitable for frequency-domain applications. The formulae are obtained by analytical and numerical fitting to reference results from Levine & Schwinger for the unflanged case and extracted from the radiation impedance matrix given by Zorumski for the infinite flanged case.Comment: Journal of Sound and Vibration (2008) accepte

    Experimental functional response and inter-individual variation in foraging rate of teal (Anas crecca)

    The functional response, i.e. the change in per capita food intake rate per time unit with changed food availability, is a widely used tool for understanding the ecology and behaviour of animals. However, waterfowl remain poorly explored in this context. In an aviary experiment we derived a functional response curve for teal (Anascrecca) foraging on rice (Oryzasativa) seeds. We found a linear relationship between intake rate and seed density, as expected for a filter-feeder. At high seed densities we found a threshold, above which intake rate still increased linearly but with a lower slope, possibly reflecting a switch from filter-feeding to a scooping foraging mode. The present study shows that food intake rate in teal is linearly related to food availability within the range of naturally occurring seed densities, a finding with major implications for management and conservation of wetland habitats.</p

    Identifying appropriate methodology to diagnose aeration limitations with large peat and bark particles in growing media

    Large-sized particles (coarse peat, bark or sawdust) are often added to growing media to improve substrate aeration properties (gas storage and exchange). Recent studies have shown that large fragments mixed with fines may create barriers that restrict gas diffusion or create competition for oxygen even if they improve air storage. An experiment was carried out to compare the growth performances of growing media containing large fragments and to assess their aeration status using different methods. Different mixes were made of a fine sphagnum peat (average size 2.4 mm) and a coarse (1-2, 2-4, 4-6, 6-10, and 10-20 mm particles) sphagnum peat or bark (2-4 and 10-20 mm). These substrates had different aeration properties and were used to grow Poinsettia and Impatiens ‘New Guinea’ in a greenhouse, resulting in differences in plant growth. The results show that air-filled porosity remained relatively unaffected by fragment size. Gas relative diffusivity differed significantly between treatments and was highest in the mix with the 2-4 mm particles and diminished rapidly as fragment size increased from 4 to 20 mm or decreased to 1-2 mm. Diffusivity was clearly lower in the bark/peat mixes but showed the same trend with coarse fragments. Root and shoot growth parameters were significantly and positively correlated to gas relative diffusivity. Moreover, the growth reduction observed in the bark/peat mixes relative to pure peat was most likely linked to limited gas exchange. Air-filled porosity assessments performed in situ (in the pot itself) or prior to potting, in cylinders, gave inconsistent results or were not significantly correlated to plant growth, indicating that aeration limitations are better diagnosed with gas diffusivity in growing media
